Starts in a couple of hours I think.

Does anyone care anymore? I didn't know it was on until I saw on twitter. Apparently there is a new OSX version, iOS 8, HealthBook app, new Apple TV (maybe), and loads of Beats bullshit.

Urgh; more testing incoming.

I couldn't give less of a shit about the Beats stuff and in general care much more about Apple's hardware announcements than their software so probably little of interest for me.

Continuity is ace, I can see myself using that a fair bit. I already use MightyText for Android, even though it's glitchy as all fuck, so to have that functionality plus more for my work iPhone will be really handy.

I also really like Yosemite's GUI, even though it's not a massive change. I bet it'll look nice on a retina display.

Obviously I'm not a developer, so mostly that stuff went over my head, but there seem to be some very obvious performance advantages for devs using the Swift programming language and Metal.

Hopefully my work will sort me out with the Yosemite beta in the next few days so I can have a play.

So: widgets, third party keyboards and (controlled) data sharing between apps. Some of these have been a long time coming, as always, but fair play to Apple; they're finally knicking more stuff from Android that people have wanted for years. :p

I really am joking there, this is some good shit from Apple and some nice features to add to iOS. I also noticed the stuff about a whole new programming language which seems bonkers to a non-dev; anyone who knows more about such things care to comment for idiots like me?

It replaces most or all of the hideous clunky 70s-ness from Objective-C with clean and modern design. Looks like a real step forward for Apple devs. However, it's even more of a closed, proprietary language. I haven't read enough of the book yet to really compare it to anything. It feels like a scripting language, lightweight typing and full closure support.

So I presume existing apps won't need rewritten in the new language or anything extreme like that? And is it likely that you'd need to be on iOS8 to run anything written in the new language, or can the compiler ensure that the final binary will look the same (and thus be backwards compatible) regardless of the source language used?

No and no. Swift apps run on Mavericks and iOS 7. Indeed, if you download the new Xcode beta, you'll be using Swift on 10.9 today.

Hmmm.

Quote:
Dear God, iTunes. It needs to lose its reliance on software to work, especially software that is so fucking picky about letting you do things ("Want to plug that phone into this computer? Are you mad?").
Done. iTunes is no longer required, and the marginal utility it still offers shrinks with every new iOS release.

Quote:
It needs something like the notification bar Android phones have. Little numbers on the icons are neat, but not all the icons are on the first page.
Done.

Quote:
When you download a new application on Android, you get a quick 'heads-up' page (like this) listing all the things an app can do to your phone. This is A Good Thing.
Well, Android doesn't work that way any more either. Plus Android security permissions these days... how do you feel about it?

Quote:
Put the date on text messages.
Done.

Quote:
Let me remove applications I don't want, stocks, for instance, or email.
Not done. Then again, there's tons of Samsung stuff you can't remove from your Note, right?

Quote:
Let the phone update itself over the air, without needing to be plugged in.
Done.

Quote:
Background applications. Now, I know all the theory about why they can be bad, and I know they slow the phone down, but give me the choice, at least.
Done for a middling value of done.

Quote:
Once you've got background apps, you can have Widgets.
Done.

Quote:
Considering it doesn't run many background applications, sometimes it gets sluggish for no reason I can see. I understand that the 3GS is much improved, however.
Processes can get stuck, same as on any OS. I suspect this is what you were seeing.

Safari isn't that good. Everyone harps on about how it's just as good as browsing on a PC, but these people are either idiots or liars. Yes, most of the things it does wrong are as a result of bad website programming, but if it stopped trying to be a 'real' browser and went back to being a phone one, it wouldn't have as many problems. And it needs Flash.
Flash hahahhahah right. I have no idea what you were even on about here.

Quote:
I miss having a physical keyboard, but I think that's something I'd get used to.
Physical keyboards are deader than A-line flares.

Quote:
The Android unlock feature is neat. It needs something like that.
Fingerprints, baby.

Quote:
Ditch the iPod cable and use a mini-USB instead. I believe this is going to become standard on all phones, though?
Very much not done.

Quote:
Be cheaper. Jesus, but this phone is expensive. My G1 costs me £20 a month for a plan I can't possibly hope to use all of, and it was free. I understand why it should cost more than a normal 'non-smart' phone but it simply isn't worth the money carriers want for it (Tesco are having a good go, though).
Not done.

Larger iPhone confirmed. I am eagerly awaiting the "we have always been at war with Eurasia" moment about screen size fragmentation.

Just what I wrote. Everyone went on about how mobile Safari was as good as browsing on the PC, which was rubbish. At the time, it used to lie and tell servers that it was a computer, and not a phone (it perhaps still does, for all I know), so anything with server-side switching for a mobile version didn't fire.
As for "hahahaha Flash", that's a fine point of view to have if you understand what Flash is, but all the users at the time understood was "Why am I getting a grey box instead of my website?". You can blame the web authors all you like, but at the time that's what the web was. There's still nothing that even comes close to Flash for delivering perfect (until the iPhone came along) cross-browser rich media / interaction stuff.

