Are you playing it in single player? I can only imagine this is the reason. I only played it in co-op so far, which can render even a rubbish game somewhat fun, so.

I played it twice with Grim..., 1.5 times with Toby, and quite a bit more of it on my own.

5 is less innovative than 4. In fact, 5 comes across almost as a next-gen remake of 4, to my mind, so it feels less impressive when you look back on it. But in terms of the fun I had playing them, they are very close together.

I don't actively dislike Burny Pee. I'm just highly "meh" on the entire thing.

But he does like Unreal Tournament, so he gets some stuff right. Resident Evil's still shit mind.

Thing is though, however good coop is or isn't, having good coop in what is basically a single player game, if it is to the detriment of the single play game, is a bad thing.

I don't know whether to blame Epic or Capcom for it being shit though.

Why would that be a co-op thing? There's nothing about it being co-op that would prevent you being able to pause.

The whole game was built around it, so it was never a problem. The four quick-select slots cover all the guns you need to change between on the fly, which is considerably more fluid that the RE4 suitcase.

I expected she would be, but actually she was fine. I even trusted her with magnums toward the end (she sensibly only use them during boss fights).

There were rare exceptions -- she healed me a few times when I would have preferred she kept it for when I was more damaged -- but the NPC AI was a very pleasant surprise.

I've not seen £20 of value from RE5 yet. Buying BP on the same day, for the same price, may have been a mistake. I just can't sit playing it for more than half an hour without getting bored.

Given I've only had the 360 this year, my hit rate on other games is pretty low:

Quantum of Solace. Came 'Free'. Shite. Easy points
Fallout 3 - made the mistake of falling for the rave reviews without considering whether I like that type of game. Gave away.
Cod4. Got for free from my brother. Fun.
Banjo Kazooie/Sega Superstars tennis - Came free, gave to brother after playing for 5 minutes each.

L4D. Great fun, overpaid for it but taken far more than £27 of value from it.

FIFA 09. Will last me a while as a footie sim but far prefer multiplayer and the servers will switch off soon.

Er, in every previous game it paused whenever you went into your inventory screen. It doesn't in 5 because the way the game's been designed with co-op in mind. I think that's to its detriment, personally.

Admittedly, I've only played the demo. If you're quite happy to say that it doesn't affect it, then fair enough. I can just imagine in heated battles things getting a bit tricksy.

Also, just general gameplay stuff. Having an AI partner at all times changes the game a lot, and I don't think it is for the better. There's also lots of waiting around for her, and she uses ammo at silly times. Also there was more than one occasion where she died from being stupid, or used a recovery item on me when I didn't want her to.

Sounds like playing any co-op game with Myp, to be honest.

It barely effects it, you very quickly get used it. It can get a bit tricksy if you need to use health and don't have that in a quick select slot, so you have to plan ahead and run to cover before fiddling in the inventory. On the other hand, swapping from, say, pistol to shotgun to rifle is a single keypress, rather than InventoryPause-dpad-A-Use-A-B from other Resident Evils.

It really doesn't get in the way. I still think the game needs a good kick up the ass to bring it up to speed with modern things, but fuck me was it ace fun. Much better on the second playthrough, too.

It was a design choice. I could list you 10 co-op games that allow you to pause and access inventory.

Tap B to call her, or tap Down to put her on "Follow" mode; she'll stick closer to you.

If she's on Follow mode, she almost always uses her pistol. If you put her on Attack, she uses rifle or shotgun. I've never seen her use a rocket launcher, and I've only seen her use magnums in boss fights. That all feels pretty reasonable to me (speaking as someone who completed RE4 twice and RE5 four times).

How did she die? If her health is getting battered, you should close up so you can heal her if she goes into Dying state. And I assure you the NPC doesn't fuck up QTEs like I do.

That happened to me a few times. Overall though I was leaving herbs behind, so I got over it.

What, when playing online? I can think of hardly any online co-op shooters that let you pause at all (Gears of War & 2 are the only ones I can think of).

It's not a shooter. If it was a shooter, you wouldn't have an inventory screen at all. It's closer to an RPG in that respect.

I have RE5. I enjoy that it shares the same sense of lunacy as RE1.

I've not quite got the hang of the controls, and have only played it for about half an hour. I just need to find someone to co-op it with, as it's supposed to be better than single player.

Also, just a load of the coop stuff killed the atmosphere. Like, where would in RE4 be "Open door, creepy noise, next area", RE5 was "Open door *COOP UI FLASH FLASH FLASH BEEP BEEP BEEP YOU ARE PLAYING A VIDEO GAME* next area"

Or the "puzzles" which were all just "kill the dudes and pick up both keycards".

See this is the problem. It wants to be gears of war. It really really wants to be Gears of war. Without Shinja Mikami at the helm, they haven't got a clue of what to do with RE, so they just made a bad Gears of War clone that is seriously held back by all the archaic game design choices that they have made. It's a game that wants to put you into combat scenarios that it hasn't really got the controls for you to handle. Basically all of my deaths were caused by limitiations in the controls scheme, that a decent modern game shouldn't have.

CliffyB was pretty open about Gears of War's biggest influence being RE4, you know. Is it any wonder that GoW1+1 and RE4+1 have similarities?

It....really doesn't want to be Gears of War. Have you played any of the previous RE games? The controls in 5 are a breeze compared to trying to play 3, for example.
