It's by Double Helix Games, makes of such fine wares as:

  • Silent Hill Homecoming
  • G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra
  • Front Mission Evolved
  • MX vs. ATV Reflex
  • Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters
  • Battleship

It's also the firm doing the f2p Killer Instinct for the Xbox One.

Oh.

I was never a fan of the original Strider even though everyone else seemed to be.

I would have thought that a new Strider game would be perfect for the 3DS but still.. what do I know?

Strider always looked cool but wasn't necessarily that amazing a game if you ask me.

I found the keyboard and mouse combination strange, but enjoyed the shooty action and stamping on the foot soldiers.

I was never a huge fan of the original as I remember it looked nice of the Amiga but played like a bitch as it was a bit spongy and had ropey collision detection as the slash from the blade was a massive white arc.

Mind you, this trailer looked very very nice. Well, the 2D bits anyway; the 3D bits looked less good. Strider might just be the type of game that would benefit from being revamped as a Metroidvania style romp. If they can get the basics right and make the jumping about and slashing stuff loads of fun it might work. If it turns into a left to right scroller with endless slashy then it'll be a turgid flop like all those all left to right slashys. No, slashies. No, hang on, slashy's.

Me, actually.

If you left the game on the title screen it would run through a demo, and then come back to the title screen and play a really good industrial theme song, which I'm imagining hardly anyone heard.

[edit]Aha!

Aye, Double Helix have a fuck-awful track record, but the gameplay trailer shows some promising stuff. The player does absorb a worrying amount of bullets, though, and extra health seems to piss out of everything he touches. Hopefully you can deflect most of the projectiles, and the guy is just playing like shite, because I hate games in which taking hits is essentially inevitable (i.e. assumed to be by the game itself), and lazily worked around with shields and health pick-ups, etc.

Maybe they'll have worked everything out by 2014...

That's exactly what struck me when watching it; pitting a player with a melee weapon against enemies with guns is inherently unbalanced and requires some clever game mechanics to restore that balance. But, as you say, they just seem to have done it by letting you constantly top up rather than give you some proper defences against the barrage. It looks from that like you just charge around spamming the sword button and hope for the best. It's very faithful the the original but I'm not sure it looks like a game that would actually be fun in the long term.

I've totally changed my mind about this. I played for twenty minutes, didn't like it, left it for two months or longer, went back this afternoon, played it, it instantly clicked, couldn't stop playing it. It's real good.

Don't read my words, watch me jump about a bit swinging a sword and generally being a bit of a shit to robo guys.

And that was a quiet section. I trimmed it down a bit as I was dying a lot and I need to maintain this machismo of being great at games.

Y'remember all those things people were saying about just diving in and chopping people absorbing loads of bullets and killing folk for energy? It's all true. You dive in. You absorb loads of bullets. You chop people up. You get energy. AND IT'S ALL FUCKING BRILL.

The catch of course is if you don't dive in and chop people up you die real freaking quick. It forces you to charge everything and everyone and chop them to pieces all the while dancing about like a spaz swinging at nothing and everything at the same time.

The bosses start off easy enough and you soon realise that they're just old skool bosses with attack patterns and ways of defeating each one in turn. It's all good.

It's not the best game I've ever played but it's bloody good fun nonetheless and reminds me why I like playing games.

Strider: finished.

"Time to complete" it says "3 hours 57 minutes" Fuck. Off. I've been playing it way longer than that.

It's bloody ace this. Absolutely brill. Why? Cause it's Old Skool, man. Totally Old School. I mean, Skool. You don't get many of these games about these days and that is deeply disappointing. This is ace. This is brill. This is choppy-choppy-slash-slashtastic. Why didn't anyone tell me how good this way, aye? Twitter? Nah, no one reads that shit. Anyhoo, Strider is it just like that game from Epic whose name I ALWAYS forget that everyone always says was the best thing since sliced bread (Metrovania stylee shooty game). Well it is, except you don't have a gun you have a kick ass sword to slice people's faces clean off. Yes, you upgrade it, yes, the upgrades are ice, fire, red and Um purple. Ummm purple. Oh and you can do cool stuff like climb along the ceiling. Could you do that it that game from Epic whose name I always forget? No. Probably. Did he do jumpy cartwheels? Did he fuck. Did he climb up a massive dam? Did he fuck. No, hang on, I think he did. Maybe. There was a damn somewhere. And did he upgrade his stuff and unlock previously inaccessible areas? Yes. Yes he did. And so does this guy. Hey, it's a good way to structure a game init. Mind you, I don't think that game from Epic whose name I always forget had any loading times but it's been so long I can't remember. LIKE NAME OF THE NAME THAT... and so on.

The bosses weren't as good as this game though. FACT. Not cause the bosses in that game weren't good looking; cause they look better than those in Strider, but Striders bosses are proper bosses. Patterns. Patterns, patterns and patterns. And if my autocorrect is to be believed "patterns" oh it's not doing it anymore. Fucking autocorrect et. LOOK it did it. A random et in the middle of nowhere. Oh bosses? Yeah, attack patterns, learn them and win. Don't learn them and die.

It's real good. Strider. A game that you thought was shit, played it for a bit and thought it was shot and then played it for a bit longer and loved it.

LOOK fucking thing did it again. I put shit and then it randomly does shot. Fuck my phone.

But not Strider. It's fab.

If so, that's one of my favorite games ever, and would totally sell Strider to me.

Played this for an hour or so and it is fucking great.

Fast and Slashy. Kinda like what a sonic should be.

Only played the master system version to the gorilla, so not sure how well it compares.
