I've not played any of the previous games - does it matter?
There is a really long intro post on Neogaf which covers the background
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread. ... dragon+ageIn the FAQ section
Quote:
Q: Do I need to have played Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age 2 to understand what's going on?
A: Well, yes and no. There will be returning characters and subplots from the first two games in Inquisition that
you won't recognize and you may completely miss the purpose or intent of some side-stories by not experiencing what
happened in the first two games.
Actually the whole FAQ section in there is probably worth a look

Q: Is there anywhere I can catch up on the Dragon Age world before starting the game?
A: If you're not up for playing DAO and DA2, feel free to check out Ralemont's Dragon Age lore thread or
Kotaku's A Beginner's Guide to Dragon Age. If those prove too long of a read, you could read up on some
wiki summaries of DA:O and DA2 and be relatively caught up to speed on the situation in Dragon Age: Inquisition.
IGN has a nicely done 5 minute video recap of the series.
Q: How long is this?
A: Bioware has stated the that it can take up to 50 hours to complete the main narrative campaign while ignoring
most everything else. Throw in exploration, sidequests, etc and you can see double the amount of time. Reviewers
have said to have played 90+ hours in some cases while still having much left to do in the game.
Q: Is this open world?
A: Not really. It's not open world in the sense of similarity to Skyrim. There are instead multiple open world
regions separated by loading. Each region is said to be massive however, with some being larger than the entire
play-space of Dragon Age Origins.
Q: Is this a strategy RPG? Can I play it in real-time like an action game?
A: You certainly can if that's what you want. Players can play the game like any real-time action-RPG. You also
have the option of pausing the gameplay, strategizing and issuing commands to your party and then watch the action unfold.
Q: I want to import my saves into the game, how do I do that!?
A: You don't. Given that Inquisition is on a completely different engine as well as being across two different
generations of consoles, save importing would've been a complex task to accomplish.
Q: Sooo what do I do?
A: BioWare has developed the "Dragon Age Keep", which you can find here. This is a browser based application
where you can make decisions on hundreds of choices and scenarios from the prior two games and import
them into your game via your Origin account. The game builds that world state for you when you start.
Q: I miss the tactical camera of Dragon Age: Origins, is that still gone in Inquisition?
A: It's actually back and for all platforms! An isometric tactical camera was one of the most requested
features to return to Inquisition after its absence from Dragon Age 2.
Q: Does the PC version offer gamepad support?
A: Sure does.
Q: What!? Multiplayer!?
A: Yes, the multiplayer mode in Dragon Age: Inquisition will feature 4-player cooperative quests separate from
the single-player open-world story.
Q: Will playing MP be required to get the full-game experience?
A: No. The SP campaign is separate from MP. In SP, you have the support of 3 specialists who can send agents to
missions. MP characters are agents. At the start of a MP mission, you will hear one of the specialists explaining the
goal of your mission.
Q: Is multiplayer going to affect my endings in the story?
A: Not at all. Bioware's goal with the multiplayer was to simply give fans the chance to play with their friends for the
first time in the Dragon Age universe. It will have no effect on the single player experience.