With pockets in the knees. True, but it's a shame that "pretty" took over from "functional". Better keyboards eased that pain a lot, though. I sometimes wonder if I'd still use them.

Still there, only longer (although that might have as much to do with the obscene resolution change as anything else (edit: oh, you can see the scrollbar):

It does surely? When you tap to install an app either on the Google Play app or on the website you get a pop-up listing the permissions the app needs and forcing you to accept before the download will start. Even if you grab something from third party app store like Amazon you still get the same thing (albeit presented slightly different because it's happening at install time rather than before the download even begins).

ETA: what Grimm said.

Oh, I misunderstood you. I thought you were saying Android did this on first-run of the app, not prior to the install. Yes, in that case, KitKat is the same (with more groups).

Flash was terrible on mobile. You've just finished whining about how desktop layouts didn't work on mobile, and now you're trumpeting the use of Flash to.. deliver edsktop layouts to mobile? Plus it had terrible battery life implications and a hopelessly broken security model. Apple did us all a favour by biting this bullet.

A physical keyboard is a waste of ~30% of your device when you're doing stuff that doesn't use a keyboard, like web browsing or taking pictures. It's just not the right answer for a smartphone.

But they'd work - probably too small, but they'd work. Some "proper" websites simply didn't (and some still don't, but there's not really an excuse for that now).

It was dying out anyway, this just sped it up. Personally I'd have rather had faster phones with better battery life ;)

Oh God, Twitter is saying you'll be able to make phone calls on an iPad.

Please tell me that's not true. It's bad enough with idiots holding them up to take pictures in the second row of a wedding, which possibly happened to me a week ago :(

Not face time audio only, as you can do that on an iPad anyway?

Sort of. When you have your phone within range (which was defined as "in another room" so might mean "on the same wifi network" rather than "bluetooth" [1], then when it rings or receives an SMS, you get notifications on all your devices -- Macs and iPads. You can talk on the call or reply to the SMS from any of the other devices. The iPad doesn't make the call directly. It's just acting as a speakerphone.

So yes, you can take calls on your iPad, as long as it's on the same wifi network as your iPhone, which probably won't be the case when you are not at home.

[1] fake edit -- yeah, wifi: http://www.apple.com/osx/preview/mac-and-ios/

Don't you get "someone else has posted" warnings?

I do, but I've got into the (bad) habit of just ignoring it and hitting submit a second time with barely a thought. Which is usually fine as it's rare you've typed up nearly exactly the same sodding reply as someone else; not so much in this case of course.

While I appreciate that 'the best camera is the one you have on that's with you' holding up a big tablet to take a picture looks really silly and kinda awkward too. Do newer iPads have decent cameras? We've only got an iPad 2 and the camera on that is not very good.

Shall I tell you what I'd like? I'm going to anyway. I want to be able to use my mobile network to download whatever the hell I like without being connected to Wifi.

If I've got all-you-can-eat and want to download an album using my mobile network then I should bloody well be able to. Especially in the age of 4G and sheeeeet.

He's turned off downloading apps using mobile data, obviously.

So he's moaning about something he's switched off himself?

How do you respond to this claim Saturnalian? Are you, in fact, a bit of a tit?

Seems that way. I hope I'm wrong. :)

Well they do still have an upper limit on how big an app you can download over mobile data (50mb, currently? Used to be 10mb) - but I wasn't aware that applied to music at all.

Yes, the fact he specifically mentioned an album made me think the only thing it could be is that mobile data is disabled for downloading music in the settings.

Jesus, really? That's shit, I habitually download much bigger apps than that over mobile data and would be really annoyed if I had to mentally queue loads of stuff up and pull it down only when I got home.

The Amazon Android app store used to have a really low limit as well but they've put an 'unlimited' setting in now. Google Play does have a weird way of implementing this mind; it asks you on a per app basis (if the app's over a certain size) whether you want to download it over 3G or wait for a wifi connection and it'll then remember that choice for that app, but ask you the same question for the next large app.

Well yes to the latter question but, fortunately, on this occasion only, I am not. It's a big album over 50mb. Hey, I fancied listening to one of those fat ass compilation albums and thought, wrongly apparently, I could, but no, I've got to wait till I get home and download it over wifi. I'll have lost interest by then.

That is indeed shite then, I sympathise and agree. It's a weird limit to leave in in this day and age. I don't suppose you can do something stupid like download a few tracks at a time or something to get round it?

I really don't understand the problem. Even if you click on 'download whole album' it's still individual downloads for each songs. I've never had this problem. Unless it's all one track.

I'm not making this up, y'know!

Look, even the 50mb thingy limit on games is garbage anyway in an age of 4G and all-you-can-eat-data. If I want to download something over my mobile network it should sodding well let me!

Apparently the limit was increased to 100MB with iOS7 but yeah, it's still crap not to have it as an over-ride option.
