27. Fallout 4: The Mechanist DLC: I wasn't really expecting much from this but really enjoyed it, albeit mostly as a nice reason to dip back into Fallout 4 again for a few hours. The new enemies are quite fun to fight (pro-tip: some of the robots explode when you kill them and they absolutely will blow your ass to shit if you're standing near them at the time!) and I actually really enjoyed the larger dungeon the DLC brings with it. It's still the usual Fallout 4 shooty-fetch-quest nonsense but fun for a few hours. Aside from upgrading the shit out of the new companion you get I did very little with the robot crafting stuff as I don't really care. Though it does mean the new companion is hard as nails; we walked face first into a Deathclaw at one point and I back-peddled away round a corner furiously dropping bottle cap mines while my companion waded straight in. After bravely waiting a few minutes and hearing no tinkly explosions I found her standing on the corpse of the thing like, "What?"

1. Fallout 4

The good.
The crafting adds an awesome, uber-nerd angle, which I am all over. The general design of the game is top notch - the ambience, music, scenery, it's all spectacular. The first time I experienced a radstorm, I was blown away.

The bad
The main quest was rubbish, and dialogue continues to be a sticking point. As much as Fallout is about "hunt and fetch" type quests, the payload was always some juicy tidbit of character development, which I'm not getting in F4.

The companions are preachy AF, can't even be sarcastic without someone tutting quietly in the corner about it. They just don't hold a candle to the companions from NV, like Boon, Cass, Lily, and even Veronica (who actually endeared me to the BOS).

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
Cait is fairly aligned to me as a violent Irish drunk, but I read that post-rehab she judges your chem use like a straight-edge vegan, and WHY WOULD YOU RUIN THE ONLY GOOD COMPANION?

Also, four unarmed weapons. Four >:(

2. Fallout Shelter

Technically an infinitely playable game, I feel I've reached the peak with 200 dwellers and max upgrades on everything. Have nearly collected all the different items too, so unsure where to go without doing loads of in-app purchases just to get the special dwellers I'm missing.

?. Minecraft (PS4)

Keep rage quitting after repeatedly losing hauls of diamonds. Send help.

I dunno, I'm torn between Piper and Curie. Curie annoyed me at first but now I think she's cute as all hell.

Turned out there were 19 bosses. So I skull fucked the lot! Boomshakalacka. That last boss (but not the secret last boss) was a reet cunt to hit and I just got insanely lucky. I'm going to upload the 15 minutes of me fighting the shit because it's a travesty. I'm amazed I didn't smash something.

Anyway, up until the game was pretty bloody great. If you've got the patience and the balls then you'll probably enjoy the challenge. If you don't, you won't. Natch.

15 minutes of the last boss before ending with a spawny kill. If you can sit through the entire 15 minutes without getting upset then this game might be up your alley.

I think Curie is cute too. Piper drives me nuts, she really doesn't like it when I murder people.

What a terrible subtitle and a terrible game. It lacks the polish of the CoD games and you can see why the franchise died a death with the godawful Frostbite 2 engine running the show. What a buggy pile of bollocks with Battlefield style shooting which feels light and fluffy. The times I got a clear shot on something but somehow clipped the furniture. Just the worst kind of duck shoot with very few redeeming features (mind you, the vehicle sections were lengthy and reasonably well done) and a campaign that was uninteresting from start to finish. Modern Warfare done wrong.

If you think it's too easy, have a go at the Void mode that gets unlocked when your finish it, it's hilariously and stupidly hard.

I noticed the unlocked void mode and then turned it off and deleted it. If they wanted to provide a challenge to people who aren't fucking thickos they should have provided different difficulty levels from the outset. If anyone has played through the campaign once I doubt they'll have the patience to boot it up again.

The epitome of a walking simulator, I suppose. The first time I tried it I walked around a house for a bit, opening drawers, reading random crap, thinking why the fuck did this game get so much attention. But, tonight I decided to give it another go, and after another half an hour of drawer opening and house-walk-abouting, the story story suddenly got going, and before you knew it it was 3 AM and I just had to keep going to see it through to the end. Dunno, there is just something authentic about the whole thing that is very gripping, for instance, some music tapes you find that sound just exactly the way they should, and some very good narration.

Pro tips for playing this game: Do it at night. Turn off the lights. A glass of rum doesn't hurt. And maybe a bag of crisps. It's probably not the only way to do it, but it worked well enough for me.

Oh, and here goes my sleeping pattern. Again.

Another thing: It is not much longer than a film, keep that in mind if you're thinking of buying it. The current asking price of 20 euro is too much, IMO. I hope I didn't pay that much.

Fun little thing, and the procedurally generated music is impressive, but people have used some rather big words like "elating" to describe the experience, and I can't say it did anything like that for me.

Edit: I see that the regular price for this is 10 euro on Steam. Not even close to worth that sort of money. I hope I paid less than that.

29. Republique: Episode 5: The same deal as all the previous episodes but with some new extra bullshit added in the shape of cameras that kick you our after a very short time and have a cool down before you can take control of them again. In a game where they're your only way of seeing the level and directing your character this means in some places you're left literally with no way to progress while a timer ticks down. Or, more likely, your character gets captured while you look at an empty room somewhere else unable to do a fucking thing about it. It's a terrible idea in a game like this but in reality it only caused a problem in a single section which I had to repeat about ten times due the layout, wandering guards and number of these cameras they'd stuck in the area. The actual ending of the game is a weird rush of background and plot delivered through a lengthy section of completely unexplained nonsense capped off with a choice of endings that are all equally undesirable. I tried to go back and replay the final section to choose some of the alternatives but the save point they've bafflingly chosen would mean working through the same twenty minutes of denoument all over again which is even more unappealing the second time. It's not even just a case of setting the phone down and letting it play out; you actually need to interact with loads of stuff but the 'gameplay' in that section is just boring and annoying. So, yeah, fuck that noise.

1) "I AM THE GODDAMN BATMAN!"
2) WHIZZARD PEW PEW
3) "How do I make them have sex?"

AKA Until Dawn. I didn't expect it to be anywhere near as good as it is - you can recognise "Save the Cheerleader, save the world" and Mr Roboto really easily, and all of the acting is pretty good. The facial capture is superb, apart from the teeth, which I assume is just mapped in. The lip synching can be a bit hit or miss too, but why am I still talking about things like that? It starts off as a relationship sim (for about 20 minutes) and then becomes a Saw thing and then it gets all The Shining and then becomes a slasher movie and then it becomes all Aliens. And then I get nearly everybody killed.

AKA Salt & Sanctuary. It's Dark Souls in a Castlevania world, and it's really, really good. I got to be a chef with a giant sword and fuck everyone up, and I'm pretty happy with that.

AKA Broforce. I actually completed this with the Grimlet a couple of weeks back. Funny, tonnes of fun, occasionally let down by a crappy Bro (most close combat Bros were rubbish, with the exception of The Brode, Mr Anderbro and Brade). But it's funny, and it gives you a legit opportunity to shout "GET TO DE CHOPPAH" a lot.

I'm on target for my twelve completed games this year!

6) Ball-shooting simulator

AKA Sniper Elite III. I've loved Sniper Elite since the first one eleven years ago. I wind the killcam regularity up to maximum, turn the enemy difficulty down to "idiot" and the sniping up to "realistic", and merrily cap fools in the face. It's not perfect, and I can see how people might think it's a bit samey, but put Mr Growly-voice on a high ridge, spawn a load of cannon fodder in front of me and I'll shoot foreigners in the balls for days. There's very little more satisfying than finding a target 300m away, going up two "clicks" on your scope to adjust for gravity, glancing at your wind meter and giving it two feet to the right to compensate before pulling the trigger and nailing him through the eyeball.

You can play co-op, but then (I assume) you don't get the slo-motion x-ray killcam, so I'm not as interested.

I see the Zombie Army Trilogy is out for the PS4 - that'll probably happen.

The fact that it looks beautiful and was genuinely funny with engaging characters didn't hurt it any. Good stuff.

