Listening now...first impressions, Lewie, your voice quality seems a little low, the other guys is pretty good. Also, I'd prefer the show notes to be hidden away before I listen to the podcast so I don't know what's coming up before I hear it.

Other than that, nice potential fella, nice to have a good UK-centric podcast out there, and I'll surely listen to Episode 1 (this one was zero, right?).

Yep, whilst we are testing the waters, we didn't want to call it episode 1.

Also, I should have said in the post, there was a problem with my mic, should be fixed by next week.

Are you planning on doing variable length shows? Or "We'll bloody well fill an hour wether we have anything to talk about or not!" ones?

It was quite listenable, I thought, even kept my attention when I came home last night. Not bad at all, especially for a first try.

Oooh I know what else it needs, it's own RSS feed so I can add it to my auto-download list! At the mo it appears in your standard feed and my players can't find a "podcast" in there, I think it needs to be in it's own list or something.

Yep, we are working on an RSS feed and an iTunes thingy (aparently lots of people use iTunes for podcasts)

Length wise, I really want to keep it under an hour. I think we definitely won't ever have problems having enough interesting stuff to talk about, but we will have the opposite problem.

I think we are going to do less news, but cover each story in more detail. If it degenerated into us just reading out kotaku that would be awful, since everyone can do that themselves. I say 3/4 big news stories, preferably with some relation to stuff in the UK, bargains, or consumer side news and provide a slightly more in depth commentry on them.

Also, the next one won't just be an hour of the two of us talking, we're coming up with some features too, just to mix it up a little.

Sounds good!

Just out of interest? How are you guys doing this? Is it a recorded Skype session or something? You guys aren't in the same room, right?

That's right, we're both talking on skype, and recording ourselves in Audacity, I then send him the recording of me, and he mixes them together.

Needs more jingles. And accidental outings of gay games industry people.

Heh, my friend (who is in a band) is currently working on jingles, I might put together something (awful) on my new Korg DS-10 (expect a review in the next few days)

Also, I don't know anyone who is gay in the games industry, although I suppose that doesn't have to stop us.

It's totally bad ass that you are doing this Mr P but you asked for criticism - so I'm gona give it!

Firstly an hour is too long I think. I'm not a big fan of podcasts, to begin with, but even stuff like Herring and Collings stretches long at an hour, so I would try to keep it to 30 mins (or less) especially if it is weekly. You want people wanting more at the end rather than slogging through it. That and it would force you to think about what you're covering a little more.

Secondly, yeah, don't cover in such detail what your podcast is about - some detail to tempt but not a minute by minute break down.

Thirdly, don't be afraid to edit it, if you lose the trail for a bit.

But yeah, thats all stuff that comes with practise, and I don't know shit about podcasts, but still my 2p. I think this is one of those things you can only get good at by doing em.

Good luck! I'll be listening.

Cheers man, I think 30 mins is a bit too short, but we are going to make it shorter. We've now made it so the notes don't show up unless you highlight it, in case you want a surprise, I think we'll also include a very brief run down of the topics covered. I think we'll come up with a code word for "I need a minute to collect my thoughts", heh.

The SavyGamer RSS feed is now compatible with podcatchers, which (so Willeth tells me) means that you can add it to whatever podcast software you use, like Juice or iTunes, and it will download it automatically whenever we put up a new one.

We are still working on getting it added to iTunes Music Store.

Still plenty of time to enter the naming competition too!

I think 30 minutes is an optimal length if you're going to keep the current format of two people having a chat. If you add features, yes an hour ish can be fine but just two people chatting (Discussing you mean.. ) then it's got to be short.

Savvylon?

Damnit I was going to think of more but all I want to do now is set up a rival site only reporting bargains on games like "Little Britain" and "Fifa 08" just so I can call it "Chavvy Gamer"

If things go according to plan, I should have a pretty exciting interview on this Fridays podcast.

That, and my Mum will be on it.

Thought I'd give some feedback about this. I really liked it.

I think the 45-60minute format is the best for podcasts. I liked the in depth stuff and it's great to hear some UK voices in a gaming podcast for a change. Keep it up.

As a side note, Banshee did pick up the new podcast all by itself and downloaded me a copy. The RSS works.

I listened to episode 1 in the small hours last night. I felt it did seem to slow down and dwell on discussion that had already been said in places, but otherwise a good effort, particularly for a 'launch' episode.
And a recommendation... more LewieP, less Willeth please... he does seem to dominate!

This weeks was a little disjointed in the recording process, since we didn't actually have the Jonathan Blow interview, we kept having to stop and start to record two versions of lots of things, next week will flow much better.

Heh, WIlleth is much more professional and organised than I could ever be, but I will work on having more to say :D

Seriously though, Dr Seuess (sp?) taught me how to be a decent human being, and The Sneeches was always my favorite of his stories.

Why thank you, I do try. I was a little concerned that the jokes I make wouldn't transfer to the podcast format.
SkyKid wrote:

We spoke about it afterwards, I think his main concerns are that
1. It is a bit of a gimmick, he's pretty serious about the podcast (which is a really positive thing, he basically organises it, so all I have to do is turn up sober and plug my headset in, and I organise interviews), but he wants to be taken seriously.
2. He is really concerned that we don't just appeal to the PA crowd, and in doing so alienate everyone else. SavyGamer started off as a thread on the Penny-Arcade forums, and a lot of my readers are from there (about 20% now), and if you haven't been following #post4303746" class="postlink">my mums posts, I can see why it wouldn't be funny. Let us know what you think, post in the comments for the podcast post, and say whether you want my Mums segment to be a regular feature or not.
