There are so many cheap puns flying through my head but out of respect I shall restrain myself

Bad do!

A tree is the worst thing you can crash into. If it's rooted deeply, it will not budge.

The area is prone to flooding, and it was raining none stop last night. I'm guessing he aquaplanned it, lost control and hit the tree. But that is just a guess :(

Very sad news and a waste of lives. A lad I knew (was a couple of years older than me) died a few months back in similar circumstances - it's very difficult to get your head around.

The Father of 2 girls, yesterday. :(

Both girls were in classes that my kids are in. It's really upset my youngest son. And I'm really quite shocked myself, despite not really knowing him that well.

:(

Both very sad.

When I was in the USA there were constant deaths from people hitting 'poles' as they called them. (large upright power line telegraph pole type things).

Usually it wasn't through the impact. Death was caused when it snapped and the top half came in through the windscreen.

Certainly not a way I would like to go tbh.

You could usually tell when it had happened too because it was always followed by a powercut, or, if you were within a mile or so a really large flash of light from the cable snapping.

Usual cause was swerving to miss a deer. bad stuff tbh :(

I know this sounds awful but at least they both went together.

That's awful, I can't begin to imagine what happened to him.

Shit! You gotta wonder how this happens. I remember a story a few years ago about 2 guys being baked alive in an industrial oven as they were told to get in by their manager while it was still on. I think things like this are a pretty good counter arguement for the "H&S gone mad" crew.

I'm not entirely convinced you need H&S legislation to tell you that it's a bad idea to get into a working industrial oven.

My Great Grandad died when he fell into a machine that stamped out buckles from sheet metal.

Wel, yes and no, there is a slight amount of 'Darwinism' at play there, but it shouldn't have been possible for them to do so.

I'm pretty sure Health & Safety should cover the potential for accidents, not your boss telling you step into an oven and you listening to him. That's just daft on both parts.

:(

Problem is, a lot of these accidents happen not because of inadequate H&S, but because anyone, especially in a repetitive job, can get bored and tired and do things that seem amazingly stupid just because they've let their mind wander for a few seconds.

So having over-cautious amounts of protective guard rail and stop buttons can help with that, but then that can lull people into a false sense of security.. etc

As I said, yes and no. They were clearly stupid for going in, but the company was clearly at fault for allowing it. A correct H&S procedure including PTW would have stopped this from occurring.
