I use OneDrive for my cloud storage, its nice and simple to share things in that recipients don't have to set up accounts or do much to see what I'm sharing.

I also take 99% of my pictures with an Iphone, the app for OneDrive just sends everything from my camera roll straight to the cloud.

Was just sharing some pictures this morning and noticed I have 60GB of data 90% of which is pictures!

Still have 30GB left for now

I use LiveDrive for backing everything up (about 10TB with them), Dropbox for photos and general shit (50GB with them, half of that is photos), and Google Drive for documents (some negligible amount).

I use DropBox for auto-backup of any photos or videos taken on my phone (10.7% of 30GB used) and Google Play Music for my mp3 collection (12,563 uploaded of a 50,000 allowance). Oh, and I've got my current CV in Google Docs.

That covers anything I'd be bothered about losing really. Any apps I've got on my PC are just pirate versions I could re-torrent and it's the same with video stuff. I'd be a bit annoyed to lose the GBs of video I've got on my hard drive but it's all just TV stuff that I'll delete as soon as I've finished watching it so it would only 'cost' me the time it would take to re-torrent it or find a streaming source. Years ago I used to be very precious about stuff on my hard drive but now there's no reason to keep movies and TV I've watched and I long ago stopped backing up comics I'd read. I practically never revisit any entertainment media I've consumed because there's a never ending stream of new stuff to get into and, on the few occasions I do fancy it, there's always a multitude of ways to get my hands on another copy.

That's a lot of what I would call valuable data! My pictures are from the last 12 years so I can't replace them. Also have documents and my email PST on Ondrive as well but that's it, double up the email with a windows back up as well

As Bamba said TV etc is not worth keeping as you can get it back via download, I currently have most of this on NAS with RAID, gone are the days where I can spend 2K on drives when I run out of space so I have more TV on single large drives hooked into the NAS via USB so it still shows up on the network. I tend to keep nice to have stuff, like a full set of the Simpsons in HD which is 1TB in size.

I'm also more ruthless is getting rid of stuff after we have watched it as its unlikely it will ever be viewed again

The price is the same whether I store 10GB or 10PB, so it doesn't make sense not to do it.

I have 30gb of Onedrive storage and that's the only one I really use on a daily basis. I have 11gb of Dropbox available but that's only really used for an automatic backup of my seldom taken ipad pictures.

I've also got 15gb on Google drive apparently but I never use that.

I probably should take advantage of all this space and backup some pictures.

Not a big fan of the cloud, I have nothing up there of any significance. Local drives/NAS/etc and a proper backup regime are my weapon of choice.

My current backup sets go back to 1999, so I could retrieve my Windows My Documents folder and Outlook Express archives from 1999, if I really wanted to.

Also I don't trust the cloud with my cock pics, and other such homemade sexy delights.

I do both. Backup to NAS then backup from there to the cloud internet backup services.

In the event of data breaches and large amounts of private data being spread all over the internet, I for one thank you for this.

Surely the point is that it's not just a computer but a whole load of computers possibly in different continents and blah de blah etc. let's just call it a cloud.

I don't think anyone thinks that it's not on computers somewhere.

It all worked fine when we called it "the Internet".

[edit] Oh wait, you're talking about Cloud Servers - that's not "The Cloud", which is a shitty buzzword to mean "online".

'A cloud' is kinda fine. 'The cloud' is what irritates. I've lost count of the number of times I've been asked questions like 'is it safe to store things in the cloud?' - like it's one homogenised offering or something that differs somehow from lots of individual companies saving stuff for you on their servers. It misleads people, in my mind.

If you're responding to the question "what's that up there?" then yes, yes it is.

I think it's a decent way of getting across the concept to non-technical folks, and it's easy enough to explain the realities of it from there.

A bit misleading yeah, but a simple way of explaining 'other people look after your files' as opposed to 'you look after your files and if your computer breaks and you're not backing things up properly you lose everything'.

"Online" did a perfectly good job of that, though. Now you get fucking questions about "the cloud" like it's a separate thing to the rest of the Internet.

It's not misleading, it's just entirely redundant, like deciding to suddenly call roads "movers".

Well yeah but it's got a nice marketing sound to it I suppose.

I'm not defending it particularly, but I don't find it monstrously egregious or anything either.

My in-laws asked me what the cloud was, explaining it to a 78 year old was fun.

You can have private clouds.. Which is a data centre, it has always been a data centre.

I despise the term cloud

We have a private cloud.

Prior to this, we called it Datacentre One, Datacentre Two, and Datacentre Three.

Private Cloud sounds better though, all zeitgeisty and stuff.

More likely a bit of a datacentre. Or a bit of several datacentres.

You're just welly jelly because you haven't got a Private Cloud.

Note the capitals to denote proper nouns.

I think I may just check Solarwinds now to confirm that the Private Cloud is operating within normal parameters.

Yup, one of the projects I worked on, wanted cloud access, but as they went under water made it tricky..

I thinks folks get confused between cloud and access on demand (applications and/or data). You can use your, PC / Phone / Tablet to get at your data, hence the term cloud works. I still hate it :)

Whooo, then I have some cloud! Big Flickry cloud.

I was about to ask, before reading Grim...'s reply, what then (if Flickr is Cloud) would separate that from any where that hosted the data of your content anywhere? So, Ravelry would be cloud, because it is one of the places I store my patterns for download, correct? But it's not thought of as cloud?

I thought that cloud storage was different as it was only accessible by the person who uploaded the data, unless it was shared via some access, and maybe anywhere that public access of the data was the norm was not.

So, why isn't the entire internet just cloud then?

Hey I get to answer something different to everyone else. Amazon Glacier. Costs peanuts, I wager it's a fuckton more durable than any commercial cloud storage, and is extraordinarily difficult to compromise.

Sure, I can't pull the data back instantly, but I'm not supposed to. This shit is cold storage, write-once, read-probably-never. There's very little I care about backing up anyway. Some pictures. Some older stuff I'm vaguely nostaligic about. The day to day stuff, meh, if I lost it all right now I'm not sure I'd even be arsed.

My web server gets cyclically backed up to S3, if you don't count AWS AMIs and hot images on top. I'm not losing anything there. S'the future.

That looks quite good. How do they do it so cheaply? I appreciate they've built in the 'several hours to get your stuff back' side of things, but at the end of the day they're still having to store it and mirror it, the same as any other provider.

With AWS, it's SCALE. They're getting enormous economy of scale by continuously expanding their infrastructure at a blistering rate, building on top of a very structured and reliable virtualisation system.
