I'm not sure if I've asked this here before at some point, but after a chat with a friend yesterday about these, I thought I'd ask if anyone recognises them, or knows what they're called (if there are other names around) as I'm fairly sure they are particularly regional.

Edit: should have said: it's puff pastry and sugar, sometimes with jam, or currants if you're a deviant, covered in icing and grated coconut.

I uploaded it into Amazon's Rekognition image analysis system, to see if that could work it out.

I've never seen a puff pastry version, but I've seen coconut buns.

These are always puff pastry. It may be that they don't really exist outside of the place that I know them from, and I was wondering just how localised they are.

The fuck is a London Cheesecake?

They're called 'cheesecakes'. I've only heard of them referred to as 'London cheesecakes' on the internet, but then I'm from London, so it may be like 'Chinese food' is to Chinese people just 'food'.

But I've never seen one outside of London, which is why I asked if they were known as something else in other places.

And it's not a Cheese cake.

I think it's called that because the grated coconut looks like grated cheese? Goodness knows. I remember asking my grandmother why they were called cheesecakes when I was about five, and that's what she told me.

But it also looks quite a bit like grated coconut, what with it being grated coconut, so possibly calling it a coconut cake would make more sense?

look in the windows of traditional London bakeries, ones that have been in families for years. You can still buy them all over London as I checked with my mother and asked her to bring some up for Darwin's birthday.

They probably aren't stocked in hipster artisanal pop-up bakeries, mind.

Nope. I'd totally smash it though.

I don't know what that means? I assume you don't mean you'd punch it? They're very crumbly. The bits always stick to your coat. Impossible to hide from your grandmother that you and Grandad went to the bakery on the way back from the park and THAT'S what spoiled your appetite.

Yeah, that's because you're not real Londoners. I was born in Queen Charlotte's, along with Harry Potter, Dr Who and the Queen (Helen Mirren). I bet they all know what a cheesecake is.

They're actually really nice. You can get them with marshmallow on instead of coconut, if you're coconut shy. Hahahaha.
