I have a spare Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS X which I was originally using, they're about £40-45 new, but I'm offloading mine for £20 if you're in need of one :P

I vaguely remember owning both of these back when they first came out. I don't think I enjoyed them but can't remember why?

I may look into these and see if I was wrong.

Xwing was great, but Tie Fighter was better. You actually had to fly the Tie Fighters in a completely different style than the rebel ships in the first game, due to the their lack of shielding, which blew my tiny mind as a younger me. Needing to use tactics and all that sort of shit. Coming from Wing Commander it was a revelation.

I wonder how playable it is on a 360 pad, with the keyboard nearby for everything else.

Hmm. Not really enough buttons on that one, right?

I'm being told on Twitter that they are *brutally* hard.

You are me AICMFP. First time I played it, I was shaking with outrage. "NO SHIELDS? WHAT THE FUCK? HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO LIIIIVE?" Then later I got the TIE Advanced and it was SO GOOD.

At the time wronger than a MrChris !

However I'm not sure how well they will have aged , they were long sprawling space operas with stories and missions that followed on from each other and which you had to be relatively skilled to complete even when you knew what was waiting for you.

I managed with it for a while on Elite, and combined with Voice Attack it was fine :)

Not sure about TIE Fighter etc. though, never played them - so no idea how many buttons it really needs.

I used KBAM for TIE Fighter the first time around, because I'm best.

IIRC it was all about high speed strafing and never flying in a straight line. Completely different to the Xwing model of head on battles.

I don't remember them being too hard and I'm pretty sure I completed them both. I suspect I had much better reactions though, and I certainly had more time available to practice :D The most difficult part of the game was building a custom config.sys and autoexec.bat that would free up enough memory to be able to run them and still load your joystick and soundblaster drivers...

What I'd like to know is why nobody but me likes Tachyon: The Fringe. It's got the same basic nuts and bolts as TF but nobody seems to want to give it the time of day. It doesn't have the music (I don't particularly remember any music), or the Star Warsness (but that's never meant anything to me as I haven't seen any of the films).

Why is TIE better than Tachyon?

Because when you play Tachyon you don't get to go "I have you now" every time you get a concussion missile lock?

Yeah but in Tachyon you play as Bruce Campbell so there's tons of other stuff you could say.

God I fucking loved TIE fighter. Although must have spent more time dicking about with the boot disk for it than actually playing it.

I do remember an infuriating escort mission that made me do more swears than I thought possible though.

I also remember going "Look - this is gouraud shading. Look at the wings!" which was, of course, met with "Yes dear". I didn't think graphics could get any fancier.

You'd probably need to glue two of them together.

Because it requires a shitload of buttons to access all the game's functions. As the last two pages of the thread has been discussing in detail.

I tried it with a 360 pad last night. It works OK, ish, but you'd certainly want to keep a keyboard nearby for the other 3/4 of the commands (which, to be fair, you rarely need to access urgently / often.) The default map is a bit weird (Y is bound to "hide cockpit" which I don't think is important enough to be on the pad!) but it is adjustable, either in-game with limits or via a keyboard remap driver like Xpadder.

There are two big caveats though. Firstly, the tiny Xbox stick isn't really accurate enough. You can't pull off the pixel-perfect shots you need to nail a transporter from a long way away, or take down incoming TIEs before they get a lock on you. Secondly, the deadzones are either very small or nonexistent (possibly to counteract the first problem a little), which gave me a different problem: my rather worn 360 pad pulls up almost constantly. Every other game masks this with deadzone but X-Wing doesn't, and it doesn't appear to be adjustable either. Perhaps a less battered pad would be better.

Did you run calibration on your pad?

No. I don't know how. No in-game option and no driver options with the default Windows driver either.
