WeeWar (RL) looks pretty tops. It's (a lot) like Advance Wars, but with hexagons rather than squares. You play in a browser, and it emails you when it's your turn.
Myself (Grimdotdotdot) and Dr. Gaywood (PenLlawen) are enjoying a game right now. Join in!

I don't know Battle Isle, but it practically is Advance Wars.

You can't join in with Gaywood and I (1v1 only), but you can start a new game and invite me (Grimdotdotdot).

keeping in the hexagon talk, i recommend everyone the freeware game Battle of Wesnoth. It's got dubious anime graphics, but otherwise its ace. I also recommend Fantasy Wars, which would be a classic if it wasn't for the absolute nasty difficulty.

battle isle 2 on the amiga was about the most frustrating not appearing thing for me on the amiga, longed for it for months, and then it didn't appear.

history line was lovely though, and very innovative in a way... my most played was bi'93, after a great review by mark winstanly in ap

How can the units recover? Just by staying still?

Didn't know it was possible, but just noticed a tank recovering.

Click it, then select "repair" from the menu. I'm not sure if it's random or if you get more health when you are on a base or something. You can't move or attack if you do this though.

I think the fact that the fights have randomness in them is going to be a game-breaker for me :(
Shame, because it's so close to being perfect.

the game is a bit crap. And it's not because i'm a bad loser.

i think the Heavy Tanks are overpowered. It could be a good strategic decision making to ponder between buying units now or wait another turn for a big one, but light tanks can't even scratch heavy ones, so the balance goes of the window.

Too bad Wesnoth doesn't have play-by-email. It would be awesome (except that we are playing on our works)

What's bothering me is the (quite big) random factor in battles. Advance Wars had no random element at all and it was the better game for it, I think.

I dunno, they seemed less powerful in the game I played with Grim.... Perhaps we've all been unlucky with our dice rolls in combat?

every tbs game i played had a luck factor. Be it the chance to hit, the damage "dice", or other factors. The strategy is always pulling the chances into your favor.

The problem is that this game doesn't explain what's behind each random event. Why sometimes the units get 1 hit point when repaired and other times get 2.
