In our bathroom we have a fourteen year old one of these..

http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B003KTM65K/r ... B003KTM65K

It looks identical and I'm sure it's the same unit. How many wires do they have and how hard are they to change? I am guessing you need to do it from the loft?

Basically some dood has quoted us £80 fitted which I don't think is bad. However, it's still £55 to do something that could well be very very easy to do.

You're probably always best off with an electrician for any mains work like this. The last one was in for 14 years, so it's a small price to pay for peace of mind. Having said that, it could be a ridiculously easy, safe job for you to attempt yourself, so I dunno!

It should be no more difficult than wiring a plug. Just get one that physically fits in the hole. 55 sounds dear for an extractor fan. Don't buy it from Amazon.

Check with Joans though.

The extractor is £25, he means £55 for the labour!

I done mine myself. I can never remember which wire is which, though, so I leave the mains on.

EDIT: I'm sure Joans will do it.

Well of course I had to investigate... The unit is an Xpelair DX100WT.

You push two clips and the bottom half comes off (has a power pin thing that detatches as you remove) and on that part are male pins (3 off) a fan and the guard ETC.

There's also a small circuit board with a resistor and a cap and what looks like a potentiometer :)

When I removed it I thought that either Columbians had lived here before or that some one was throwing handfuls of talc into the air. It was literally full of white powder. Once hoovered off I realised that the white powder was ground fan :D haha that explains why it has been rattling like a pig.

Tis indeed three wires. A brown one, a blue one and a white one. I went to Expelair's website and found a manual for the newer units (they look the same only they're all fuckin' fancy now with moisture sensors ETC) and yeah, same thing pretty much.

I need to undo 4 screws, hang it out on the duct and remove the duct and wire up three wires. Ten minute job (once the power is off) and I'm not paying some wankoid £55 for that. Honestly, when I say it's as easy as changing a lightbulb it's actually easier.

Absolutely. Also, this is his 'under the table' price meaning no invoice and no proof he was fucking with our house at all. And I'm not overly comfortable with that if I'm honest. He could ghetto rig it and then fuck off into the night. Sod it, will do it myself.

Ah well, sorted. Just remember to leave the mains switched on so you know it's working when you've wired it up, and thoroughly wet your hands for extra insulation.

FFS. So I just ran the model through google. Up comes this.

http://www.hunters-wholesalers.co.uk/xp ... 33118.html

£11.49

XX100 models are supplied without a kit and are ideal for replacement applications or where a suitable outlet already exists.

Which is what we would have got. Also, that's the 100T with the timer.I bet I can find the switch one even cheaper.

I fucking hate builders (sorry if there are any here). Robbing cunts.

Without timer is a tenner FFS. £70 to connect two fucking wires.

Indeed, I had to fix two of these in the ladies toilets at Church. They're pretty eaasy to fix. The ladies weren't so impressed though.

So I told mum I had ordered one and she was well chuffed..

Then she tells me how when she moved in the surveyor put on the list of faults "bathroom extractor fan makes rumble when switched off".

So, she calls an electrician for a quote. £150.

£140 to connect two wires and undo and refit four screws and a four inch plastic duct pipe. Thankfully at that time she just couldn't afford it which saved her.

Big call for lightbulbs in Sweden, too.

Hows it going over there, guy?

We had what England would consider a decent amount of snow this morning. Yes it is cold. And that's enough of derailing the fan tread. Fans fans fans.

That's because it's a fan numbnuts :D

Mind you, I'm a fan of you Dave :luv: (see you round by the bins for our nightly meeting? ;) )

Haha.

In other news the fan arrived at 9:30. I opened it up and looked at the manual and it shit me up a bit..

Ammendment - this fan will not operate unless all three wires are connected..

What happened was they phoned us back yesterday morning to say that they didn't have the plain one without the timer and would instead send one with a timer in that over runs. This sounded like a good idea because when I take a banging poo it tends to whiff and Mum doesn't like leaving lights on.

Any way, I noticed the old fan had three pins on it (it unplugged out of the ceiling all nice and tidy) and when I removed the cap there were indeed three wires. I then realised that we indeed have two light switches one above the other, one is apparently an isolating switch. So I fitted it and it works. Had to lower the timer though because otherwise it wants to run on for half an hour (for student showers I would imagine) and now it overruns for about two minutes..

Then when I was clearing up I realised our old model was a DX100WT. And, there was a potentiometer on there just like on the new one. So, I summise that the WT means 'with timer' and ours was supposed to have a timer, explaining what the burnt black part used to be :D haha.

Job's a goodun, happy Saturday every one ! :luv:
