So I just saw a policeman (in a film) talk down a suicide jumper from a building, by explaining that he didn't want to go down with him, he just wanted to know his name and address, as it was such a mess after the fact. Which got me thinking of other police films where they have to talk down someone wanting to commit suicide. 2 sprung to mind.

One where the cop handcuffs himself to the jumper and they jump off together and land in a sheet or an airbag or something, and one where the cop takes a water melon up with him, and drops that, to show the effect of what would happen.

I'm pretty sure I know the handcuff one, but I can't picture the water melon one (I actually thought it was going to be the film I'm watching now) any ideas?

Can anyone name all 3?

1) Cop tells jumper that he doesn't want to go down with him, and can he have his name/address to help with identification.
2) Cop handcuffs himself to the jumper and jumps off, they both land on a sheer/air bed.
3) Cop takes water melon to show jumper what would happen to his head if he jumps.

There are others that are stuggling to be pulled out of my memory, so if you can think of any, why not describe them and see if anyone can guess them?

Not seen that, it might be in that, but it's not the film I'm watching now.

I've just looked on google for number 3, and it appears it's a tv show, but it's a TV show I've never heard of before.

But the description (I can't find a video clip) sounds like what I remember, so I must have watched it!

Didn’t I? Here goes...

Me and 3 friends were just coming out of the cinema in Quinton after seeing Spiderman 2 (or 3.. I forget now). On the way to the car, we noticed a few kids over the road shouting and playing up. One of them shouted that there was a bloke on the other side of the railings of the motorway bridge and he was going to jump off. We scoffed at this and went to drive off. As I drove past the bridge I noticed that there was a guy there!

I screeched to a halt and we all piled out the car. The rest of my friends hung back and called the police while I went towards the bridge and sat down on the pavement to talk to the guy. I introduced myself and asked him what was going on. He said that his girlfriend had had a miscarriage that day and things were generally falling apart. I remember saying something like I had it worse because I’d just seen Spiderman (It was probably Spiderman 3 now I think about it)

Anyway, I carried on chatting to him for what seemed like forever. I could see a crowd building up slightly round the corner and out of his sight and I eventually asked if we could carry the conversation on my side of the rail. He stood up and I made sure that I didn’t let go of him as I was holding his hand. I grabbed him when he stood up and pulled him onto my side of the railing and just kind of collapsed on the floor hugging him.

Then the police arrived and all the crowd came closer to see what was happening.

The best bit about it was that we went back into the cinema to give statements etc and the cinema manager gave us all drinks. They were like those fruit shoot drinks with the funny drinking spout that you had to suck. As you took a drink, your lips made a really loud kissing sound and everyone in the cinema was doing it! Even the police. It was like something out of Naked Gun

Good work!
What kinds of things did you talk about with him? The situation, or anything but?

It's all a bit of a blur to be honest. I think I spoke about the film a fair bit. I asked questions about his situation but tried to stay away from the dark stuff.

I probably did enough to distract him from what he was thinking about.

You "collapsed onto the floor hugging him", and that's your story and you're sticking to it, officer. Hmmmm.
