The problem seems to be that the Traveller way of life by definition impinges on other people's way of life. And vice-versa, of course. I'm not sure how you can resolve that, short of a reservation or something ridiculous like that. Give them Norfolk, perhaps.

It is certainly a thorny issue. I think giving them Norfolk would be a tad on the cruel side ;)

Pretty much what I said earlier then, buying cheap land you can't build on and then building on it anyway.

I am narked about these protestors trying to play the victim card, as though the enforcement of well-defined planning law is actually an excuse to discriminate against 'Travellers'. It's bollocks, and supposes that we're all so terrified of being un-PC that the accusation of bigotry will be enough to let them get their own way. Fuck that.

I have never seen a positive story about 'Travellers', as this culture of theirs that they demand respect for seems to be one of avaricious theivery, opportunism and a profound lack of respect for society.

The council chief seems like a solid bloke in all of his interviews. I very much hope this injunction bullshit is overturned on Friday, and the process of removing them resumes before the weekend.

Personal experience more than bigotry. The worst night of my whole time working in retail management involved a gypsy family in our shop. Having to arrange to be picked up round the back of our shop and leave in secret so I could avoid the gang waiting outside for me because it was actually physically impossible for me to replace a Traveller girl's busted Gameboy (because we had none in stock, and even offering a full cash refund on an item that had clearly been broken from misuse wasn't good enough) was all sorts of fun and in no way coloured my opinion of them, especially considering that's only the worst of many, many, many negative encounters I had with the bastards.

I have had a very bad experience with black people. In fact I was attacked by a group of black people and put in hospital for a week. Do I hate all black people for that? No because that wouldn't make any sense whatsoever.

Er... What?
Being a traveler is a life choice. Being black very much isn't.
Romany != traveler.

I still can't quite bring myself to believe that the word "pikey" is racist. Something-ist, sure.

[edit]Sorry if that's already been covered. I only browsed the the posts and they were hard to read anyway due to all the massive horses.

Er What? I think you missed the point. Or if not I don't see the relevance of yours.

You are born a traveller it is not a conscious decision (in the vast majority of cases) and whilst you may distinguish between Romanies and Travellers a lot of people don't.

Nice to see you having your customary final poke though ;)

Bollocks. You're rushing rather fast into "don't have a clue what you're talking about" territory.

I hate it when black people refuse to integrate, get jobs, pay taxes, progress in society, add something to their community rather than take take take, become successful, run successful businesses, contribute to society culturally, academically, socially, etc etc etc.

They do? Oh noes!

I'm not so sure it's precisely one or the other. Certainly the woman I speak of was born into a travelling community. So, as a child your choices of lifestyle are minimal to none. She received no schooling or home education so can neither read nor write, when older she was mistreated, beaten, and subjected to the 'accepted' treatment of women as property in the community. With no contact outside of the travelling community and often under very close watch, many people who may *want* to change their lifestyle do not have access to the information that might aid that change. Often married very young, not able to find out information and not able to read or write or know which agencies to turn to for help, I'm not sure it is always a 'choice' so much as something which some people learn that they have no escape from.

It can certainly be difficult, I'm not denying that.

Somewhat easier than changing your race, however. Being a traveler is a choice, at both the individual and the community level.

So shall we call it what it was, then? A well organised travelling abuse club.

So whilst you're not denying that it is unacceptable to discriminate against a visual ethnic minority, it is perfectly fine to be racist towards an ethnic minority whose 'difference' is based on culture rather than biology? I hope that you do't have any Jewish neighbours.

I'm not discriminating against anyone. Pay attention.
And it's still not racist.

That's the "community" choosing that, though (for want of a better phrase). If they wanted to let their kids get educated, they could (and, indeed, some do, and that's where my knowledge of "how they work" comes from). Sadly, though, the majority (and it is very much the majority) shun outsiders (ie. non-travelers) and act pretty much like Mimi describes - they're simply not very nice people, especially if you're a girl.

I don't know if 'Irish Traveller' can be considered an 'ethnic minority'. Principally irish in origin, yes, but that's a nationality. Everything else is a chosen mode of living. Trekking around in a camper van does not a culture make. Being resident, even transiently, in a country requires you to comply with local and national law regardless of what you and a cohort of other families in caravans would like to do.

I think being Romany makes you a "real" ethnic minority, but I don't know how much the two cross over (although I suspect 'not much').

If an Indian moves to the UK & doesn't go back for 10 years does he stop being an indian?

Given that the eligibility for naturalisation is a period of 5 years, he could well be British. Additionally, should he have any children, they would be eligible for British nationality.

I can read & write. Was grammar school educated & have 7 GCSEs. I am employed & work 52 hours a week even paying my taxes. I do NOT have a criminal record & was brought up being told that if I was ever caught stealing I would have my fingers cut off! I treat people as they treat me have never robbed a shed nor laid tarmac. Yet you so called 'more intelligent non travellers' see fit to insult me & my entire family. Yeah of course it is bollocks and to be frank the second part of that sentence is hypocrisy in the highest degree.

Also the poke comment was a joke. The dust had settled though until you arrived on the scene, your timing is always impeccable.

I doubt this thread is in the top 7000 pages of results for the term.

More likely to be an existing member of the board doing the puppeteering thing. I'm sure there are other forums on the internets having much more aggressive discussions than the one here.

You look forward to examples of why you can't choose what family you are born into? Well I would explain the birds and the bees to you but to be frank I have better things to do with my time.
