Apart from a brief mention in Bits and Bobs over 12 months ago, we don't seem to have mentioned this. It is, basically, Guitar Hero (just guitar, although bass is supposed to be coming in DLC), but with a real guitar, and in theory, the game can be played by anyone, regardless of whether or not you've actually touched a real guitar or not, as it's supposed to adapt to how well you can play songs, and expects you to get better over a long period, as opposed to throwing one song at you until you can play it perfectly. It also makes you learn the basics through a series of mini games.

The setlist ,as shamelessly copied from wikipedia, has got me interested

As someone that seems to have lost interest in games in general recently, and has never picked up a non-plastic guitar, I'm interested enough in this to throw some money at it (it's not cheap, $80 in the US, because you need an adaptor, and that's assuming you've got access to a guitar), but unfortunately, there's the problem. The game has been out (on PS3 and 360) for about 6 months in North America, but currently the UK release date is sitting at October, nearly a full year after the original release (apparently, there's a band from Southend with the same name, and I heard something about some sort of patent issue, but I don't know which of those, if either, is the cause of the delay). The 360 version isn't region free, but the PS3 one is, although you'll have to use a US account to purchase the DLC.

I guess I'll have to see if the novelty has worn off in six months (assuming it does come out then).

I've noticed one or two copies of this appearing on Ebay as I've been browsing and I hadn't really heard much about this either. It's something I'd probably get though. The main track list doesn't really appeal, but there are some good DLC tracks there at least. I don't have a guitar either though, so it could get rather expensive.

wait... So, what, do you plug in an actual guitar? What, do you mean via electric guitar output to the 360 via some kind of adaptor?

I think I'd prefer to pick up the Rock Band 3 pro guitar, in all honesty.

I don't know, they sound like quite different things. Doesn't the rock band 3 pro guitar have a button for each string on each fret rather than actual strings? I know that's teaching finger placement by way of patterns, but not how the strings actually feel and respond. If this works it could be a more useful teaching tool than game. I guess it depend what you wanted to get out of it.

Also, rock band 3 and the pro guitar would require you buying a pro guitar, whereas you already have a guitar, so the layout would be significantly less.

I already know how to play the guitar, so it's a moot point for me. Plus the RB pro guitar is surprisingly good. I was very sceptical, but was quickly won over when I tried it.

that's what I mean. You can already play well, so you're looking at it as a purely gaming purchase, whereas I think a lot of people will purchase it to learn or improve on a real guitar, in which case I think it will be a better choice.

Play Dwarf Fortress! Aside from stonemasonry, it also features leather tanning, fat rendering and barrel production.

Sadly not. It seems that tallow is only used in making soap or used as a cooking ingredient. Beeswax can't be used to make candles either. DF is sadly candle less.

From the Rocksmith site -

Quote:
Get plugged in.
Rocksmith will include a unique quarter-inch to USB cable that is the first of its kind, and will allow users to plug any real guitar with a quarter-inch jack directly into their PC/MAC, Xbox 360® or PlayStation 3®. Developed exclusively for Rocksmith, this guitar cable is 11.25' cable turns the guitar's signal from analog to digital, allowing it to be recognized and played through video game consoles for the first time.

Presumably that means the first of its kind, not including all the other 1/4" to USB cables that you can buy.

What would happen if I plugged my 7-string into it? Would it recognise the extra string?

DLC, I guess.

If you do that, it forces you to play only Limp Biscuit and Korn.

Ok, this trailer has me interested. Dependent on price, this could sate my nagging want for a Rock Band 3 pro guitar.

-edit- £49.99 on Amazon. That means an extra tenner over the cost of a normal game. That seems to be better value than £120 for the RB pro guitar, based on the fact I already own guitars. Those who don't are looking at £120 for the game with an Epiphone Les Paul. That's not bad considering you get a real guitar with it and not just something plastic which will work with one game only (to date).

Looking at the trailer, the chord shapes and note placement seems to make more sense than the Harmonix game, too.

Hmm.. the fact that there's a bundle with a guitar interests me. My local Cash Converters always has a wide range of guitars in, all looking much the same to me but at wildly different prices and I've no clue as to which are any good, particularly for someone who has never played one. Does that Epiphone look any good?

Epiphones are basically Gibson's budget range. So yeah, ok for beginners, definitely.

Did anyone buy this? I held off as I figured it'd be something else that I'd start and never finish, but I'm still toying with the idea of getting it eventually.

I bought it just after release and I’ve had a fair bit of fun with it, but I’m probably the ideal customer in that I already had a guitar and hadn’t played for a few years. If you’re starting from scratch I can’t honestly say it would make a good guitar tutor on its own, but maybe a fun accompaniment to proper guitar lessons or just teaching yourself with the aid of books. If you’re picking up a guitar for the first time you’ll be looking at the frets while you struggle to find the notes, which means you won’t be able to concentrate on the screen.

The notes fly towards you in Guitar Hero style, but there’s much more information to take in. Like I say, I haven’t played for a few years but still I found myself struggling to translate what was on the screen in time to play it.

I was very impressed with the adapter cable. Several of the reviews and the Rocksmith website itself warn about latency, especially if you have the setup that I do (everything through HDMI, no external sound system, listening through headphones connected directly to the telly), but I didn’t notice any delay between playing a note and hearing it through the game. A bonus for me was that I don’t have an amp at the moment, so this was a nice incentive to dig out the old guitar.

Another thing that the reviews criticized was the dynamic difficulty that monitors how good you are at a particular section then adds extra notes when it decides when you can handle it. It would have been nicer to have selectable difficulty settings, but I thought it worked surprising well for me.

Btw, I can’t speak for the guitar that’s in the pack, presumably it will be the cheapest Epiphone model, but I can say I’ve had my Epiphone (one of these http://www.thomann.de/gb/epiphone_les_p ... 3godckwAKQ) for around a decade and never had any trouble with it.

My brother is apparently getting me this for Chrimbo. I only have a bass guitar though, so I'm hoping the bass part of this is decent.
