A new game in the Arkham series has been announced! I'm excited.

Eurogamer wrote:
Developer WB Montreal is using Rocksteady's custom modified Unreal engine to create the game, GI said.

In the image released below we see Batman and Deathstroke, who makes his debut in a core Arkham game. The creative director is Eric Holmes, who worked on The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction and Prototype.

Warner Bros. has announced Batman Arkham Origins for the PC, PlayStation 3, Wii U and Xbox 360. Next-generation consoles were not mentioned.

Origins is the next game in the Arkham series, and follows the release of Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, according to a report by GameFocus.

Those games were developed by Rocksteady. Arkham Origins is made by WB Games Montreal. Origins is set several years before the previous Arkham games, and sees the player assume the role of a younger Batman who meets many of the series' iconic characters for the first time.

Also in development is a Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita spin-off called Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate. Both Arkham Origins and Blackgate will launch on 25th October 2013.

That's all we've got for now. A logo is below.

A 3DS game too... Right up my street.

There's a report that I've read this morning that this will include multiplayer.

Some kind of mode where you play the bad guys and are trying to stop Batman.

This is a similar response to Alberto on Twitter. I agree... I hope they don't scrimp on the main game because of this.

Are we (right-thinking people) genuinely in the minority in not expecting every fucking game to have multiplayer shoe-horned into and so devs are just giving the market what they want? Or are people actually happy to have 'only' well crafted single player experiences at times and this is just meddling from out of touch execs, or whoever, looking at every game as a list of bullet point features? Enquiring minds want to know.

Devs wrongly think they have to keep people playing their games for months on end, basically. They point to CoD as an example.

It could be fun, but I won't play it as much as I would the single player. I'd rather them put a load of effort into the single player game then have a tacked on multiplayer option which doesn't fit in with the story.

Its also seen as a way to prevent you selling the game on after you've finished it , and then can be an additional revenue stream (using online passes) if you actually have the nerve to sell their games onto someone else.

That said, I'd much rather have single player of the same standard than multi-player that "isn't as good".

How the multiplayer will work:

Quote:
"With one hero and one faction [in the "hunter" rooms], one of the things you quickly notice, though, is that this is okay for Batman, who's got a target-rich environment. The flipside is that, if Batman doesn't want to come down and play with you, or if he's picking on one guy over and over, there's pretty much nothing else to do. We wanted to make sure there's always something to worry about."

Splash Damage's solution is to throw another faction of goons into the mix. So the Joker's gang and Bane's gang are already facing off against each other, and only then do Batman and Robin turn up.

It's 3 vs 3 vs 2, in other words - but the developer still hasn't finished with the twists. If the basic setup suggests an asymmetric spin on the standard deathmatch template, the new design also adds control points.

The collectors edition has been announced. It's got a statue, a book, some DLC, a metal sleeve and a holographic box.

No surprises there but I've no doubt I'll end up buying it.

I'm not because I won't be buying a new Xbox for ages so it means I'll get a chance to play this.

Plus... I need another statue in my gaming collection

Watched that video with the sound off and I echo Bamba's sentiments. I only really enjoy the story, and didn't bother with the predator challenges in City.

I haven't played City yet. It's next on my list of Steam games after I finish LA Noire.

It was an absolute treat for me.

I only played on Medium, and for me the fights were the right level of tense.

Plus, you start with a few extra gadgets than you do with Asylum, so you can start exploring straight away and just beating up random thugs if it takes your fancy.

To my mind it suffers a little bit precisely because of that though; it's almost too open at the start and feels confusing and directionless. It gets it's shit together pretty quickly after that and becomes an utter joy, but very beginning didn't set a great impression.

Oh yes !! get to it now. I did enjoy Asylum more but that's probably more to do with it being the first taste experience & it had slightly more metroidvania tones.

It does get better after the first couple of hours, I didn't feel it did a good job of drawing you in initially but if you push past that it's excellent once it gets it's hooks in.

Yeah, although initial impressions (i.e. the demo) were bad.

From my perspective, Arkham cities biggest failing was not being Dark Souls. (See: all other games that aren't Dark Souls)

When does the review embargo end? I'd be nervous about preordering this, considering it isn't a Rocksteady game.

I hope they don't milk this franchise like Assassin's Creed et al.

Embargo presumably ends at midnight as that puts us on release day. I'm still a bit nervous about it as well so I'll be waiting for some reviews to come in before I put any money down, but as long as it's decent I'll pick it up at lunch time tomorrow.

If you can get past the so-so controls, poor camera angles and general repetitive nature of it then... it's okay.

Unlikely AC is a yearly released cow but the Batman games are on a two year schedule. I'm hoping this was palm off to another company because Rocksteady are working on the next gen game :)

That's probably exactly what it is, but why bother? Why not wait another year and get Rocksteady to put out the next game.

Because money.
