That subtitle, cleverly made up in my brain for you, BeeX chums, sums this up precisely. It's Resident Evil 4.

Same rubbish story. Same running about. Same shooting. Same rubbish voice over.

It's facking marvellous.

Not least cause I love Resident Evil 4. And FACKING LOATHED Resident Evil 6; which is the most recent one I've played. There's no co-op and no multiplayer and I couldn't give a flying fuck. So whereas you do occassionally get followed about by a guy or gal - no one plays him or her; there's no waiting for anyone, no swapping things about with a pal and no screaming emo down your headset and up in your ear holes.

It takes about an hour to get going, mind. As soon as you get into this forest area where the unmentionable monster people it's gets Resi 4 good. But we don't want to play Resi 4 again do we? So it does some new stuff. First, the story: everything is probably happening in your head and none of this is real. Probably. It's kinda annoying though as I'd liked it to be more straight-laced since there's some messing about going back and forth between some hospital bed place where you save your game. There's some irritating other worldly stuff happening too. Shame, really, but I guess it's carving it's own thing. What else, oh yeah, I got distracted, there's the shooting really...

... It's spot on Resi 4. Cept this time the bullets and ammo are slightly more in tight supply. I occassionally found myself out of any of the ammo types I needed and it made it fucking difficult (and usually ended in death) (I've died a shot ton) (oh there's some proper gory death sequences too) (y'know, the cool kind before Resi got too scared of its own success and dropped them in Resi 5). And whereas you can go for headshots, these fuckers heads have a nasty habit of exploding in half or in thirds and you need to get rid of the whole head, so the tactic is to knock them to the floor and set alight with matches. It's actually a decent take on the usual shooter and if you're going to ape Resi 4 so much then you better switch it up to avoid a lawsuit. Didn't the guy who made this invent Resi though? Can't remember. Something like that though.

The bad points might prove insurmountable to some of the 1080p crowd though.

Number 1: the entire game is played in an envelope. I have no fucking idea why there's two huge black borders above and below. So you feel closer to the action? So you can't see your characters ugly feet? I have no idea. I said that though. If you can get by this you'll love it though.

Number 2: the camera is a bit shonky too. Well I reckon it is. Might be something to do with how it's place central to the screen whereas your character stands on the left. I dunno. Do I look like a programmer? Thenres something amiss though. You stop thinking about it after an hour though.

That first hour is very important, dontchaknow.

Number 3: Could've been on a PS3 and I wouldn't tell the difference. It's pretty but I couldn't tell it was a PS4 game.

Number 4: there's this cool level that's like that Resi 4 one where you're attacked by the villagers in that mountain pass. It was brill. Both this one and the Resi 4 one. And there's a cool level where your mate is opening a door and you're defending against these big fuckers and a killer nun. And there's a cool level when you meet the chainsaw guy. There's no negatives here. Shit is just cool.

Anyway, played 5 and a half hours and I'm loving it.

Oh I had some cool moments and was enjoying myself so much I forgot to hit share. Shame. The best I've got is this lot below which I've shared for two reasons:

1: There's some hilariously bad shooting where I miss 5 shots which is bad for a game where you're trying to make bullets count. One goes right between the fuckers legs. Yes, I died a shameful death.

2: Then I've kept the bit after as it demonstrates a very important part of any Resi game - breaking the pots to find stuff. I smash those pots up real fucking good. You're jealous; I can tell.

RE4 was brilliant because of the immaculate gameplay and brilliant set-pieces. The story was rubbish as in every other RE. It was very hard to maintain that high standard of game design without at least improving on the other areas, but unfortunately Konami didn't do anything in that front.

RE5 was passable and Revelations was dull. I haven't even tried 6.

Revelations - I enjoyed this - its very scripted / set piece but reminds me a lot of the early games and if you can find it cheap on steam I would say its worth playing

I've not really played the light gun games but they seemed to be okay , and i've not put enough time into any of the handheld ones to really include them.

I do have Evil Within and when i get a chance i'll give it a go - its gone up on my 'what to play next' list after this thread

The first lightgun game wasn't good. Enemies took way to many shots to go down, and bosses were awful: too hard and too grindy.

I have this too.

It's way down the xmas backlog though. Alien is going on first for my current 'scary game'. And mostly playing at night. mostly. means it will be a while. Looking forward to it though.

10 hours in and it's still going. Nice. It's gone a bit more linear as its gone on - just like Resi did - and it's had some good levels too. When you say "oh fucks sake" out loud (in a good way, not a "I'm sick of this shit way") when you've killed one giant guy with a plank with a nail in it and a hook on a chain and then you wander about and suddenly get two of the fuckers, then you know you're having fun.

There's some decent set pieces too: Hairy hair girl chasing you about; box head chasing you about; ghostly ghost face chasing you about; fighting a savage dog until you manage to get away then your mate says "I've dropped my glasses" and you have to go back in... oh, it's all good.

There's 'something' stopping it being Resident Evil of this generation but it's a fucking good blast. Great fun so far.

Aces - it's gone all 'Second disc of Resi 4'! Gangs of arseholes trying to murder me and they've found assault rifles. Nice. Also: bastards.

Not content taking my word for it?

Feast your eyes on a bit of the later levels. I don't think there's much given away at all; it was just a nice shooting section with lots of skull fragments and brain matter exploding everywhere.

Looks decent, right?

I've been weighing this up, as I think £20 is still a bit steep for a single player game if it doesn't last long (The Last of Us was worth £40 and that campaign was massive), but ten hours is a decent run-time in my eyes.

Actual fact: I clocked Resi 4 on my first run-through in 21 hours. I got it down to 8 hours with fat up guns.

If The Evil Within lasts another few hours I reckon £20 is an alright price if you fancy playing something like this right now.

Am I misremembering or did Resi 4 have a level on a train where you fought off some monster peeling the roof off? Or was that Resi: Nemesis? Was that any Resi or a Resi knock off?

Anyway, there ain't a bit on a train in this.

Oh, and it's pretty cool. Especially when some tit goes - "why don't we stop so you can go over there and grab something and then come back". It looks quiet enough.

Next thing y'know, I'm ducking .50 cal bullets.

This is like the perfect Christmas game. If it were still Christmas. And you were off work. Or didn't work when you did.

To be fair I played it for 30 mins on PS3, then got a PS4 and didn't go back to it. I was really looking forward to it, but it was quite disappointing.

Yeah, like I said above, after the first hour it gets good. Once you're free from the cleaver guy (shouldn't take too long but you might die a bit) it opens up and you can start popping skulls and enjoying yourself.

I've enjoyed it much, much more than, say, Alien: Isolation.

12 hours 28 minutes in and it's still going. Must be nearing the end now.

It really dropped the pace down for chapter 13 as well; which was nice after the shooting of the last couple of chapters. I've read somewhere that the pacing is off but it's really only that first hour. It's been gold since.

Who do they get to do this rubbish voice acting though? The main guy is like evey gruff Resi protagonist ever voiced. He also sounds like Snake.

And how many people say "Huh?" Out loud, to themselves, every time they see something? Everyone, that's who.

The fridge light must be a constant source of worry for these people.

You missed Resident Evil Zero. A friend of mine loves the series but said this was the worst one (This was before 6 came out though)

I remember it being ok - well, typical fixed camera Resi but with some tarted up graphics. I can only really remember the train journey and some of the mansion though. Stupid Resi story had become stupid Resi story by that time though.

I'd suggest the order of Resi's as:

4>2>3>5>1>0>V>6

Both light gun chronicles were pretty great actually. I never played the Outbreak (outbreak? Whatever it was called) ones.

It had QTE when QTE was new , it has some *bad* QTE (the whole first Krauser fight) but I can forgive it those small issues because the game itself is so good.

Finished!

The end boss bit was typically bonkers for a story about mind control stuff but I actually enjoyed the ending. Plus it left it open for a sequel which, frankly, it deserves.

Facking brill from an hour after the start until the finish.

If this ain't worth 8/10 I don't know what is. It's a really reasonable Resi romp. I enjoyed it loads.

Loads of stuff could be sorted out to make it better and let's hope next time Shinji Whathisface does exactly that cause this could be the new Resi that we enjoy waiting for. Cause, y'know, Resi is shit now.

Let's see what we've won:

1) Clear time 14:33:26
2) Number of Deaths: 92
3) Unlocked machine gun and RPG the latter of which weren't in the game.
4) oh and this is really special ... Yes, the model viewer is back. Again. But with no comic sound effect noises. :(

I picked this up at the weekend on the basis of the contents of this thread (well that and I traded in a load of old games at CEX and the xbone selection was a bit sparse)

Should I play this or Alien Isolation first for the scares?

Spent more time on it tonight, it's good but there were some curse inducing instadeaths that grated. Turning it off now I've made progress and before I'm too pissed off. It comes across as RE4 doing an impression of Silent Hill to me, it's hard for survival horrors not to be compared to the two I guess though.
