Article on if its morally wrong to pay builders etc. cash in hand for jobs?

Do you do it? I tend to for some things if the job is under £1000, I take the view I pay enough tax as it is and don't see why I should pay 20% VAT.

Yes it is morally wrong but then again so is the fact Phillip Green could take 1Billion out of the UK to Monaco by saying his wife owns his company so I don't feel that guilty.

I also think at lot of the guys I use live month to month and prefer cash

When we replaced the boiler it cost £2400 as I wanted a good one that would work in the house when we extend it.

My plumber had to get his mother in law to buy it on her credit card and then I sent her the money

You wonder what sort of plumbing business doesn't have a few thousand of credit to hand, unless maybe it was just a cash flow thing for him at that time.

Nothing morally wrong with paying cash in hand. The builder not declaring it on his tax return is entirely different.

Yeah, I think there's a bit of a lack of understanding going on.

The tradesbloke said you can pay me £80 cash in hand, or £100 otherwise

Personally I save £20 and the liability is on him. Everyones happy.

Think its come up as Edd Balls said that people should get receipts from the Window Cleaner and other odd job men

All around missing taxes\evasion

It then transpires that the window cleaner at his Yorkshire home has never given him a receipt and he also has £2600 claimed in his expenses over the years for "unreceipted odd jobs"

Then Osborne is saying the HSBC tax evasion is not his job to prosecute, more likely he doesn't want to upset the people who will be giving him lucrative directorships once he is out of politics.

So the question of who you vote for is really which self-serving greedy hypnotic do I vote for or do I pick a right wing racist?

To clean your windows? They say that newspaper (and vinegar) gives a great streak-free shine, and I guess they are likely to have copies of the Daily Mail to hand. Get a receipt, though.

Jehovah's Witnesses make the best window cleaners as they make you see the light.
