Is this yay or nay? I'm confused...

So we opened a gallery exhibition for a photographer today at the o'l Third Floor Gallery. He shoots for The New Yorker now and again and the says that they have a new big article up-coming that is all about the US Civil War reenactors... only unlike before this isn't in 'new photographers do olde worlde tin-types' but about full modern digital style, as if they were fighting now. He says its going to be raved about over there but the thing is that he's seen my stuff (one of the gallery organisers passed my website onto him) and he says my stuff is better, but that I've 'missed the boat' and that I've little hope of making it in the US critically with such a work given that somebody has just released their project covering the same stylistic ground. He says that he's sorry for me and that he wishes I'd beaten them to the punch as my stuff's better.

I'm a bit thrown by all this since I never saw this as beyond a 'time to do a personal project wahey this sounds fun sell a few books and make friends awesomo' type deal. We were both drunk during chatting but its strange considering that a guy whose work I respect thinks something of my stuff. The Third Floor Gallery dudes seem to like my gubbins as well. Maybe I should try making more noise...

Somebody else releases some work but yours is better? That sounds to me like you haven't missed the boat at all.

If anything, he's tested the waters for you and paved the way for your work. I think you should make as much noise as possible!

Where do you live / work? I'm in the process of putting together a business case for a freelance pool to help me out when things here hit the fan (which is a LOT) because they've given me an outright no to someone permanent.

Just seen this, sorry!

I'm in Fleetwood Lancashire (miles away) is that any use? I'd only be able to freelance from home evenings/weekends (as I do now) rather than travel down to work in-house.

I won a parking space outside reception with my own name plaque in the IT Mat hatter's raffle for Macmillans. It's a good thing as the staff car park is a long way away, which isn't the problem, but also really bumpy and badly laid, so it's really difficult to walk throuh in heels.

Also, people shall think that I am important and so shall be extra nice to me (maybe).

The Gigantic Robot Brain at the centre of Amazon decided it was going to promote the Kindle edition of one of my sister's novels the other day. Boosted her up in to the top 5 Bestsellers List! Who knows how it chose a 3 year old romance novel, but never mind!

Here it be!

Does she get any compensation for that, or does it all go to the publisher?
