The story basically says that Virgin will be offering an iTunes style download service but for a set fee per month. They reckon the price would be comparable to "a couple of albums" a month.

Initially I like the sounds of this, providing the back catalogue is there to support it. I don't like popular music so I want obscure stuff to download and I would like good quality MP3s of them.

The fee would be absorbed by my current virgin bill so it would go from the joint account (don't tell the missus!) so on paper, it could be something I could be interested in.

The constant underlying threat of being thrown in jail if I use torrents is almost bearing down on my conscience. I'd like to play fair, if only they gave me a chance and this looks like it could be it.

What's everyone elses thoughts?

I wonder what happens to your music/films when you switch to some other supplier.

It'd be a subscription though? Of 20-30 quid per month? Nah, no thanks, I don't spend that much on music in the first place. That said, I don't really pirate any either..

I still can't bring myself to pay £8 to download an album when I can buy the cd for a fiver. The problem is that I'd be replacing all the stuff I've already got mp3s of, so it feels like I'm throwing money away.

I guess if I really like it there's a chance I've already got the cd. I might start buying vinyl again and just download the mp3s to put on my iPhone.

Also, I've got Spotify, thanks.

The article link is the low bandwidth one without stock pictures of pirates and exciting flashy graphics alongside.

Ah... the spazzy version is my fault! It's what I read at work. I used to work for a bank and the low graphics version was the only version we could access. I kind of got used to it and still use it.
