An interesting, and sort-of sad write-up about the creation of one of the best multiplayer games of all time.

Are there any Gravity Power (but on the PC) things available on Steam or the PC in general, out of interest?

The article mentions an XBLA Gravity Power-alike.

This website lists a few: http://www.lysator.liu.se/~jensa/gf2/

Somewhere, I have a fairly fully functional, if untested GF style engine.

No levels or art though.

They are looking to release the levels under Creative Commons.

Probably not quite in the format my engine did accept though.

Can't remember the details, but it certainly involved creating tiles which were then processed and could be placed using an editor allowing for fairly quick modular design. Editor was buggy as shit though. (And I don't think I finished the ability to create a full level and have it automatically divided, but it wouldn't have been much work, but certainly more work on the side of the creator)

Think XNA has died a death now though. I haven't been keeping up with anything like this for years now.

I think they were going to be .pngs, so in theory converting them should have been possible.

I guess this is a pretty academic conversation, though.

It was certainly originally done on a block basis.

The complication with png conversion is demarking destructable scenery from non. I had a couple of ways round that.

But yeah, pretty academic, I can't imagine I'd want to put in the effort required to polish the engine anymore anyway, even without the questions about technology.

I loved the little hidden bits in the game on the AP cover disk. One of the first levels had a really thick floor but if you kept bombing the same spot you could make a hole deep enough to fly down into a cavern, I think there was a snow man in there.

Another level had a really long thin twisting tunnel at the top, i could never get through it all to see what was up there (even using the extra fuel power up and going really steady). To this day I still wonder what was up there - maybe just another 'bits' logo.

I cannoxt remember, but I'm fairly sure it was some text.

I think it was text you know. I can't remember what it said but I seem to remember being disappointed with it either way.

I'm fairly sure I can remember - it was a set of blocks with a letter on each one.

I think it said:
ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
And now what?

I just downloaded the Blitz Basic (PC) port of Gravity Power and it ran like ass on my PC, so I'm kinda tempted to have a crack at one myself.

Don't be so hard on yourself, it works pretty well ;)

The only tricky part technically really is the net code, everything else is fairly trivial.
