Starting to go through my holiday pics, and this one of Smerwick Harbour on the Dingle Peninsula, Ireland, really jumped out:

Most of the images from the Saturday's ACW battle weren't up to snuff. A lot of noisy grain and blur oddly enough, with a complete lack of sharpness. Bit confused as to why. Some came out okay though. Here's one...

Took a hell of a lot of processing, mind.

Oops, forgot to answer this, Natural History Museum, Londinium.

Yup, purdy clouds and reflections there Kern. Bit jealous of your trip!

Still in love with the X100. Still scared of street photography...

No reply yet from Fujifilm, but then it is the weekend. X100 still pretty nifty on lower ISO sensitivities, happy to say. Here's a rather cute wolf.

So I'm going out every lunchtime now to take photos. Reactions to the X100 are way different to my DSLR, rather than shy away hissing as I'm used to these two lads asked me for a portrait!

They totally did. I understood not their strange tongue, but their stomping feet, hoarse shouts and wild gesticulating arms spoke to me in a language other than words, "Come, photograph us. Show the world what is going on here."

I'm trying new techniques and presets in Lightroom, and doing extensive tinkering. I'm learning a lot but I'm undecided yet if these new looks are a good direction for me. They lack the honesty and clean nature of my older, subtler and only very slightly washed out 'Stephen Shore' styles, but they gain in immediate atmosphere and a sense of time. Is it a worthwhile trade-off? I'm unsure to be honest, but it's fun tinkering. I think that in time a half-way ground will be found by me, but for now I hope you enjoy the new (or should I say old) look of my photos. This one is an old Oregon one I've dug out. It's accompanied by two I took in the Brecon Beacons on the weekend.

They have a very distinct look to me, Pete. Trying to place it... like over saturated colour plates from books in the 80's.

I think you've answered your own question, that you need to pull this style back some more towards your usual, IMHO.

Very interesting stuff though.

Cheers Zardoz. I think you're right.

I also think that over the weekend I'm going to put my all into creating some presets that will define my shooting for a good while to come, and that will allow for subtle evolving. Now that I'm going to send up a 'Buy Prints' facility in the new year and aim on getting more series, I think my blog and site will need a more considered approach.

So I reckon I'll divide my photos into the following:

America: Light toned and luminiscent or slightly-moody, but going the Stephen Shore / Alec Sloth route. Fresh but faded. Colours more akin to Moonrise Kingdom.

US Civil War: Slightly faded, docu-fairytale look I've got going already. Heavy on the blues and chestnuts.

Wales landscapes: Between America and the grainy rich film look of the Brecon shots.

Street photography: More exagerated tones. Winogrand B&W meets William Klein grunge, or LaRoque deep colour richness.

Portraits & detail shots: Kodak Portra / Kodak 125+ B&W film style, low contrast.

I'm also going to make my first print this month. Quite excited, but I'm not sure what shot I'm going to make it of. Maybe one of the prarie houses.

Hiked up Snowdonia this weekend with some mates. I've probably never been jammier as far as weather and photo opportunities go, as a chopper on a training exercise roared overhead and circled the tarn below me. I took so many pics on this hike that I'm a bit overwhelmed processing them, but expect a blog post in a few days. Meanwhile, Chopper Dave to the rescue!

Cool dude, you'll love it! Getting out of the cities on NY eve is the way to go. Bring a bottle of whiskey and some mince pies and you're sorted.

So, I've spent pretty much all evening working on the photos from the Snowdonia hike. It almost killed me, but I'm very happy with the results. Here's my favourite image from the run, but the rest you can see at the usual place: http://petetakespictures.com/blog

Hope you like!

Fucking hell, Pete - that's a great pic. That's a desktop wallpaper for sure, it knocks the socks off the photos in Microsoft's "UK" Windows theme.

Oh, and cheers for the PM - keep forgetting to respond, will do so now!

Got lucky with a sunrise shot visiting my father-in-law's house in Michigan. Danielle spotted this whilst up at 5am or so (jetlag), came and got me. This is just processed through the iPad as a JPG, I haven't revisited the RAW yet:

Wouldn't look out of place in a National Geographic.

Superb.

That's a fantastic pic Pete - even more so than usual!

I initially thought it was a colourised version of a 19th Century short - there's something timeless about the setting and the subject.

Holy shit! Looks like the Flickr community liked it too as in the last 24 hours it's had 7,239 hits, with the total run-off onto the rest of my photostream being 21,184! 8)

Thanks for the nice words, chaps. Woah. Now if I could only keep that quality up! :)
