So, there is still a bit of debate going on in my house about which next gen console to buy. The people we will have available to play online with will have a bit of bearing on this decision. Select a poll option, and post in the thread what you've chosen.

PS4 pre-ordered. I am absolutely not touching the Xbox One as long as it comes with a spy camera. And I say that as someone who genuinely views the Xbox 360 as the greatest console ever released. Well, until the last couple of years when it has morphed into an unusable mess.

Since I only just got a SNES I was considering an N64.

Primarily PC gamer, but I've got a Wii U and will be getting a PS4, mostly likely in the first year.

I don't really like multiplayer games much though, so it shouldn't affect anyone else what I do!

I will buy what BEEX dictates at a point when the price isn't silly.

The problem I have is that all of the reasons that worked on my girlfriend for the Xbox being such a poor choice next gen seem to have been addressed. Even the kinect issue, haven't they u-turned on that as well and now say you can use the console with it unplugged?
I'd rather get the ps4 because I'm annoyed at the way Microsoft have acted and I've got a lot of goodwill toward ps+ but I'm currently not winning this argument.

It's concerning how much WTB and I agree on these days.

-edit- the 180s have changed things slightly, but only from 'I will never buy one' to 'I will get one in 2018 for the exclusives'. The PS4 will be my main console.

My current attempt at a compromise is Xbox One on release followed by PS4 a year later, so as I can get The Division on PS4 for the multiplayer. But that's not particularly a budget friendly solution, especially when I suspect we won't be able to play splitscreen online...

If 'the bezzies will have PS4s' won't win the argument, I'm not sure what will.

I suspect it will be a huge help, but I also suspect she doesn't entirely believe me when I tell her that. Everyone who votes, post in the thread your choice! You can vote undecided and change it later so you can see the results if you want.

The problem is that they're still committed to this core way of thinking. Phil Harrison's keynote speech at GamesCom showed this. What's to stop them reimplementing the policies that everyone hated once they have a massive install base?

I just don't trust that they have the consumer in mind with their new console at all. I know that Sony is also a business, but they have seemed to realise that the way to make money is to treat their customers with a modicum of respect.

Unless you really really really like the MS published games that will remain exclusive, I can't see a single meaningful advantage for the Xbox One over the PS4.

I guess lots of people like Halo, Gears of War, Fable and Forza, but I certainly wouldn't miss them too much, and they all have multiplatform/Sony equivalents.

Even without all the utterly horrible decisions MS has been making (and then backtracking on), price would be enough of a factor to swing me towards the PS4.

I'm getting a PS4, although I can't say with 100% certainty that it will be within the first year. Depends on the games.

Although its been a while since I've been regularly on with SDG and HYW that might be more down to whats available for online play.

Lewie - as for not playing multiplayer even having a scoreboard that has your friends in it and that is changing can help bring new challenges (see Pacman CE / Geometry Wars / Trials)

I've put 'undecided' right now although I'm much more on the PS4 side that could still change and I'm not interested in one on launch day at the moment and i'm trying to make sure i have at least the main things I want to play available to me on the PC.

You will also have time to switch after the launch (for the last gen I had a PS3 for around 6 months before I got a 360) so dont feel you'll be trapped in one camp or the other

One terrible factor for this will be the time locked exclusives for stuff that you really want - I know you both play COD and having the new maps locked out for a month might be a big enough incentive to make you at least pick it up on there and Microsoft may well do the same for other things which you really want to play straight away (if next years COD has a Zombies Treyarch release and *does not* come to the 360 then i'll probably pick up a one just to play that when the maps come out rather than wait on PS4 and PC)

95% of modern games are shit*. It's the question of which console has the 5% of good games and which console has BEEX action on it.

I don't remember hearing that you can use the Xbone without Kinect plugged in. Source?

That's their only excuse for forcing people to buy one bundled in, isn't it?

I'm completely burned out with Gears of Bore and Halo now. Forza, meh, Gran Turismo is just as good. Fable? Pff!

