A clever idea, but I honestly don't think I'd pay even a tenth of what they're asking. Just seems a bit....pointless.

Near-IR spectrometer, probably. With a database of fingerprints for common beverage types. I wonder if it's really as accurate as it says.

Interesting. I could see how that works for prepackaged mass produced drinks, but i'm not sure how accurate it would be when it comes to things like an on-the-spot made drink from Starbucks etc... They seem to be pretty confident though!

It's £70 + import duty to get one sent to the UK and it isn't out till 2015.
If it was out now I expect I would order one, but that is a long pre-order wait!

Quote:
Chemical microanalysis with cavity-enhanced optical waveguide devices

Micro optical spectroscopy and some rudimentary data analysis. I am not sure if they actually use adsorption at all, or if they only use spectroscopy. I am willing to bet it is completely non-contact (pure spectroscopy).

They store numerical 'signatures' of popular drinks in an online database, and the recorded/digitized spectroscopic signature from the Vessyl is matched using the app. No magic there.

My guess is the non-contact approach will make Vessyl's in-field performance extremely iffy. It will take about three or fewer mismatched fluid component readouts (colloidal suspensions with inhomogeneous dispersion, anyone?) for users to ditch the product.

Also see: Vessyl: How does Vessyl determine the number of calories in a beverage?

It's safe to chalk up another lousy tech product 'designed' by Yves Behar. Please don't waste your money on non-critical first-world issues, feed a homeless person instead or donate to your fave charity/crowdsource fund.

My main problem with it though, is that it doesn't fit with my "must use every cup, plate and utensil before I can be arsed to think about putting stuff in the dishwasher, let alone wash by hand" lifestyle.

That's a bigger problem for you than the idea that the $99 smart cup might not work properly?

As a manufacturer of chemical detection systems, I doubt the usefulness and ability of this product.

Does it think you've enjoyed a drink of soapy water every time you wash it?

No. It can tell the difference.

Is my Vessyl water-resistant?
Yes. Your Vessyl is water resistant, which means it’s safe under normal use and washing.

I note that it's not water proof, then. It's a cup. That isn't water proof.

How do you clean my Vessyl? Is it dishwasher safe?
We recommend that you do NOT place your Vessyl in the dishwasher. Your Vessyl’s non-stick glass-like material frees you from having to wash your Vessyl frequently – in many cases, a quick rinse is all that’s needed. On the occasions where you would like to wash, it’s quite easy. A little soap and water with a non-abrasive sponge or cloth should do the trick.
Fortunately, right now, I drink most of my drinks out of the most glass-like material you can imagine...

Shit advert by the way. Just horrible.

It made me realise that I'm not it's target audience though. I certainly can't be arsed to track every substance that goes in my face hole. Quite who the target is I've no idea though. Diabetics? People with too much money? Fitness freaks?

I believe the clue was almost immediately after the woman was drinking wine out of a "glass".

It's being marketed to hipsters, which is totally the wrong market. They need to go after those idiots who buy wearable fitness bands and wifi scales and the like...

"Automatically knows and tracks what your drinking in real time"

What is the benefit in that exactly? No doubt it will sell in bucket loads to people who like to tell Twitter they had a glass of water

Our engineering team works diligently to ensure the best consumer experience is achieved, and one of our top goals is to make the cup thermally efficient for both hot and cold beverages.

Or, "No" but we hope it will be, perhaps we should have fixed that before we got to this point.
