Me and Lord Rixondale and his wife have an awesomely winning system where we meet up once a week (usually a Tuesday fact fans) and take it in turns to cook and choose films to watch. He or she who cooks, chooses movie. Wine is drunk copiously. I usually go for old films like Powell & Pressburger, or painfully worthy classics, or films like Dark City. Dixon usually goes for Hitchcock films, top comedies or cheesy winning Arnie 80's actioner flicks. The wafe teeters between excellent old romances (Grand Hotel, Breakfast at Tiffany's) and diabolical 80's chick-flick schlock. We're dreading the inevitable Dirty Dancing on her next go, I can tell you. Though she did have one of the greatest crowd-pleasing winners before, the unexpectedly awesome 'Adventures in Babysitting.'

You should all try this, its great. Either you get to take time off cooking for yourself and kick back and enjoy something new, or you get to try out top cooking experiments and glow with pride when both film and fodder go down a treat. Also, you get pleasantly inebriated.

Anyway, Rixondale, I know you're off feeling slightly peakey today - but do you figure you're well enough for Meal & Movie tonight? I'm working ten 'till seven on Thursday, so I get an extra hour in bed in the morning. All the better for sleeping off alcohomol.

Droman, itsallwater, bagwaa and me have a film night, too. It's not weekly, though. And we've only done it once so far, but we're doing it again next Tuesday.

I saw Dirty Dancing for the first time the other weekend and it was nowhere near as bad as I was anticipating.

I watched When Harry Met Sally for the first time last night. I was surprised at a Billy Crystal film being good.

I watched Point Break for the first time last night. Keanu is not bad in it at all, but the direction is weird and the main surfer dude is not a great actor. Overall: fun.

What is it with you Scotchlanders? Wullie was watching The Usual Suspects for the first time on the day of the BBBC.

I put forward (and then did nothing with) the idea of a film club via an Xbox Live Party - infact MS are getting something like that off the ground anyhow, but with the 360 reading vids off usb it's straight forward already. I made a thread about it.

A night with the house to myself is quite rare though...

Aye, I mind that. The thing is you can't stream to someone else's Xbox can you? Whereas if you broadcast you can show them anything there & then, even rarer stuff that's hard to come by :)

This meal and movie Lord Rixondale made home-made cheese burgers, with quality mince and egg packed into tasty patties. Home-made seasoned thick cut chips as well. The film was 'King of Kong' a documentary about the world of competitive video games in the US, namely Donkey Kong. It was a most compelling tale of a genuinely nice-chap contender with a mild case of OCD going up against the reigning Donkey Kong champion. I shall not reveal the twists and turns in this extremely compelling film, but let us say that it played out like a Will Ferrell Dodgeball style film, but for real, and was hugely endearing, a little pitiful and very engaging. Also, two of the people in it reminded me of characters from Trailer Park Boys.

I rate it most highly, an eight out of ten. A must see. Kudos Rixondale!

Edit: Top review here from 'New York Movies', nicely sumarises it with mild spoilers:

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
Some folks refuse to believe that Seth Gordon's film about two men vying for the title of World's Greatest Donkey Kong Player could be a true story. It's too perfect: the arrogant mullet pitted against the sad dad in a contest adjudicated by self-appointed refs who look like they woke up in a car. No waycould anyone swagger like Billy Mitchell, who talks about himself in the third person while wearing the gaming crown on a head of hair that screams, "Party in the back, bitches!" No waySteve Wiebe really told his crying kid to waitaminute, waitaminutewhile attempting to ascend Mount Dorkus. But, yeah, it's all true—every magical, exhilarating, infuriating, dumbfounding, jaw-dropping second of Gordon's miniature masterpiece. Ostensibly about Mitchell, who began his reign as Donkey Kong world champ in 1982, King of Kongis as much about the perils of hubris and the price of heartbreak; like the trailer says, it's about a loser who wants to be a winner and a winner "who refuses to lose" and comes off looking like an ass. Mitchell's the longtime champ, and Wiebe's the longtime chump—a guy who's failed at everything, save for his marriage and his Donkey Kong mastery, which Mitchell and his cronies fail to recognize—despite all the evidence—when Wiebe breaks Mitchell's record. How Mitchell screws Wiebe, and to what level he's willing to stoop—that's at the heart of The King of Kong, which would play like dark comedy were there not such honest-to-God cruelty at its core.

Meal and movie again tonight, my go.

Was too tired to think of something to cook, and it's payday, so went crazy in a deli instead. As such it'll be toasted brie on rustic loaf with garlic and cherry tomatoes, and pate on toast, with a salad of olives and silverskin onions. I am now slightly poorer. Will match up with a red, natch.

Anyway, finding it tricky to choose a film too. Thinking Amelie, which I've never seen but lots say it's awesome and a real 'Pete' film. Either that or Blithe Spirit, the delightful Coward/Lean film about ex-wives who are amusingly murderous ghosts, with Rex Harrison and Margaret Rutherford.

We watched Blithe Spirit, which was actually really good. I liked it because it contained the most amusing posh man in cinematic history. He said "Damn your Native Vulgarity" at one point which made wine come out of my nose. This film is Recommended.

Pete's food was nice too. Haven't had Pate for aaages and I will have it again soon. Wine was also too good and therefore work was spent in a hungover stupor.

I haven't seen Delicatessen. I don't think I would have chosen Amelie myself but one of my friends told me I'd love it and then one night when we had nothing else to do he made me rent it.

Just watched Batman Begins with Jen, I had seen it before but didn't really remember it. Really enjoyed it and the next one is on Sky Movies tonight so i have set that to record.

People!

Which of the following Cagney films from my box set do I show tonight, to accompany hotdogs and beer?

Public Enemy
The Roaring Twenties
Angels with Dirty Faces
White Heat

I'm finding it a real pickle to choose. ?:|

The Day the Earth Stood Still
Angels with Dirty Faces
African Queen

No drink will be accompanying this meal and movie, owing to Pipes & Ales sickness. :S