It was their last 180 before Gamescom

http://uk.ign.com/articles/2013/08/12/x ... o-function

Quote:
Xbox One No Longer Requires Kinect to Function
All core features will be available regardless of whether the sensor is connected.

There was a line of thinking that it would allow them then to remove Kinect from the box and sell it afterwards to get the price down closer to the PS4 but it seems they went with the free Fifa game instead.

Gamerscore and cheevos, I can't argue with if you're into that. I'm happy to abandon mine. It's quite liberating, really. (STEAM BADGES. I NEED STEAM BADGES. GIVE ME THE STEAM BADGE CRACK.)

As for party chat, that'll be on PS4. The PS4 controllers look pretty sorted now as well. Bigger, with proper triggers.

The dashboard familiarity thing has to be a joke, right? They change it every year any way!

That's good news, but more fool them for sticking with the bundle. I'm not paying an extra £100 for a spy camera I won't use.

Source.

They say that the reason it is still bundled with every console is that they want developers to be able to assume everyone has one. I don't totally buy it, because as mentioned, any game that isn't primarilly using Kinect will function without it (only losing guff like voice commands), but there's at least some truth to it.

So cross-platform games on Xbone will have shoehorned Kinect rubbish! Even more reason to avoid it.

There must be developers working on games now who have been promised the Kinect would be included with all consoles and who would sue Microsoft if they change that.

That's an interesting point. Or maybe MS themselves have some Kinect games in the works that they've spunked a lot of development money on.

On Party Chat, unless I'm mistaken, it's free on PS4, but it's only for Xbox Live Gold Subscribers on Xbox One. Not much of a factor if you're going to be paying to play online on either console anyway, unless there are people you want to chat with that won't be.

Its probably more the way the original PS3 dashboard was 'okay' if all you wanted to do was watch a film or play a game but when you wanted something more it could be confusing and the original Blades interface was much easier to work your way around

You also have the fact that for the PS3 vs Xbox if all you wanted to do was play a game , you just put the disk in the Xbox but the PS3 often had to run through installs and patches and updates and everything else which made it a much worse experience on there compared with the Xbox and I'm sure theres also a bit of 'fear of the unknown' there as well.

For the list

Quote:
Gamerscore
Achievements
Party chat
Controller
Familiarity with dashboard
'I don't like the ps'
'It'll just be rubbish like the last one'
'Trophies are stupid'

Gamerscore / Achivements vs Trophies is one I understand but dont care about - and if your not familiar with how trophies work they do take a bit more explaining than achievements (platinum vs 1000 points) but thats just down to personal preference I think

Party chat has been confirmed for the PS4 http://www.playstationlifestyle.net/201 ... 0-friends/

From everything i've heard the controllers are comparable - however remember the Xbox One controller will be 'different' to the 360 although if this really is a problem I'll bet someone will have converters out there (you can get ones now to allow you to use 360 pads on the PS3)

The Playstation Store is *much* better than when it was at launch but its not as smooth as the Xbox store and thats even taking into consideration how much Microsoft has done to break and hide things in there - I would not really expect any difference between the two

No doubt the PS4 will have some version of all the online social stuff the Xbox does because it's well known the PS3 isn't as good at that stuff and Sony won't let that one go unfixed. It's probably even been confirmed already how rich that stuff will be in the PS4 but I've ignored it all due to hating people.

The dashboard thing is a weird thing to care about. Not only because, as WTB notes, it's constantly changing on the 360 anyway but both new consoles will have a redesigned UI. So she's favouring one console for a UI it almost certainly won't have vs another consoles for a UI she hasn't seen yet.

The controller is a potentially fair objection because the 360 pad is great and the PS3 pad really isn't. The PS4 controller is massively improved though by all accounts so you might just need to wait until it's released and get her a shot on one to see if she's happy with it.

The last three there are impossible to address in any meaningful way because, as you say, they're pretty much nonsense.

I'll buy fuck all until the prices drop considerably. I've got Dorf Fortress and upcoming Elite to keep me occupied until doomsday, so feel no need to rush into getting fucked over by early adoption syndrome. Some people still actually believe GRAW was anything other than a bag of wank.

