People seemed interested in this when I was posting about it earlier, so I thought I'd actually try it out (it's shareware). I loaded it up and scanned in the stack of things on my coffee table. Here's the results:

It's very slick. It shows you a little video grab from the Mac's built in camera with a green outline box and some red gridlines. You wave the case around slightly with the barcode in the outline box, the Mac beeps, and you go on to the next one. After beeping, it reads out (in a machine generated voice) the title so you can check it scanned the right barcode without having to look at the screen. I was tearing through them as fast as I could pick them up and put them back down. The screen there is what I was presented with once I had scanned the boxes -- it looked up all the covers, details, etc on its own. I think that's damned impressive.

I've always wanted to play with a barcode scanner. Previously it was the realm of shop droids, but Doctor Gaywood has enabled us to indulge in our own home. Not since the Barcode Battler have so many nerds been happy.

I've got ShopSavvy on my HTC Magic. I've finally gone geeky over a phone.

I've got delicious library. It is both pointless and awesome.

It does do cool stuff like 'list by price on amazon' and stuff though. Oh and like a real library you can 'check stuff out' when you loan it to your friends.

It won't work on my Mac, though :(

Anyone know of a PC one with the barcode scanny-scanny?

It's am impressive feat of product design that I would consider spending Real Cash Money on something so pointless, just because it is so awesome.

Is this 'cos you have a PPC machine? I have an old version that runs on my PPC ibook despite my purchase (I too spent real money on a pointless thing) getting me the newer intel only version. So you could do that?

I once attended a two hour long meeting on barcodes and stuff like that. Suffice to say, unless it's a 2D barcode now, or 128C, I'm not interested.
