Not in my understanding - it goes into a separate "tab" if you don't follow that person on G+, but not everyone uses the tabs (I don't), so it will arrive in my inbox.

Ah, OK. Somewhat annoying. I imagine it therefore shows up in your inbox via IMAP also, which is where I get most of my email.

I've switched it off, as I don't want people contacting me by my real gmail address. That's just the current bucket that my domain email is forwarded to, and will likely change every so often.

Until you bang a gmail filter rule on it and move it out of the inbox, which is what I'm planning on doing.

Aye, but if someone sends me a message via that, then that will only go to my gmail account, if I move off gmail in the future, then i'll never look in my gmail account again and never get that message.

To be troubled by this, you don't need to use G+, you just need a G+ account. To have a G+ account, you don't need to use G+; you only need to use Hangouts, or YouTube, or one of the increasing number of other Google products that rely on it.

If this genuinely allows anyone on G+ to contact anyone else, I wonder how it's going to decide which people to 'suggest'? If I was composing an email in Gmail and typed "david" in the To box how does it decide which of the millions of David's on G+ to show me? I realise that's hardly the point here but I'm curious.

More constructively, if they'd made it so that it only ever suggested G+ people that were in your circles (or whatever the G+ version of 'friended' is) it wouldn't be too far from being useful. The ability to for genuinely complete strangers to do it is bollocks though.

G+ photo backup gives you AutoAwesome which is amazeballs.

That's an option you can set, of course, as the OP makes clear. Arguably it should have been the default option.

More details needed. I suspect you can add additional emails to a google+ account, but there will always be a gmail address at the core of it.

I had a youtube account with my email address, it got made into a google account which I used to setup my google+ account. As far as I know I don't have a gmail address.

Can you do a test? Go to mail.google.com and login, then go to settings and choose the accounts tab. What does it show under "Send Mail as:"