Being absolutely drained and fucked off by multiplayer I feel no need to follow herds any more. That itch has been scratched down to the bone. Might get a WiiU when a new Mario comes out. Just to enjoy joyful games again.

I agree with Dimrill.. except for the swearing.. and the GRAW stuff. I'm not sure of what that is?

Anyway, I've got tons of stuff to play and not enough time to play it as it is. I need to get through some of my back log first.

But anyway, if I do get a new console, I honestly don't think I could do without Halo and my Gamerpoints.

I've voted for the PS4, mostly for reasons that others have gone into here and in other threads - namely PS+ being excellent, Microsoft totally messing up in recent months, etc etc. I very much doubt the PS4 will be purchased until next year though, as I'll prefer to see all these things settle down and hear how other people are getting on with theirs.

I really love my 360 and I certainly will miss the Cheevos I think, but perhaps not in any massively significant way.

I'll also miss the Fable games as I do right enjoy those, still I won't rule out getting an Xbox One in a couple of years or something.

Indeed, I can imagine PS+ being a primary motivation behind choosing a PS4.

But I can't be doing with the period post launch but before there's any bulk of non launch titles.

PS4 on launch day. No current plans for an Xbone. Might consider it after a price drop but currently unlikely.

We're presuming that PS+ will continue as it has with the free games. Don't forget, there won't be any full price games to give away for the first couple of months as they'll all be in the stores.

They have said Drive club PS+ edition , which may be cut down or might be the full game - not confirmed yet

Oh and I like that after Microsoft gave aware Ass crud II (from 2009) PS+ are giving away Ass Crud III from October last year as one of their next titles.

Part of Sony's strategy of signing so many indie games is no doubt to help bulk out their PS+ offerings.

I suspect what they're going to do is put more and more PS3/PS4/PS Vita crossbuy games out on PS+, as well as PS4 only games, which means that anyone who is just subscribing for PS3 games suddenly find themselves getting a load of PS4/PS Vita games too. Makes deciding between a PS4 or an Xbox One much easier.

It was really impressive to see the list of things at Gamecom which were coming to PS3/PS4/PS Vita , it might be a bit late but if they do it right they could see a lot more Vita sales - and again it will be because those people with PS+ will already have dozens of games waiting for them if they just pick up the console.

And with the Vita price drop, that is getting sorely tempting, too.

Obviously full backwards compatibility would be better, but we're already seeing things like Flower getting a PS4 port, I wouldn't be too surprised if quite a few popular PSN games get PS4 rereleases (hopefully at no additional charge), and stuff like the various HD collections of PS2 games would be quite nice to have too.

The first new home computer game I'll have bought since buying the PC version of the first GTA 3D game.

Whisper it but it might well be that I end up getting none of the consoles and just gaming on a PC instead. After all I already have a dedicated emulators box.

Ive pre'd the PS4 since some weeks ago
I think at some point I'll end up owning both, but for now I could give less of a shit for titles in the Halo, Gears of War, Fable and Forza lines, and the multiplatform shit will be fairly equal this gen it seems (unlike the many months it took to get parity between ps3 and 360 on multiplatform releases). Added to that, I dont like the Kinect thing, I dont want all the bells and whistles regards NOT actually playing games.

I want a games console primarily, and the puss four should be a good one.
I dont play online hardly ever now, so gamertags and cheevos are less of a bother than they once were.

I cant see my wanting the bone for a good long while

and if the puss turns out to be a lemon, plenty of ebay potential in the first month id wager...

:insincere:

Lets me fair, you won't just get Halo, Gears of War, Fable and Forza you'll also be getting Titanfall, Dead Rising and, um, Ryse. Ok, so not the best example, but the point is we'll see new IP springing up from both camps so it's perhaps too early to write off either machine because of their previous flagship games. The next gen is bound to have new flagship titles. Like Ryse.

(Seriously, what the hell is Ryse? Some Roman solider God of War game?)