23) Medal of Honour: Warfighter (PS3)
24) Nihilumbra (PS Vita)

25) Beyond Good & Evil (PS3)

It's a pretty good effort at providing a Zelda experience that isn't Zelda. Good characterisation and some memorable characters, nice enough graphics for the time and some solid voice acting. I think it was the pacing and the structure of the plot that I liked most of all; you're told from the outset that you have you will have to visit 4 dungeonsplaces to finish the game and then it leaves you alone with only mild prompting to push you in the right direction. You quickly realise that the ship parts in the garage which require increasing amount of pearls (a secondary and more elusive currency) will be needed to access each area and the game does a good job of giving you just enough to buy that next part or leave you short to finish a couple of side quests or hunting out pearls in other areas of the map.

I just generally liked the whole experience. I was surprised for a Gamecube game how big the maps were and how open the world could be. You initially access a dingy to navigate around, which is fine, but when you get a spaceship suddenly you're flying over the map and finding loads of secret areas. It just looked and felt great.

The only downside to the entire game was the fucking camera. Honest to god, in tight areas you'll want to throw in the towel as you battle that fucking camera just so you can look in the right direction. And it wasn't even the lack of a proper fully functioning invert either (I didn't bother with invert and just had to customise myself to spack hands), during some stealth sections the camera will wrestle you for control. If you want to peak over objects, suddenly "down" moves the camera up a set amount to simulate peaking. Sometimes it's there and sometimes it isn't. It can't make its fucking mind up. One minutes you're trying to tilt the camera upwards to look up by pressing "up" and the camera interprets that as "oh, so you want to look at the floor do you? Here you go. Look at Jade's shoes for a minutes." There's other areas where the game takes control of the camera for a section and zooms out or points at a particular angle Resi 1 style. So you might enter a room and get Resi 1, free control or spazzy controls seemingly at random. Or when you're driving your dingy near the end in some tight corridors and the camera just fucking flakes out and only shows you the side of the dingy and no matter what you do you won't wrestle control back until you leave the area and come back in. Or when you're fighting a load of baddies in a room and can't see behind you and can't move the camera because you've stood too close to a wall that the game thinks you want Resi 1 camera directly above you for some ungodly reason.

So, yeah, the camera is a nightmare which marred an otherwise corking game.

Oh, and that last boss fight too. The boss, hnnngh, reverses your controls during a tightly times fighting sequence where you have to score, like, 10 consecutive hits in a row. Miss a hit due to the reversed controls and it's back to square 1. The fight can last ages as the score timer keeps resetting or you just die due to how unfair it is and revert to fighting the boss from the near start. Quick tip, spin the controller around for this bit. Worked for me.

So after all that do I want a Beyond Good & Evil 2? Sure, why not, I didn't realise this was a Ubisoft game for starters and was amazed that they had managed to make a really good Zelda clone (camera aside). And the ending set up a sequel anyway...which was great by the way as that credits roll is one of the longest credits roll I've ever sat through. To sit through the lot for no payoff would have annoyed me immensely but the bit at the end suddenly made it worth it.

26) TIMEframe (PC)

I'm not entirely sure whether I've played this before. You get 10 seconds of your life played out in slow motion (the world that is, not you, you move pretty quick) over 10 minutes. It's pretty shit but pretty.

It's free if you want to download it.

https://x70x.itch.io/timeframe-original-prototype

27) I Am Alive (PS3)

I don't think I've played and enjoyed a game in recent times that is so massively flawed, has terrible execution, is so utterly frustrating and looks rough as shit. Oh, and the story is the worse kind of bullshit too -

"Hey, stranger, I've just met you so can you go and get me some medical supplies?"
"Sure strange man, it wasn't like I was looking for my family or nothing. I could use something to do. Oh hang on, I did have a family I was looking f..."
"Look, are you going to get those supplies or not."
"Ok."
"Cool, they are dangling from a crane in a box on the very top of a destroyed skyscraper. You like climbing, right?"
"Do I!"

