The wife's phone continues to nosedive towards extinction.

At the moment the touchscreen has gone wonky. It often thinks that you have touched it when you haven't (:hat:) and there is a large patch that doesn't respond to being touched at all.

Is there anything that can be done about this, does anyone know? Or is it dead?

If it needs to be replaced with a new phone, are there any good deals on iPhones? When is the new one likely to come out?

You can reset the screen (through some weird combination of switching it on and off) but the best answer is going to be to take it into a genius bar and let an apple person take a look at it

** edit - heres the page on resetting touch sensitivity - probably wont make any difference but worth a try at least

What model is it? 3GS is an easy screen swap. 4 and newer is a pain.

It took me an hour to do a 4s recently. Not too tricky, just very slow

So that whole thread about which new phone to get her was a complete waste of time?

Not at all.

We took Doctor Richard Gaywood's advice of waiting for the new iPhone.

Unfortunately, the phone has gone batshit mental in the meantime.

I've got a 3GS or a Samsung S3 she can have a borrow of if she wants.

3GS might be locked to Orange, though.

Thanks for the advice. I'll try the reset thing. I got a little water under the screen a while back and there's a water mark. A friend reckons it might be related to that as a few months after her screen got wet, it went kaput too.

Hoping the wait for new iPHone's isn't too long. I could use Onóra's iPhone (3s filled with games and cartoons) in the meantime, but will the simcard fit?

Hang on, wasn't one of the stipulations 'not a new iPhone as I want to save money', before you decided on getting a 4S?

Yes, but women.

Also, the 5 will drop in price when the 5S drops, if indeed it ever does.

A few days later I could see. A few months later strikes me as very unlikely though.

No, IIRC the iPhone 3G/3GS needs mini-SIMs while the 4/4S takes micro-SIMs. But you can get a little plastic adapter for pennies that'll make it fit.

Go into your phone shop and they'll probably give you an adaptor for free.

Thought I'd update you all on my woes. I got an adapater and transferred my SIM across, only for my backup phone to completely fail to work for large periods of time the past 2 days (screen goes black, phone switches off). My work phone doesn't recieve a signal and IT department are slow getting back to me about a replacement. Realised during a home visit today that I'm totally cut off from the world should a crisis situation arise (I've had a knife pulled on a visit once and occassionally have to arrange hospital admissions from client's homes).

So, I'll be ringing 02 and asking for an upgrade to an iPhone 5 later tonight. Any tips on how to get the best deals? The new ones should be out in a month and prices for the 5 should be going down then, but will that help me now?

I absolutely hate being without my phone. Never knew just how much I rely on it. Was lost for a half hour looking for a client's address today as I didn't have google maps! Never should have chucked out my old A-Z.

I did it! I haggled! Did the online chat thing with an advisor, dithered for ages and ended up with deal £160 cheaper over the life of the contract than their best deal online. Will be picking up a 32GB iPhone on Saturday. Now I can have both music and photos on my phone all at the same time (one day I'll figure out storing smaller files, but it doesn't need to be now). Hehe
