Uh. Not a clamshell design. 2D, obviously. Same size screens as the original 3DS (although apparently it's all one screen, obscured by the plastic frame).

Yes, yes, apparently it's "for kids". Have Nintendo finally sailed off the edge of the world? Or is this AMAZING?

Err, what is it for that any of the previous smaller models aren't for?

It also looks very unlike you would be able to use those rhs buttons for very long. They are in completely the wrong place.

Is that real? Isn't it just a normal DS without a hinge, to encourage scratches?

It's a toy for the kiddies to play pokemon on.

But just imagine the size of the circle pad pro that will need to go with it.

It looks like it might actually be more comfortable than the normal ones. I'd have probably swapped me XL if it had the same sized screens.

How would you use the trigger and the left d-pad at the same time? From the look of this you need about 4 hands to play it!

Nah, the stick and buttons have moved closer to the top and it's smaller than a regular 3DS remember.

Mind you, looking again, you'd be fucked if you were using the D-Pad in a game and wanted to press the left shoulder.

yeah, that's what I meant, and if you are using the trigger buttons I cant really see an easy way that you could hold it. You would need to compress it between your hands to hold it in place (unless there are grips on the back) and that would get tiring quickly.

Wait, what? Thumb on d-pad and index finger on trigger just like any control pad and all the previous DS incarnations. What am I missing here?

I think you're getting the dimensions slightly confused - the thing is tiny compared to the 3ds xl. Looking at the picture of it next to the xl, the controls look pretty similarly placed, certainly not enough difference to cause any real issues.

Not that I've ever found any handheld comfortable, but it should be no less so than the xl.

Hmmm. It'll be £150 with Pokemon, I bet, which is a psychologically significant price point. And young kids like Pokemon. And young kids break the hinge on the DS/3DS/etc. and young kids aren't supposed to use the 3d on the 3DS for some reason I forget. It gives young eyes eye cancer or something.

Hmmm. This might just barely be smarter than it looks.

Interesting take on Wired, that this is about ditching an expensive and ultimately not-very-popular custom-made 3d screen to cut costs and get the sales moving. And that we could see the same fate befall the WiiU's game pad screen.

Doubtful. There's no game that can't be played 2d (Indeed, I keep the 3d off as it hurts my eyes). The same cannot be said for the screen on the wiiu pad.

I don't know about you, but when I am holding a handhled, like the DS or a Vita, I rest the bottom on the lower palm of my hand, like you do with a normal controller. That isn't possible with the dimensions of that, whilst simultaneously using the control buttons and also using the trigger.

They removed the hinge so that they cut cut costs by using one big screen instead of two smaller screens (and also save the cost of the hinge).

This means that they have a "thing that plays the new pokemon" on the shelves for £110 over christmas.

They'll sell thousands and thousands of them.

It's for kids.

I think it's ugly as hell, and I would never own one, but Nintendo know what they are doing.

Has anyone given a shit about Pokeman since 1998? Thought they were the usual one Christmas fad.

The 2ds comes in red and blue.

The logos for pokemon x & y are red and blue.

They are both coming out on the same day.

According to Wikipedia they've sold 200 million units as of July 2010.

That makes it the best selling game series ever.

That's a bit of an exaggeration, they have lots of profitable series, Wii Fit made them so much fucking money, it was even outselling the PS3 in Japan for quite a long time, Animal Crossing does huge numbers (the only Nintendo game I don't really get), the NSMB games sell extraordinarily well and cost hardly anything to make, Mario Kart always sells well, the Smash Brothers games regularly do 10 million plus.

Fair point, but I do remember a time when Pokemon first came out and gave Nintendo a massive boost. This was just after the Gamecube hadn't sold that well and the competition was heating up.

They had this console called the Wii and this other console called the DS since then, which were two of the most successful consoles ever made.

I would argue that they wouldn't have been able to afford the Wii if Pokemon hadn't done so well but it's a moot point as the facts speak for themselves. They're doing well and long may it continue!
