Anyone else tentatively excited? I'm on the fence at the minute. I don't think it'll be as good as the first game, but it does look considerably better than the last effort, and it also looks "really good" next to recent games. Maybe we should just accept that the original will never be matched? I mean, let's face it, developers aren't interested in copying it because it's too inaccessible to the CoD crowd. Anyway, here's a short bit of gameplay demonstrating the different ways you can attack any given section of the game:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzHQ2cTj ... dded#at=17

Lots of people are complaining about the consoleification inevitably, and the third person bits. Personally I'm not arsed as long as it has a decent stab at being anywhere near as deep and open ended as the first game.

You mention CoD style accessibility, but I think CoD's perks system goes a long way to bringing RPG-esque character progression into mainstream FPSs. It might help Deus Ex's acceptance, rather than hurt it.

Oh totally - I wasn't knocking it - I was just saying the devs are unlikely to mimic the original game as much as the diehard fans would like them to, preferring instead to make it more accessible and, as the hardcore fans of the first game would say, "dumbed down and shit". Personally I think that gameplay I posted above looks ace, and I want it now. I just hope it's consistently good throughout with lots of options for completing any given section, rather than starting off like that and becoming a corridor shooter as the devs ran out of time.

I'm so desperate for a decent open world stealthy game that I've started playing Hitman Blood Money again.

edit: I didn't really reply to what you actually said - that the RPG elements of CoD ought to help people accept more complex RPG elements in a game like Deus Ex - I agree with that too! But, the developers of this clearly don't, which is why they're making it considerably more accessible than the first game, which is a bit of a shame, but yeah, it still looks good enough to me. Having said that, it's easy to confuse decent accessibility measures with "dumbing down". Maybe Human Revolution is as complex as the first game, but it's just really slickly done. Guess we'll have to wait to find out. Either way, I want that game in that video in that Xbox on my shelf now.

Terrible enough to be #34 in the BeeX Top 100 Games of all time.

Quote:
Acting as an agent for an elite anti-terrorist organisation in the year 2050, you are JC Denton, a cyborg fighting terrorism in a first person shooter with role playing elements. Unlike a traditional FPS, you can earn experience for murdering people in the face (or sneaking through vents around them if that’s more your style) and use them to customise your character and complement your playstyle. For example, a sneaky character would be good at lockpicking and hacking computers, whereas a face-murderer would make jiggy with the rockets. To further enhance your character, you can choose augmentations which are found throughout the game. These enable you to run faster, lift more, punch harder, see in infra red — typical cyberpunk things.

Playing the game is good fun, although the beginning can be frustrating as (like with all RPGs) you start out as weak as kitten, despite being allegedly highly trained. As the game progresses, the player is drawn across the world and through America’s finest conspiracy theories, meeting many interesting characters along the way (and face-murdering many of them). The level designs begin well, with atmosphere and nice little details such as reading the emails of a pair of lovers planning their wedding. However, later levels seem to be a little rushed, although that is not to say that there aren’t some strokes of genius in parts.

You can complete objectives in many ways, sneaking around the back door, and hacking a computer to turn the automated defence guns on their owners, or knocking on the front door with a rocket and shaking hands with the occupants with a shotgun. The range of weapons and tools are varied enough to hold attention, and the ability to modify weapons by adding a telescopic sights, red dots and silencers increases this. Players can only carry a set volume of kit though, pistols taking up less room that a rocket launcher for example, which further increases the sense of character specialisation: do you carry a lockpicks and datatools to get through doors, or more ammuntion to blast through them? Overall, Deus Ex is a rewarding and challenging game, and well worth a second or third playthrough as there’s often more little bits to find in the large levels.

I've never played any Deus' but those videos look lush. If it's anything like the Hitman series I'll have no problem whatsoever parting with some cash money (2 and Blood Money being probably two of my favourite games. That reminds me, I never did manage to silent assassin that last level on Blood Money...)

Btw: I had some problems with Blood Money on Friday when I tried to play. Got an error message saying it didn't support PAL-50. Strange because I'm running though HDMI... Anyway, my Xbox was set to '50' but having a HDMI lead plugged in removes the option to up it to 60, so I had to briefly fire it up with my VGA lead to change it to 60 then plug the HDMI back in and now it works fine. Just a heads up if anyone tries to have a go and encounters the same error!

Looks interesting. As long as it doesn't force you to do stealthy bits, and always gives you the shooty-shooty option I'll consider buying this day one.