Anyway, think The Last of Us before TLOU came out and shitter. The grizzled main character is slightly less grizzled and there's a female child companion but more whiny. The world is quite good though, there's some unknown disaster that's fucked up the place good and proper. Everything is fucked and falling over and there's dust everywhere,; so much so that near the ground there are dense pockets that will kill you if you stay in them too long. The world is grey and there is no colour whatsoever in the entire game. It's not quite black and white but it might as well be. The dust fog is so think that you cannot see 5 foot in front of you and looking at anything in the distance is next to impossible through the thick dust haze everywhere. I liked everything about this world and the dust everywhere proper good shit but also it's a bit shit because the game is on a budget and last-gen so the effect isn't fantastic and requires a little imagination. Y'know, that thing in your head before 60FPS was a thing.

The game is split into 3 main parts: climbing up shit and across shit; fucking people's shit up and map navigation around a slightly open world-ish area.

The climbing is weak with fiddly controls; there's a stamina bar that is fussy and requires management and maintenance, and worse of all the stamina bar is tided to music that activates when you climb anything, or run, or do a particularly big poo. The music is supposed to build tension - since if you run out of stamina you will fall off stuff and die - but the music just ends up being ridiculous as it starts up as you just run down a street or jump up one level - things that don't need tension. Had they just put the music near the end of the stamina bar it would have been fine but it's just daft. Anyway, the climbing is ok. Just ok but some sections are fucking irritating but then again they do a terrific job of maintaining the tension because you only get 3 restarts/deaths/lives before you have to go back to the start of the chapter. Bit harsh but sure does build tension better than that fucking music cause you don't want to play an entire chapter all over again.

The combat is awesome though. You die quickly and you don't want to use up a restart so you're worried about every encounter. The maximum amount of bullets I ever had at any one time was 4. Four bullets, and by then I was encountering people 4 or 5 at a time. We're not talking Resi 1 stingy amount of bullets, we're talking early Manhunt levels when you first get the gun and can't ever find anymore bullets. The combat has so much in common with Manhunt or Condemned but it has its own thing. How to describe it...

You can have an empty gun and still point it in faces. And if their weapon isn't also a big fucking gun then they might get scared of your gun so you can threaten them and get them to lay down their arms or tell them to back up so you can get them near edges of holes and then boot them off. But if you've got two people with knives then you want to keep an eye on both of them so you have to keep them both in view. Kicking one into a hole might make the other worry you'll kill him so he might lay down his arms but take too long and they'll think you're bullshitting and bumrush you. Or you've got three folks and one has a gun and you've got one bullet. The guy with the gun ain't gonna take your shit so you'll have to kill him first and that might be enough to persuade the others to get down on the floor but let one get behind you and he'll have a go. So add varying amount of ammo, people with guns and knives, your desire and need to save bullets for when you actually need them and you've got a receipt for some fucking awesome conflicts. It's such an interesting but flawed system but leads to some glorious dynamic events as you try and bullshit your way past goons with only an empty pistol or shoot it out with a room filled with machete wielding nutters.

It's rock solid for a game that only lasts 5 hours but left a decent impression on me. And, fuck me, it's a Ubisoft game again! I didn't realise they had any good ideas only a few years ago but, hey, they did. Still, churning out the same bollocks now though, aye?

31. Tulpa: a puzzle game that sees you manipulating stuff with the mouse in order to allow your characters to progress through their increasingly surreal surroundings. The art style is fantastic--understated, clean and absolutely beautiful--and someone needs to get the visual designer onto a proper game stat. There's also a lovely atmosphere to the thing with subtle and slightly unsettling sound throughout. Sadly the game itself doesn't live up to any of that promise and it comes down to clicking around to work out what aspects of the scenery you can manipulate then just bashing away at stuff until you hit the right combination. Some of the scenes do give proper visual cues as to their solution and those are pretty satisfying but enough of them are just trial and error to drag the experience down. It's so short to get through (100 minutes playtime on the clock for me) that it's almost worth recommending just for the look of the thing but it's definitely not worth the £8 they're currently charging for it. Oh, and the control mapping is bafflingly awful given how few keys are actually required.

