Be Excellent To Each Other

I'm off to a halloween party this year and need a costume. I was thinking of Jack the Ripper, as he has been in the news a bit recently, but finding a good frock coat and cape is proving tricky and possibly expensive.

Any ideas for something good? There is a theme, which is "Haunted Hollywood", but that can be ignored if need be (hence the jack the ripper). It needs to be scary though, and not just a random dress up costume.

I dressed up as Leatherface a few years ago and it was easy! The best part was that I had a real chainsaw (sans teeth) and I made the mask myself out of a couple of chamois leathers from poundland.

Very simple... Very effective. (providing you have a chainsaw... do you have a hedge trimmer?)

Get a camcorder and a backpack and go as someone from Blair Witch.

Not sure I could make a Volvo outfit work.

Go as Charles Manson. Is Mrs. Trooper going? She could go as the dead pregnant girl, Roman Polanski's ex-girlfriend... I forgot her name.

Go as a smurf.

Get some cardboard and make it into a small 'door' - about 60cm by 45cm I guess. Cut an irregular hole in the middle and paint to look like splintered wood. Make a door handle out of something like a ping pong ball. Put some elastic on the back to hold it on your face like a mask, but with your face 'poking through' the door.

Buy or (probably safer) make a small axe. comb your hair backwards messily, put a bit of light red make up under your eyes so you look manic and tired and yell 'Here's Johnny!'

go as the clown fro it, no one else will think of that.

Or go as a shower, like in Karate Kid, but splatter blood on the curtain and make a butcher's knife

Put a suit on, slick back your hair: Patrick Bateman. Probably won't cost you a single penny.

I'm assuming you have hair in that scenario.

Maybe some surgical/drivers gloves and a dash on blood on the shirt to complete the outfit.

Or as it is haunted Hollywood you could go as Casper, or take a pottery wheel and re-enact the famous Ghost scene.

Me and my wife dressed as characters from the Clockwork Orange more than once during carnival and we loved it. It's easy and looks classy.

Don't know if it's appropriate for halloween though.

got a large black bedsheet for about £7 to fashion the cloak, mask was a fiver.
Black jeans and black leather jacket underneath. Silver pen and some red / blue cut outs from magazine for the chest peice on carboard from a cereal box

The yoda was a monk pre-bought outfit, scarf, and a shirt, yoda ears and liberal face paint

the lightsabers were a previous indulgence

I'm all sorted now. Waistcoat, cloak, top hat, antique walking cane, plastic knife, fake blood. All bought individually and for £80 in total

I've actually had some really good ones from eBay! If you're careful, they can be ace - the one I got last year is beautiful and I'll definitely wear it again!
