Be Excellent To Each Other

On the Eurogamer site this morning and I noticed a banner ad at the top of the page, which is very unusual given that I have adblock installed. At the top right of the banner was the word Advertisement with a [?] next to it so I clicked it out of curiosity and got this page. This seems like a pretty good idea as a compromise and as long as the ads remain relatively unobtrusive I'm all for it. I've been feeling a bit morally iffy about adblock for a while now given that I basically consume a lot of content for nothing by blocking the ads; but even five minutes spent on the internet without it has me rushing to reactivate it because Jesus fucking Christ advertisers are assholes. So, yeah; I like the idea that someone has actually sat down and negotiated an idea like this and I hope it comes off for everyone's sake. Thoughts?

I like that a lot. I have no issue with ad revenue for websites, and it's a nice way to enforce a sort of advertising code of conduct.

I come to the internet to read stuff, not to be bombarded by adverts but I totally see the need to raise revenue with them. I think this is a good idea overall.

I too tried uninstalling adblock for a bit and good grief, what a mess the internet is! YouTube was horrible.

I don't mind other people deciding to let websites run ads on their computer, but I have no intention of letting ads run on my computer.

I also don't put adverts on my website, even though I'd probably earn a decent amount from them, because I block ads on everyone else's website, and I don't want to be a hypocrite.

Conversely I run ads on my sites, and have never used an Adblocker. You mentally screen out pretty much every advert anyway, and it really really helps the owners of such sites. Unless they've turned the site into an intolerable advert spamfest, which is just a terrible UI decision on their part and deserves to suffer as a result.

I dunno, I find actually screening them out more effective than just doing it mentally.

I see adverts as the cost of reading something witty and informative. As such, I have no fear BeeX ever needing them.

Maybe I should put some ads on Beex, for un-logged-in people (or people that switch them on, I guess). I don't have the first clue how to, though.

Even as a logged in member I've no issue with ads that aren't horrible. Aside from any voluntary donations I'm always mindful that Beex is free for us all so if it would help at all financially I'd say go for it.
