Actually, you'd get to know lots of older people with the same initial as you.

I think xkcd is wrong about something :o

Yeah, I've posted about these before. My most recent one was a swim-meet tracker invitation where people could sign up to monitor certain races at swim meets.

I signed up for as many as I could and then requested to swap a load of them with real people who had otherwise already signed up.

Why has the Guardian recently become full of comment pieces and stories about Australia? I could sort of understand it in the run up to the election, but it's become a fixture now.

Because they have an Australian site and editorial team now.

http://www.theguardian.com/au

I'm guessing they publish some Australian articles on the UK and US sites too.

Ooooh, I see.

A significant number of the comment pieces on the UK site are Aus-based. I really can't see that there's the demand in the UK to hear about another country's dreary politics.

Also: why don't you just read another newspaper? You do nothing but complain about the Guardian.

That actually might have had a fairly catastrophic effect on the world economy. Australia, for all its charms, doesn't really matter as much.

As for why I read the Guardian if I complain about it so much, you've sort of answered your own question there.

Anyway, as the alternative is the Indy, which is utterly ridiculous shite, or the Times, which is utterly horrible tory shite, or the Torygraph, which is just utterly shite, I need somewhere to get news from.

I find that if you read the Guardian and the Telegraph and go for something in the middle you generally get The News.

Have you got a link to that? It sounds great.

It's supremely irritating that the options are pinko lefty ridiculous crap like the Guardian or Indy or hateful right wing crap like the Telegraph or Times. Of the two sides, though, one should always pick the lesser of two weevils, hence me reading the Guardian.

The Mail exists in an entirely separate category.

Whenever I pick up a copy it seems to always be articles I've already read on the website a day earlier.

Don't click the 'update' button for windows 8.1 expecting it to double-check you've done a backup or anything. It goes directly to downloading then installing.

I know I know, I'm talking to myself.
the hanging install on my HP ProLiant N40L microserver is down to the Atheros gigabit network chip - something goes wrong in the compatibility checker and it picks a generic driver that doesn't work with the quirked HP implementation, even though windows 8 works out of the box. It affects Server 2012 R2 as well, and both HP and MS have known about it since the Preview but apparently MS didn't care enough to fix the checker or, you know, not have hang bugs in their OS installer.

So if you've got one of those don't update to Windows 8.1 - unless you apply the current 'fix' which is to disable the onboard chip and add a pcie card.

Which in my case means also getting a dvi-VGA adapter so I can remove the low-profile VGA backing plate that is blocking the 1x slot.

Or wait for MS to fix it or not upgrade at all, but I want for the search and modern/start improvements.

My other machine and my work laptop both upgraded fine.

Had a 1955 burger from McD's yesterday. God, that was disgusting.
I don't remember them being that bad last time they did them.

To be fair, it's understandable that beef from 1955 tastes progressively worse over time.

It's a special burger from McDonald's.

No cheese = no sale.

Sooo... a burger then? Seems a bit pointless, especially without any cheese. Seriously, no cheese?

Guy attacks entertainer by shoving him off his plinth from behind, with a fairly hefty shove! Dude goes flying and lands on a kid.
The shover was egged on by his mate who was videoing him, who then posted the video on facebook it seems. Doh! The youtube video is a "do you know this person, contact police" video, and it seems from the comments that a lot of people do know them...

Would have been funnier if the predator dude had got up and then shot the guy through the back with a spear gun.

There does seem to be a type of blind spot common to a certain breed of fucking moron wherein they don't realise that the stuff they post on the internet to be seen by everyone can actually be seen by everyone.

Yep. That article is amazingly ... well I was going to come up with a fancy, pretentious put down, but we'll just go with "stupid".

Also, her comment that "most jobs don't require any skill, they just require you to turn up" is both (a) wrong and (b) simultaneously neatly demonstrated by the author.