Already a thread with some other stuff in it:

And yes, I am looking forward to it.

Also, "inaccessible to CoD crowd"? The first was hardly War and Peace, FFS.

I think you're overestimating the CoD masses. But regardless - it's not me who is making the game more "accessible", it's the developers. I'm just commenting on the uproar in that YouTube thread and beyond - people are complaining that it has been dumbed down since the first game, presumably to appeal to the "CoD crowd". It's not me who is saying the first game would be inaccessible - it's the developers. See also: The second game which was disappointingly shit because it had been "dumbed down" - a decision by the developers to appeal to the masses. Or they're genuinely stupid and thought they were making the game better.

Generally I don't give a shit about games, but I've been following the development of this pup since it was annouced bloody years ago. It's been quietly developed by Eidos Montreal for aaaaages, with the merest scraps of news and screenies to go on. The latest gameplay and FMV looks all very nice and smooth, sort of like the DX2 interface but not completely shite and clunky this time.

Anyway, long story short, I rarely buy games, and I even more rarely buy them on release. For this I shall be.

That video made me yawn so hard. Hopefully being early in the game it'll get a lot more clever and complex than that.

Well yeah looking at the vid, it seems to be the very start of a mission, possibly the very first mission, so I imagine/hope it'll get more than a little bit more complex.

Quietly optimistic about this, and have been carefully avoiding detailed updates about it.

I do wish they'd stop giving films and games stupid names, though. It's Deus Ex 3, okay? Yes, it takes place before, who cares? It's the third one. Giving them poncey names just confuses things.

The "bourne" series were the worst for this, obv.

I heard "on the internet" that the preview build of this (I think ~the first 10 hours of the game, with minor bugs) has leaked, and is now available (on the internet).

PC version obv.

A few hours in.

So far, it's a lot like deus ex, although one big change is the melee combat. To some degree it was rubbish in the first game, but in the new one you have an instant takedown move with (initially) a really long cooldown, so it's not possible to take on more than one person with melee (although there is probably melee weapons in the game, I just went for the tranq dart gun at the start).

Quite pretty for the most part, but bits of it are way ugly. Not sure if the faces that pop up in the corner when someone talks to you are final, but they are not very good looking.

It's fairly obviously a console port from some of the UI stuff. There's lots of stuff where it is showing me Xbox/PS3 inputs despite not having a controller plugged in, but mouse and keyboard works fine.

The cover system ain't great. I don't think I'll use it too much.

It's really easy to die.

Music is all lovely.

It's pretty jarring how it fairly frequently switches to obviously prerendered cutscenes. They even do it for stupid things that could really easily be done in game. Like your bloke walking into a building, for example.

I imagine "There needs to be a computer expert who is a prick" and "The guy running the powerful organisation you work for turns out to be a baddie" were pretty high up on the design document.

The conversation system is pretty close to mass effect.

It's definitely targeted at a big mainstream audience, and nothing I've seen yet is a significant advancement on the real ideas of the first one, but it is shiny and fun.

Load times are HUGE, but hopefully because it isn't final.

Ok, now I've completed it (the leaked start of the game). I'd say it's a fair bit less than 10 hours, more like 6, and a big chunk of that is load times.

Ends on a rubbish boss fight. The guy sneaks up on you in a cut scene. Which is bollocks.

Just me then.

I think the cutscenes are an obvious problem. They are used to funnel you into choices that you may or may not want to make, which is against the principals set out in the first game really. Not to mention the characters are easily labelled as "Going to turn out to be a baddie", "Going to die before the game is out" and "Going to be the guy who is a prick the whole time" within the first 5 minutes.

Any questions from people who can't be arsed downloading the leaked build?

No, but the spoilerish nature of your posts has annoyed me a bit. I don't want to know about final bossfights. Grrr!

Hoping it gets a little more polish before I go and buy it on release.

Buy a new PC. It's worth it.

To say your actions affect the plot is an incredible, incredible understatement. The critical path of possible outcomes must have been mind-boggling for the dev team.

I'd love to have a punt on this but realistically I ain't gonna play it when I'm in full WoW mode, one to grab in the Steam sale and have a look at when I'm next on WoW downtime methinks.

I'm hoping that Eurogamer do a Digital Foundry Face-Off soon, be interesting to see how the different versions fare against each other.

Bought the 360 version... Got it for £32.50 though because I had a few points on my GAME card from the 3DS purchase.
