Okay, I'm sure you know about Codemasters. I'm sure you know about their 8-bit/16-bit catalogue. And I'm sure you know they had a real knack for bringing out decent arcade adventures (mainly Dizzy of course, but there were others!).

But I'm not sure if any of you were enough of a Codies fanatic back in the late 80's/early 90's to recall one particular Codies adventure title called "Slightly Magic". Here, lemme give you a video of the Speccy version...



The point I'm trying to make? Well, it's hoping to get a remake! Or a 'demake'. Or an improved tribute. Whatever the best term is. The idea is to stay faithful to the 8-bit graphics while making significant improvements here and there. And - for one thing - anyone who's financially well made enough to happily pledge over £55 can even get their own room in the game complete with self-picture and chosen name. Which is nice.

The chap who designed the game - Colin Jones - just recently had the Slightly IP rights revert to him, hence why he's able to do something like this now and why Codies aren't involved. He's hoping to make this for PC/Mac/Linux/OUYA and iOS/Android, so that's pretty much all the popular comp and mobile platforms targeted. Another thing he hopes to do is make Slightly into a trilogy (something he originally planned) so interested parties can expect a Slightly Spooky in the works too if this succeeds.

I'm aware previous 'retro revival' KS attempts failed (which is a shame), but Mr Jones' asking target for this little project is hardly even on the scale of what the Oliver Twins were expecting the Dizzy fanbase to cough up. It'd be such a shame if even that fails to be achieved.

I've shouted about Slightly on here before. Spectrum version is great, I don't have much time for the Amiga version. CPC version is a rather bland Speccy port. The Speccy 128k version is the one to play as it is the original.

Now as for the Kickstarter, while what he is asking for isn't that much (7 grand) the problem is, in his own words, that he is recreating the Spectrum version:

"So basically, ZX Spectrum graphics, which we ported to the C64 and Amstrad, without the hardware limitations and with a couple of very small tweaks."

I have it on the Spectrum on tape and images of it for the other two formats. Why on earth would I want to pay for it again when I can play it easily already with the same graphics any time I want.

Sorry but no deal. Bought it, played it, give me improvements that make it worthwhile to pay you again!

I can understand your query about how he's not changing it very much from the Spectrum version, but still....... if this happens to be the only way to give him the drive he needs to make more adventures/chapters featuring Slightly the Wizard (and he's said the sequel will naturally use all-new and fancy graphics)....... (of course, maybe there's a reason why he can't/won't use the Amiga graphics instead). And hey, his old chum Allister Brimble is willing to remake the music too!

I'll happily admit to being one of those people willing to buy a new version of an old game if it entices me enough. *looks at day-one bought PC/iOS/Android copies of Sonic CD*

I liked it at the time, but find that games of that type haven't generally held up too well.

I promise not to mention Dizzy again honest guv, but another similarity is how you've got to time it just right on the old Jump button to avoid killing yourself on some deadly object (or in some cases, draining your energy). This is almost always how you lose your lives (of which you have 3) but it adds to the addictiveness and lastability of the whole thing as you're always working out what you did wrong and how to get further next time with every game. The scale of the thing is pretty vast too (I know - I've finished it!). The 0898 helpline is on offer here once again if you get stuck, which provides ample opportunities to 'accidentally' dial the wrong number and listen to something more interesting instead (but not really, kiddies - we'll leave that sort of thing down to the old pervs, and Andy.
Talking of progressing (which we were a minute ago), the Codies certainly seem to have got this flip-screen arcade adventure lark sussed out pretty well. In fact, I'm even going to say that Slightly Magic is better than the Dizzy games, because with the addition of spells (and having to collect them all, plus lots of other objects, in order to complete the game) you've got to think quite a lot more about what to do rather than simply using the correct thing in the correct place. The graphics and presentation are excellent too - full of colour and some nice bits of animation (such as the way you can sink into your cloak to duck) and some absolutely brilliant 128 soundtracks. All in all, Slightly Magic is, well, absolutely 'magic' really.

I forgot to mention in my first post: I thoroughly enjoyed playing the C64 version as a schoolkid, hence why this particular project grabbed my undivided attention the moment I spotted an article on it at GBATemp. (Which, incidentally, is the only news website I frequent which has bothered to mention it...)

I was thinking though...... what would a KS project require to show at minimum to get most backers interested? People have complained before about being shown nothing more than a few concepts in the past regarding some of them, hence making it difficult to convince them to pledge. But surely the bods responsible for the project aren't sure whether it's worth taking the time to code actual gameplay mechanics and footage if they're concerned that nobody will bite anyway? Sounds like a bit of a vicious circle to me.

So! Even though the Kickstarter campaign inevitably failed, Mr Jones was charmed enough by the spreading of the message through blogs, Facebook and what not that he'll be making the game anyway.

He's already created a teaser site to go with it!

Oh hey, remember this? Weeeeeeeelllllllllllll, the remake will officially become available in around.......... five hours time!

I already made my preorder a few days ago. Decided to spend extra and get some physical goodies mainly to show my support and see how good said goodies are.

Can only hope it lands on Google Play at some point...
