Apparently it helps get a faster GPS lock; fuck alone knows how.

More info here. And as that link's talking about the original Nexus back in 2011 this obviously isn't a new idea.

No sure it'll get a faster GPS lock at all*, but it will give you a more accurate altitude reading which is pretty fucking handy if you use Viewranger or something. Mind you if you actually needed that sort of accuracy you'd be better off with a dedicated GPS that isn't going to die after an hour or so's use so  :belm:

PS. What the fuck has happened to the URL button? Highlight text I want to change to a link, press & sticks the link wherever the fuck it feels like it**.
*If it did then the big boys like Magellan & Garmin would have been talking that up all those years ago when they first released GPS units with barometric sensors built in.
**This bit may be exaggerated.

Google's engineers think so and I'm assuming they haven't stuck a whole sensor in three different phones without a reason; especially in the Nexus range which are already down to the bare bones profit-margin wise.

Click it; paste your URL in the box that appears and click OK; then type text you want it to appear as in the second box and click OK again and it'll automatically format it all for you.

Did you read what the man actually wrote? It was a vague "...or so I've heard...". Like I said the big GPS companies would be shouting it from the rooftops if it gave a faster lock but they aren't.

Thinking about it...
aGPS makes a difference because it can a) get the local time without needing to calculate it based on the data received from the constellation, b) actively download the almanac* from a server instead of waiting to receive it all from a satellite sending at something like 50 bits a second.

A barometer will make next to no difference because unless it was calibrated all it could do is note the current pressure & a change in pressure and they would both be meaningless without knowing what altitude it is at & what the pressure is meant to read there. How would it know that? a) Calibrate it next time you are at a known altitude like standing at a trig point or next to the sea or standing next to a mapped feature that's on a contour line or b) let it auto calibrate based on the GPSs calculations. So now you have your barometer calibrated to a known altitude & it might even save your GPS from having to make a few calculations...

...but what happens once the weather changes...? It's now potentially inaccurate by a few hundred metres ;)
*Which tells it roughly where every satellite in the constellation should be at a given time.

PS. I know what the button does. I pressed the fucking thing & was expecting it to work like it used to.

Wow. You're bizarrely aggressive over a button on an internet forum. And if you know how it works why ask in the first place?

If you don't like naughty words you're probably best to supermegaawesomeblock me since I reckon ~90% of my posts have the swears in them... or you could TTFU... ;)

PS. My question was more "what the snottery fuck* happened to this button?", not "how does this badly bleached arse* button work?" anyway.
*There ye go, self censored tae fuck!

Eh? I never mentioned swear words and don't care what percentage of your posts use them; I'm also not sure how we've got from me answering a question about a button to being told to block you and something the fuck up*. You seem to be enjoying your weird and utterly needless escalation though so who am I to stand in the way of it?

Anyway, to answer your new question about the button; it changed because the way it used to work was stupid so I asked Grim to change it and he did.

As for the barometer GPS thing, I know next to nothing about this stuff and you obviously do so fair enough. I'm still not convinced though that Google would've gone to the trouble of sticking it in three models of phone and then telling the world why if it was all bollocks. There's a bit more detail from one of the Google guys here in case that helps but, as I say, I don't know enough about this stuff to comment either way.

*Seriously, what was that supposed to be? "Tit the fuck up?" "Twat the fuck up?" "Turnip the fuck up?" Help me out here.

You're just the latest target of Bamba's passive aggression.

Every so often, he/she/it wonders aloud why poster x is getting aggro, in doing so trying to wind them up. Just nut him/her/it next time.

It's out!
£299 for 16Gb
£339 for 32Gb

Better camera and slightly bigger screen (and higher resolution), plus 4G are the main differences.
I was really hoping for a much improved battery, but it is 2300mAh on both models :(

Not enough of a difference from the 4 to get me to buy one sight unseen, i'll wait till I can play with one in the flesh and some good comparison reviews are out.

I have a question. What's wrong with the smartphone you're currently using? Why do you need to obtain a new one?

Um...... TWO questions

What's wrong with the smartphone you're currently using? Why do you need to obtain a new one? Do you have more money than sense?

THREE questions

What's wrong with the smartphone you're currently using? Why do you need to obtain a new one? Do you have more money than sense?

In my case the answers are:

1. It's a Galaxy Ace wot my missus bought me last year. It's OK, but I can't move enough apps on to the card to prevent it bleating about not having enough memory even to update the small number of apps I managed to install.

2. I don't NEED a new one and can't justify buying one.

3. Definitely not.

I don't see any particularly compelling reason to upgrade from the 4.

Aside from the ability to distinguish it from everyone elses phone at the music quiz.

4G is probably the only genuine differentiator (aside from the usual incremental updates) but even that depends how much you're bothered.

The number of times I've felt 3G was too slow can be counted on approximately 0 hands. Not an issue for me. Having to dick about with contracts certainly would be.

It seems nice enough that if I was getting a new phone today, I'd definitely consider it, but I expect my HTC One to last me at least another year before I want a new phone. Maybe longer.

Speed isn't an issue for me in the slightest, actually getting a signal that works and lets you download at all is the real issue.
Is 4G any better for that?

I can't see how it would be, at all. In the areas you don't have a signal, you still won't have a signal, unless the providers extend their coverage. But if they did, it would extend on 3G as well.

I might be talking utter bollocks but I think the frequency of the waves at different points of the spectrum actually have different levels of penetration so there is a chance of better/worse reception on 4G even if everything else stays the same. I think. Maybe.

It's not just a signal problem though, it's a bandwidth problem. Quite often I have a signal, but can't actually do anything.

I'd imagine it will be something like:

And then "Why do I have to charge it in so much?"

He's relatively tech literate so I think he knows what to expect generally, he's just never felt like owning a smartphone himself before it seems. I'm not even sure why he's changed his mind now.

On a related note, I forgot from the Nexus 4 launch quite how much of a fucking terrible raping the PAYG prices are. £210 more just for the privilege of buying it from O2!?

And then "Why do I have to charge it in so much?"

Ah, I see from the specs that the Nexus 5 has inductive charging!

I usually use a Samsung Blackberry-a-like for my day-to-day phone just because it lasts at least a week on one charge, but I could get back into Android phones if you can just plonk it down on a plate when you get home or to my desk...

The 4 has inductive charging. Never worked very well for me though.

Does it work with the S4?

I'll probably have Mrs Grim...'s N5 with me tomorrow.

Thoughts so far:
  • It's not as big as I thought it would be
  • Where's the SIM card?

Luckily Mrs Grim... is used to that.

Whether she's opening my pants or our bank statement!

Do you mean, "where does the SIM card go?" If so:
