But on which future release, Street Fighter 4 or Soul Calibur 4?

Do the Beteons prefer one over the other, will some be buying both?

I presumed SF4 will be arcade only for a fair while. Is that erroneous?

Being a mahoosive Street Fighter II fan, it would have to be Soul Calibur 4 for me.

No, wait, the other one.

I'm not really into my beat 'em ups. Can someone change my mind? I quite enjoyed the demo of Soul Caliber on XBLAH.

Soul Calibur is the best beat-em-up I've played since the original Street Fighter II; the only game I've played since which improves on it is its own superb sequel (Gamecube version in my exp.). Oh! Apart from Tech Romancer, another great Dreamcast one-on-one.

@Dimrill: You're not wrong.

I will be buying SCIV as soon as possible.

I will not be buying SFIV, after the insult that was SFIIXBLA.

I'll probably end up with both, but I'm not a huge fan of technical beat-em-ups that require perfect timing and ridiculous memory skills. I do love Soul Calibur on the DC, though. Still play it with my arcade stick to this VERY DAY.

I'll probably get both, maybe not at launch though. Shame XBLA SC doesn't have online play, really.

I'd love them to get an old version of Tekken 3 or similar up on XBLA. I loved them. I enjoyed Soul Blade, etc, but it never had the depth that Tekken did, IMHO. Button bashing or relying on repeating two moves over and over seemed far too useful in it.

Tekken was great. I'd probably prefer 2 over 3 though, I thought it started to get a bit cluttered at that point.

While Soul Calibur does have some insane combos, I've never felt the need to use them over much simpler stuff - and I am fairly good at Soul Calibur. *Points at 200/200 GS on SC, as well as general insanely goodness on it's sequel. And not buying of SCIII due to wanky PS2 pad*

The only other fighter I've spent any serious amount of time with in recent years is tekken 5. I've never really connected as well with Tekken, for instance. SC has some kind of consistent internal logic. Horizontal, vertical and kick attacks all do pretty much what you would intuitively expect them to do (aside from the odd headbutt here or there). Tekken, you have 4 buttons, one for each limb, but no real idea about what each limb will do when you summon it into action. So yes, you do need a good memory for that.

Can you press all four buttons at once and watch your fighter jump in the air and mong out?

The Tekken games were slow and dull. I loved playing Tekken II with my ex when we were stoned, until she banned me from playing as Baek and I stopped winning. Oh, and I liked Gon in Tekken III.

I think I might get Soul Calibur IV next week. It comes out close to pay day. I really shouldn't, though, so might give it a miss.

But Third Strike was much more technical and time-demanding, and fans of SFII rarely got into it on 'brand recognition' alone. I wonder if this one will be any more accessible...

Virtua Fighter on the 360 is mint. I dont own it though. I had it on the Ps3 and it was ace also.

Soul Caliber looks ace, but the only one of that "series" i have played was Soul Edge on the PS1. That was a great game.

I should get my Soul Calibur IV tomorrow or Friday. Very much looking forward to it, though I don't really need it, as I got Super Smash Bros last weekend.

I've pre-ordered SC4. I didn't know SF4 was out in the near future, though.

Bloody Roar 2 was, IMO, the best fighting game so far.

The last beat-em-up I properly enjoyed was Shadow Fighter. But then I don't have a console.

She never said "Whore!", it were the bloke what was raping her who said that.

There's also John Woo Presents Stranglehold, which gave you an achievement for visiting the shop from the main menu - yes, without even starting the game at all ever. The fucking bastards.

Why do games need fucking achievements? Achievements are the kind of things that make me tetchy.

Did I mention I'm tetchy today?

Just to mention, Soul Calibur IV is great. Hugely addictive, lovely character creation - and you can have great lightsaber duels as a little extra. Shame custom characters can't use lightsabers, though.

I played this through all the characters (that I know of) in normal story mode yesterday. Then I had lots of fun making my own character. Well, I don't know how to make one from scratch, but I made my own version of Ivy who has a spiffy top hat and monocle. It seems a bit of a shame that the equipment determines the skill points, so you might end up having to choose Silly Hat For Silly People to get things perfect.

I took my three Ivys to tower mode and got her to level 8 which meant I could use a bigger skill. Hooray. I also got a couple of chests, though I will probably end up cheating (consulting the internets) to find what requirements each level has for getting treasure. So far I won a soldier hat and warrior trousers. I wish there were some kind of screenshot upload thing, my character looks pretty cool!

I had one quick go at an xbox live match. I lost 3-2 but it was close, and I think I fell to Teh Cheese Move. Because I am clueless at blocking and stuff.

Hooray! I found which icon lets you make your own characters from scratch, so Handsome Jim and Murder Bess were born. I then goofed around with another one and got the basic character to the right level so I could choose the skills that perfectly match the scores on the character for :nerd: acheivement points.

Then I got cross with Alastor on level 18 of the tower for being a Big Cheating Git. Then I got beaten up by a girl in a fur suit on level five of the descent.

I also played through arcade mode as Yoda to get the apprentice.

You think level 18 is bad? Just wait until level 56 of ascent - that cost me a pair of headphones, that one did (You have to do levels 53,54,55 and 56 with one character, each has 3 or four really quite tricky opponents, 56 being 4 lizardmen, and they managed to take me down from full health to death without me dealing any significant damage on them)

Oh, and level 15 of descent has another cat woman, who's even harder - Again beating me from full health during my only attempt at descent to date.

It's certainly doable, but not easy, and will require a fair amount of patience.

As far as I can tell, the only hard levels on descent up to 20 are 5 and 15, so long as you have something like HP drain A equiped (It's vital for most of the tower of souls, the only time i've had to change away from it was two floors around ascent 45 which require an entirely different character).

I haven't done any clever skill fiddling, though I realize I should.

I think this is the achievement Grim... got:

1. Start of a New Era (5 points): Welcome to the new world of Soulcalibur! — You just need to watch the beginning video from front to back.

I tend to go for the highest hp drain available (To recover HP) and either something to increase damage (helps HP drain too) or the nullify ring out (You really can't afford to lose a character that cheaply, and Zalasamel in particular is very good at lobbing you out of the ring with no warning)

Although chucking on several soul draining options is a good idea for levels where critical finishes are more likely.

The final option I use is where you have two or more characters have a offensive powerhouse and a defensive guy. Bring in the defensive one when the attacking one is heavily damaged and wait for him to recover to bring him in.

There's a fair amount of depth to the system, but unfortunately you can end up with a character looking like a complete goon in order to get the stats you desire.

Yeah, I've had that with dodgy outfits. I made a couple to play on live without the skills though so I could go for cool looking. Currently I've been using the same character for both/all my choices for now, so I at least get skill levels up while attempting the tower. I'll put some proper thought into it at the weekend maybe.

At some point during my tower progress, I think I unlocked a bunch of outfit stuff. I read somewhere that hitting 30 honors/acheivements of some kind would unlock all the outfit items, even if you don't do the specific thing each level to win them. This seems to be true in that I've since "won" items that I already have (I bought every item as it became available, and got an acheivement for that). However, I still see some outfit items on the mix-n-match characters you fight in tower mode (and in some cases, on the alt-outfit for regular characters) that I don't seem to have at all. Are there even more outfit items to collect, or are some few pieces always going to be "AI only"?
