The Prime Minister: We have put in place some of the toughest controls that one can possibly have within a democratic Government, and the TPIMs are obviously one part of that. We have had repeated meetings of the extremism task force—it met again yesterday—setting out a whole series of steps that we will take to counter the extremist narrative, including by blocking online sites.

I'm assuming the initial definition of 'Extremist' is 'anyone who disagrees'

Is there a definition of extremist?

What about sites like "I like poo!" And "extreme roller skating"?

First they came for the Piratebay,
and I didn't speak out because I used Isohunt.

Then they came for the Torrent sites,
and I didn't speak out because I had Netflix.

Then they came for all my emails,
and I didn't speak out because free email is so convenient. How could I change?

Then they came for all my phonecalls,
and I didn't speak out because when do I talk about important things?

Then they came for my Facebook and Twitter
and I didn't speak out because life is so easy.

Then they came for the 'Extremist' Websites,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't an 'Extremist'. <----- We are here.

Then they came for the Internet Dicks,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't an Internet Dick.

Then they came for any viewpoint they disliked
and I didn't speak out, because who knows what would happen.

Then never came for me,
They just made it so I had no voice to come for them.

That's Mark Thomas's (domestic extremist that he is) career screwed - seeing him last night a lot of the 100 Minor Acts of Dissent has some web aspect.

Not sure if this is 100% relevant to this discussion, but whenever I hear about the government forcing ISPs to block sites (such as popular torrent sites like Piratebay, KickAssTorrents etc.), it's always the same big 4 or 5 ISPs they target (BT, O2, Sky etc.).

I was happily with O2 for years, then they got bought out by Sky a few months back (and Sky can get f**ked frankly...).

I cancelled my contract & signed up with Plusnet, one of the (relatively) smaller, lesser-known ISPs.

Now no sites are blocked as far as I can tell.

I guess it's not worth the government putting resources into targeting the 5-10% (extremely rough guess !) of people that aren't with one of the big ISPs, and that's just fine with me !

My experience is mainly of torrent sites.
Not sure if the same situation is true of so-called "extremist" web-sites (not my bag !), but I'm guessing it is ?

Plus.net is BT.

The government doesn't need to put resources in, ISPs have to.comply. There's probably an acceptance that smaller ISPs don't have the revenue to install the gear while also not being the major sources of infringement.

If you are interested in a bit of insight on this subject. It's worth having a look at RevKs Rants. It's the personal blog of a director/owner of Andrews & Arnold a small/medium ISP, he's got some strongly held (and realistic) views on site blocking (ie. it's a waste of time).

EDIT. It's probably a bit more useful if I Link to his post directly
