I don't know if I like this specific one, but I hope the idea catches on. It might be a good way to cut down on a lot of that vacuum cleaner noise, as well as keep things cool. A nice AV unit style case would be cool. Maybe you could pretend it was an Amiga CDTV...

Come the revolution, people who use this phrase will be up against the wall alongside programmers who use the phrases "non-trivial" and "sub-optimal".

I take the point about the specific case, though, but I would like an eggbox that looked like a piece of AV stuff. And a quieter one.

Man, I really wanna hear some of y'alls eggboxs. Mine is not really audible at all.

In order to recase the item, the box pretty much has to be bigger = no point, in my opinion.

Can you just replace the fans in the case if you are that upset by their noise?
Or is it just the DVD drive? In which case putting a noisy drive in a bigger box wont make that much difference unless you sound proof the case.

TBH, I fail to see the point of this product.

And I have been wanting to use the phrase "epic fail" for a while now. hah

I use the phrase "epic fail" all the time in real life.

Usually when talking about my cat.

Jet engine. Seriously.

Fail is not a noun. This annoys me almost as much as people using "impact" as a verb. Grrr.

Looks like I'm going to have to action that request not to use 'impact' as a verb. Understood.

The noisy bit is the DVD drive - notice how the noise pretty much halves whenever you return to the dashboard after playing a disc game.

If you ask me, the epicest fail of the 360 (apart from the obvious heat problem) was the fact the hard drive became an optional extra.

My DVD drive has been nigh on silent since I had the box back from MS.

Until it slowly gunges up again and starts go GNRRRRK KLICK KLICK KLICK when you put a new disc in or start a game.

Noisy with or without the DVD drive running, just more noisy with it trying to get launch speed. You can tell when watching HD DVDs on the (silent) HD drive, the eggbox itself is loud, and gets in the way of quiet parts in movies.

Yup, mine's been as good as silent too. Which is a bit ironic, as ever since I've had the main unit back from MS, my HD-DVD drive has been buzzing like hell whenever I've put a disc in it.

Apparently the new update (they're not Miis, honest guv... the Eurogamer comments lot have dubbed them 'douchebags' because of their smug faces) will let you copy games onto the HDD and run them from there. You still have to have the disc in the drive to do this, but it allegedly will speed up loading times and also reduced the texture draw-in for games like Arse Effect and Grunt Shaft Otto Fore!!!
