a 1-2-3 for the Dutch there...

Watched the snowboarding slope style (or whatever it's called) earlier, very tense stuff.

After reading this it makes me laugh, the commentators here are always cheering on sweden in whatever sport they are playing. Really biased towards them. Makes it a bit more interesting that just boring impartial commentary.

I was annoyed by the commentary, but more because it was inane screechy drivel. Also, there's a difference between cheering on the broadcasting nation and cheering at someone else crashing out and celebrating their misfortune.

Watching the figure skating and missing Stephane Lambiel and Brian Joubert. Google them, ladies.

I think they are very talented, but I don't really like the subjective judging aspect of them. Especially something like the mogels and ski jumping.

It should surely just be the fastest or the furtherst?

I mean, what's the motto?

Quote:
Faster, Higher, Stronger

No mention of Twistier, gnarlier, or more upsidedownier!

Don't get me wrong, I loved watching the slope style (not really that into ice dance, or figure skating), but there was a nagging feeling that it was just 6 blokes deciding who was best, and a different set of blokes would have a different answer. Which sits uneasy with me.

Going back to the ski jump, I feel that if an ugly style makes you go further, you shouldn't be punished for it, but it is. Same with the Mogels, you could be super fast, right on the edge, and ungainly, and lose to the slightly slower more elegant looking athlete. I just don't like that.

Imagine if other sports had that, what if the triple jump, had a style element? Or a beautiful free-kick, bending into the top left corner was worth more than a miss-kick that deflects off a defender and dribbles over the line? Or maybe you'd get penalty points for not quite maintaining you arms in the 100m butterfly, or ugly miss-timed shots would only get you half the runs.

Ah, no matter, sorry for derailing the thread. I'm still going to watch it (but not the ice dancing)

Heh, I had this conversation many a time with my mother, so I know exactly where you are coming from and I agree. However there are loads of events that are marked, if you really did just make the Olympics about an objective tasks then you would get rid of loads of "sports".

Right there with you on the musicals. I know most of the words to Andrew Lloyd Webber's back catalogue.

That comes in useful, day to day

Yeah, I've always found the preponderance of 'judged' sports to be a major dampener on the Winter Olympics. On the plus side: no Dressage. Complete lack of the most boring spectator sport on earth. So there is that.

For me it's the film musicals. Seven Brides, Calamity Jane, My Fair Lady, etc...

I always support Finland, since they (fins? finnish?) always participate in sports (ski jumping, ice hockey), we dutch don't, got into this trick at lillehammer'94 when Jari Litmanen played at Ajax..

The commentators here are cheering on the norwegians too. Which is nice. Go scandinavia!

As long as Sweden beat Finland in the hockey if they meet I'll be happy

I have decided that I cannot support team gb as it is rich people indulging a hobby funded by a charitable organisation.
