I'm after Windows 7, preferably Professional or Ultimate, on the cheap.

I have a new MacBook Air and want to dual-boot it with Boot Camp.

Cheapest I can find it is on Amazon, with £5 difference between the two editions (£162 and £167 respectively), but it's similar pricing at my local PC World and I could go and pick it up today rather than wait for shipping.

Anywhere cheaper than those?

Anyone got a spare copy they're willing to sell?

Do we know of any currently cheap places to pick up Windows 7 folks? It's as a replacement for my sister's laptop as her HDD died and I thought I might as well move her from Vista while sorting out a new drive so I only need the Home version. For legit looking versions on Amazon it's hovering around the £80 mark.

Also, stupid question alert: can you just stick either the 32 or 64 bit version on any machine or are there hardware reasons one might not run on a given PC? I know you need the 64 bit version to address RAM more than 4GB but aside from that is there any reason to pick one over the other? Are drivers likely to be a problem with either choice? I've got my own Win7 DVD for the 64 bit home version so I could use that for the install if there are trustworthy sites that sell just the license keys.

If you know any students, you can get it for nowt through the academic alliance. I'll grab details when I'm back at my desk

I would always go with a 64-bit OS if it's a relatively modern computer with a 64-bit CPU.

My sister is currently studying at the OU so that'd work, but I had a look at the site and the only OS' on there are server or embedded versions; there doesn't seem to be home versions on there.

Even if there was, as the whole thing is tied to MS I doubt they'd offer Win7 and are much more likely to push everyone onto Windows 8.

It's definitely a 64 bit CPU (some kind of Athlon thing) so cool; 64-bit it is.

Ah, balls. Sorry dude. That's all changed since I last looked on there.

It's a shame as that would've worked out nicely. It did mention that there are sometimes other products available from the specific unis but the page for the OU says these are only available during specific enrollment periods which have now passed. Bugger.

Yeah, but it's for my sister's laptop so I want to go legit just so I don't face any support headaches with it later. I was happy enough buggering around with XP back in the day to keep ahead of Microsoft's security patches but I can't be arsed with that kind of nonsense any more.

Anyway, I just bit the bullet and bought it from Amazon for about eighty quid. Fucking hard drive failure has cost me £120 now. Why can't things just work rather than randomly breaking eh?

My friend was pleasantly surprised with how easy it was to obtain a thingy-bob to get Win 7 ultimate up and running on multiple PCs. This was around 3 years ago, and the PCs have been rock steady with no other fiddling required, updates and everything work automatically just fine. So he tells me.