32. Cube Escape: Theatre: the latest instalment in the bizarre and slightly macabre 'Rusty Lake' series of escape/point & click games. I enjoyed this one possible more than any of the others because the puzzles were so logical and satisfying to solve; though that did mean it was a bit easier than some of the previous games and over quicker than I was expecting.

33. Toby: The Secret Mine: a puzzle platformer for Android (and iOS/Steam) which even by the standard of such things massively rips off Limbo to a ridiculous degree. It's got a more varied colour palette but that's really the only difference in terms of visual design. Of course that does mean it is nice to look at and it's an engaging enough time killer when commuting, though it definitely doesn't take inspiration from Limbo's level of challenge and you can breeze through almost all of it without stopping.

Tsh, double dash is only complete once you've unlocked the (completely shit and not worth unlocking) gold car.

34. Kintsukuroi: a puzzle game of sorts for Android that has you rotating a broken object and it's pieces in order to put it back together again. A nice idea but there are only 20 levels and none of them provide much of a challenge despite the fact that sometimes pieces just won't seem to 'click' into place until you've got some of the surrounding pieces done and the game only lets you pick from three of the available pieces at a time.

35. The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn: ugh, I just wrote a thing up about this and why I played it and Firefox fucking ate it. To sum up: with my CFS kicking my ass somewhat at the moment I wanted something easy but engaging to play through so picked this up after playing it for the same reason when I was really pretty sick a few years back. It is very easy but it's good fun, varied and well put together. Listening to Captain Haddock insult people never really gets old either. Perfect stuff if anyone's looking to introduce a kid to modern gaming without overwhelming them, though the sword-fighting stuff could be frustrating as it's not explained very well. It's also the first game I've pirated in about ten years because it's not available on Steam and I was hardly going to wait for a physical disc to be delivered like some kind of caveman. Bashi-bazouk/10.

It's a brilliant version of the arcade game Double Dragon, but on the GBA. It's got new enemies, new moves and new levels. I enjoyed every second!

Is it as good as Double Dragon Neon, though? I bet it's not.

Me neither. I really tried to like it, but it just bored me. I don't know much about Double Dragon in general, though, all the version I've tried (apart from Neon) were horrible 8 bit conversions.

You should try the advance version. It is good, but if you want to try something different... find out Battletoads and Double Dragon. I think the SNES version would be best but it's great on the Gameboy.

Oh I finished some games...

1) Just Cause 3

Excellent, more of the same but with added wingsuit (later upgraded to rocket wingsuit, weeeeeeeeeeee). The map seemed smaller than 2 but that just have been that the wingsuit allows you to travel faster.

2) Destiny: The Taken King

I have finished all the missions and hit the level cap so I'm claiming this one (it seems to be all grind to max your kit out in the end game). I only picked this up because it was cheap in the Supermarket but I have to say I really enjoy it, the shooty pew, pew stuff is really well handled and is something you can dive into for half and hour and have fun with and then leave it alone (However I can see how the pricing of the DLC, the length of the original campaign and the lack of in game player comms and matchmaking pissed people off who originally bought it).

I bought Destiny when it first came out but I was looking to get it again on the Xbox One, but I haven't got a clue which version is the best version to get... so yeah, I agree with that.

  3. Metro 2033 Redux (PC)
  4. Grand Theft Auto IV (Xbox 360)
  5. Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence (PlayStation 2)
  6. StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty (PC)
  7. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (PS3)
  8. Shenmue II (Dreamcast)
  9. Enslaved: Odyssey to the West (PC)
  10. Alan Wake: The Signal (Xbox 360)
  11. Battle Squadron (Amiga 500)
  12. Luigi's Mansion 2 (Nintendo 3DS)
  13. Gone Home (PC)
  14. Proteus (PC)
  15. Dead Rising 2 (Xbox 360)

Very similar to the first game, but slightly funnier, slightly prettier, and just slightly betterer in all ways.

Got through all the case files and got Ending A, so I will count it now, even though there is a bonus overtime section and probably a better ending, which I will be attempting before taking on Case West.
