Today I was messing around with Darwin's little chair, and decided to remove the clips temporarily, as we do not yet use them and they are just a nuisance and seem to rather impede the comfort. The chair is called a 'Bumbo' and they are quite popular, so I guess that some others here may also have one at home.

Anyway, as I was removing the clips, which technically are not supposed to come off, I found an Ichthys

etched on the chair, hidden beneath the fitting where the clips was:

I thought it was a bit odd, so had a quick Google, and others have found the same on later models of the chairs.

I did think it odd to find it hidden away there. It is not part of the design, and according to the bit of information I could find on the net it just seems to reflect the religious beliefs of the company which have been described as 'very religious' but on what measure that is taken, who knows?

Though it does not bother me in the slightest, I do wonder how more religious people would feel if, for example, they discovered 'God does not exist, trust in science' or something similar etched into the underneath of their baby goods? I dare say that there would be a few rather upset people: maybe more so in the US and a number of other nations.

Of course, with our son being named Darwin, I could always add to it, anyway:



Would it stop me buying another? Certainly not (though the design of the clip might: it seems really awkwardly placed), but I genuinely do not think the same would be true if it were an atheist message found by many religious buyers.

I'm not entirely convinced that most non-believers would think that the best way to carry a message of reason over religion would choose to use a pentagram, all-seeing-eye or any other bizarre symbol of the illuminati, Myp. Or the Freemasons. Or any other secret society: the smurfs, Sh-sh-sh-shoe people...

The truth is out there.

If you don't want to think of it having a religious symbol, just convince yourself that you're sitting your son in a very, very early stage prototype of a chair instead.

I have said that we can use it as an excuse to return it to Mothercare citing religious intolerance once he outgrows the seat.

I tell you one thing: no intelligent design was present when they designed those harness clips.

We had a bumbo for our kids and I'm sure on the box it explained how a certain amount of the profits would benefit developing countries. I think it mentioned digging wells in Africa so yeah, I think they're just a religious company.

I don't quite follow your thinking. Unless you've missed something out of your post I don't see how digging wells or otherwise benefiting or donating to developing countries is religious or the result of being a religious company/individual/organisation?

I do think after reading that they are indeed a company with a religious background. What I don't quite understand is the idea of hiding religious symbols on the goods.

As far as I remember the ichthys was used as a symbol to basically spread knowledge that an area was 'safe' for Christians in areas where Christians were persecuted.

My son's bum is indiscriminately unsafe to all. It is as dangerous to all people, regardless of their religious beliefs.

Someone told my dad that the BT 'dancing piper' logo had a snake in there (it does look like one) and he was convinced it had some sort of meaning. He had been reading David Icke books, and some other 'OMG conspiracy' type books.

He was also convinced that the moon landings were faked. Mum insisted he bought those 'silly books' with cash and not bank card, so that his name didn't get put on the 'list of nutters'.

Mum was also so convinced about the dreaded Millennium Bug that she began stockpiling food supplies in preparation. What she didn't realise is that we had already eaten all the good stuff from there well before Y2K arrived.

Honestly though, my parents weren't really crazy as that is just a couple of isolated, charmingly a-bit-nutty, events from an otherwise normal and balanced life. I remember those things fondly.

I saw a packaged one in Tesco today. On the box it said that The charity funded by profits from low density foam products helps kids with various health bad lucks in Praetoria, South Africa.

Yeah, I knew that there was a charity link with the manufacturers. Not sure what relation that is to the religious insignia, though.
