That's for choosing who you want, not for choosing what they do.

It's a trial, guys - we'll see how it works, then we'll think about changing it back if it doesn't work.

This is true.

So it seems a bit silly to then have a vote on an issue and then ignore the result because you disagree with it.

Overturning the results of a legitimate election......
I'm not so sure it was, for several reasons. Firstly, we have plenty of people running around this forum with axes to grind and sockpuppet accounts. Secondly, the poll didn't have a "don't care" option, which means people might have voted on a whim. Most importantly, I think the users of the sports forum's opinions should count for more than the general board users -- they being the ones most directly effected by it. People who don't discuss sports at all (like me) have only the small inconvenience of skipping the odd thread; people who do have the larger inconvenience of clicking around moving between forums. On this basis, many users of the sports forum argued in the thread quite passionately that they wanted it moved into General Discussion, and on reflection, we considered it worthwhile to experiment on a trial basis.

Oh dear, this is my fault, isn't it.

To clarify what I was saying , I think it is a stupid idea to have one single element of discussion sectioned off from the rest of the forums. Yes, I posted something vaguely sport-ish in the main forums ( :o 'teh horrors!') but how far do you take it? The post was, 'oh, how old do you think this person looks', but that person happened to be a footballer. So, if you wanted to post about Sir Beckham of the United States of Vacuous doing something useless with Mistress Vacuous, does that go in the sports forum? What about the recent conspiracy to kill unfortunate spate of sports commentators deaths? Sports or main forum?

What if I don't give the name but say 'how old do you think this man is?'

Image

Twenty eight?! My God, what has happened in his lifetime?

Anyway, these are the reasons that I think the sports forum is a stupid idea. But if there was a vote, then there was a vote, but I also think that you should bare in mind that the people that voted for that outcome are not the same people that are still here. People have left, joined, moved on, changed their minds, the active members of this forum are not the same group of people as when the forum started. The idea for a separate sports forum would not have been so early on the agenda if this place wasn't like some WoS reborn to start with, but it isn't trying to be that now.

I forget the sports thread is there. It is dead and useless. It is true that not everyone likes sports, but it is also true that not everyone likes threads on food/beer/beex meets/pet donkeys/clothes hanger fetishes, etc, but we don't separate all other interests into a minutiae of forum divisions.

I do not post into the sports forum because a) I forget it is there and that I might read it, b) everyone else forgets it is there so hardly anyone posts in it.

I'm not against trying something new if other people are OK with it, but I wasn't having a go about the sports forum, just saying what a fabulous waste of time I think it is separating one single thing away from the entire rest of the discussion. If people are happy to integrate the two without being stupid for a little while and then having another vote with the current members of the forum, then that's good, but only if people can do that without being silly.

It is getting a bit silly over the whole mod conspiracy thing anytime anyone makes a decision. Nobody will stand for mod next time around

I'm sorry I felt compelled to say something, but the fact is it was an issue we voted on, that's all. It opens the floodgates for more moaning, even though it's made me have a moan. Dig?

I still love everyone. Dearly.

This is like that time the BnB thread was locked for a trial period, and them some irritating poster had a massive go at myp about it.

Hang on - that was me. :)

Chaps - some sports threads have been moved onto the main board to see how it works out. It's not the end of the world. Anyone who's militantly against this and wants the sport talk moved to a sub-forum should bear in mind you'd then be leaving it open for other niche interests (say, the 80s or fish puns) to be dumped in sub-fora that noone except you goes to.

I didn't mean you, this, or anyone/thing else - I mean as a whole, it just seems to be all of the time now and is getting a tad boring :o( I thought this might have happened less as the forum established itself, but it actually seems to be happening more.

I stand by what I said, though. I think there is a difference between mods saying 'well, we ignore you, THIS is how it is going to be from now on' and 'well, we've tried that, let's give this a go and see how people feel about it after a little while', especially when people were asked to make a decision on something that they had no knowledge of how it might pan out (volume of sports threads, popularity of sports threads, etc) and so each way should have been trialled before the vote. As I mentioned above as well, the people that frequent the forums now have changed somewhat from who used to be here. We have new people, we have lost some people, and some people may change their minds if they are given a chance. I don't think anyone has given hint that this is a permanent decision, but it's good to give things a go and reassess things after a while.

Hold a vote AFTER you've trialled it - we've all experienced the board with a separate hidden sports forum, now let people see what it is like this way, THEN make a decision. To mind that makes far more sense.

We need something great to happen in the news so that we can have something to be happy about and talk at great lengths about. Like a pony born with a rainbow on it. Nope, a UNICORN with rainbow on it.

I'm considering a "drama" sub-forum, whence all RADA-esque posts will be banished. It will then look like a load of disaffected handbags shouting at each other. I will then serialise it in the Times culture supplement.

Ok, I'll ignore some votes too.

I WON SONGWARS!!!

Technically I did as Sheepeh pipped me by being a double song using cheatzor! Kiss, for the love of Pob! Beaten by Kiss! Fuck it any ways, everytime I see Iggy Pop selling car insurance I die a little more inside. I think really I'm just missing Dimrill too much, I've gone a bit serious and shit. I will return to normal sub-routine shortly.

I've changed my idea for Dawson's Creek. It's now going to be a BETEO Twitter forum called 'Bitter'. Anything of no interest to anyone else will be automagically moved there.

I'm working on the changorhythms as we speak.

I've reeled in the fish puns and moved them to their own sub-forum. The sub-forum is handily called "general discussion"
