Hi, in the process of moving out, i'm in need of a new tv. Since i only use a wii and a dvd player besides regular tv, what is the best lcd brand for upscaling the picture?. Most ones i see on store's displays look awful. I've got Samsung, Sharp, LG and Philips on my mind (sony is much more expensive), i wonder how do they compare to each other.

Not quite the same because you are concentrating on upscaling. I know from reading reviews that all the Toshiba LCD TVs are highly commended for this, and my own Tosh 32" 32C3035DB is certainly very good -- the Freeview in particular is almost supernaturally sharp, noticeably better picture quality than standard def content coming from my Sky HD box.

I believe that Samsungs, whilst highly regarded in general (and the choice of many in this forum) aren't as well regarded for standard def content.

Sony KDLnnW4000 series. Or V if that's too much. All TVs look bad in stores, so don't base anything on what you see there, except if it's things like you don't like the design.

Toshiba's aren't very common in this country when it comes to tv's, but i found these:

http://www.pixmania.com/pt/pt/831825/ar ... 32av5.html (which is only available on 19th september)

and

http://www.pixmania.com/pt/pt/831821/ar ... 37av5.html (37'' seems to big for my living room though)

i suppose that in a certain brand there aren't many differences in quality besides the obvious specs like contrast and such, right?

It could be both.

Personally if I was spending money it'd be a Samsung. I wasn't and my insaneo cheap HannSPREE is a thousand times better than any other budget one I've seen.

I like LG computer monitors but I don't know about their TVs, the one Tosh I've encountered was very nice indeed.

A little from column A and a little from column B.

My LG is excellent, and I've had no complaints whatsoever.

No, but my father continually reminds me that in Which? magazine, they always come out top in the testing.

Which should mean they're very good.

We have a Philips 26 inch PFL5322 which has 2 HDMI ports, a component, a couple of scarts and old school thingy. It does 1080 summat, but not 1080 summat else and was 280 quid from richer sounds,a lthought it is probably cheaper now. It doesn't have a digital tuner, but that's OK as we own one with a HDD in it, and I like it.

My Dave-o-vision Samsung telly finally blew its backlight driver, and given its generally increasing flakiness I've decided to just get a new one (although I might still repair it to have in another room).

Incredibly, I have a choice down to an LG and a Hanspree

This Hanspree:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hannspree-SE40L ... -1-catcorr

Its main failing seems to be lack of HD freeview tuner. Not bothered. But it's cheap, LED, energy A rated and supposedly has a decent picture.

Anyone (except Myp) want to offer any dire warnings, or good deals on an alternative?

A while ago, there were mentions on here (or wos) of barginous hanspree tvs on ebuyer,

I bought 2, quite quickly (one for the main room, and one for the games room) shortly after I moved (so between 4 and 5 years ago)

One of them is still going strong, but the other the sound stopped working, and sometimes the picture didn't work.

So, um 50/50 with me (the one that died, lasted about 3 years before it started showing a problem, which got worse and worse until the sound died completley 9 months later)

Yeah I bought one around then. 32inch for 300 quid? Was about 4 years ago when I bought mine, still works but there is some burn out.

One day in and it hasn't blown up yet!

Quite pleased with it in general - great picture, the on screen displays and remote are nice and easy to use, and it runs cool, only 80W.

One slight niggle is that the audio out on the headphone socket is a bit quiet, so I have to have the amp turned way up, so it goes "bang" if you turn the TV off before the amp. But it does have an "SPDIF" optical output which should solve that problem if I had something to plug it into.
I did notice it has an audio delay setting for each input, in case you have sync problems!

Hannspree, your TV making proper blows
If they were free I'd still say no.
Hannspree - electronic shart.

Hannspree, other TVs surround you
They point and laugh around you
Because you look a twat.

Hannspree, on eBay they try to flog you
But purchasers woe betide
Their features are fucking snide

Hannspree, if life is worth living
Get a TV you'll end up loving
Instead of this pile of shite.

It was only a few months short of its 6th birthday too. Rubbish.

I recommend two things : not hanspree. Secod hand goods off a Dave. They never break.

You've plugged your amp into the headphone socket?!

HDMI from the device (Xbox, Sky, etc) into the amp, then HDMI from the amp to the TV.
Failing that, optical from the device to the amp (unless your TV had the HDMI out thingy, which is pretty rare), HDMI from the device to the TV.
Failing that, optical from the TV (which has the device plugged into it) to the amp.

Hmm, I'm going component from the xbox into the TV. I think the new xbox does at least have an HDMI port though so that's easily fixed.

OK, thanks, I didn't know you go "through" an amp like that. Now tell me about surround sound, does the xbox make that?

Actually, I probably want to use the optical out for simplicity. RMD me an amp?

We've got a big amp rec-me-do with some good ones in it that should still be fairly relevant - I'll look it up.
