:this: x a million. Jaw dropping letter. You wonder just how one of the worlds greatest sportsman came to write to the letters page of the Radio Times! Fake? Did someone who was mates with Ali see the mentioned article, get pissed off and get Ali to write a defence? Fascinating either way.

The Doctor casting hasn't been finalised. Moffat found Noel Edmonds' Whirly Wheel during the TV Centre clearout and the shortlist is on it.

Doctor Who: read the fan letter bookies' favourite Peter Capaldi wrote to Radio Times aged 15

If the Thick of It star and avid Who fan really is in the frame to replace Matt Smith, he'll find it very difficult to say no...

Yesterday, Peter Capaldi's name entered the frame as the 2-1 favourite to play the next Doctor, the 12th or possibly 13th Doctor (depending on how we'll factor John Hurt's incarnation into the official sequence).

How likely is such a high-profile casting? Despite Steven Moffat's wish for an older Time Lord, the former The Thick of It star's availability and how much dosh such a top-drawer actor might cost the BBC, the most important factor that could swing it is that – like David Tennant before him – Peter Capaldi is a Doctor Who fan. And I mean a HUGE Doctor Who fan.

He was a key figure in the world of fandom in the 1970s, even pre-dating the formation of DWAS (the Doctor Who Appreciation Society) in 1976. Aged 15, he pinned his colours to the mast in this letter published in Radio Times in February 1974.

http://www.radiotimes.com/uploads/image ... 34582.jpeg

Earlier this year I met Capaldi on the set of An Adventure in Space and Time, the forthcoming drama about Doctor Who's inception. He is friends with Mark Gatiss and had taken time out of his schedule to visit the studios in Wimbledon. We chatted briefly while watching scenes being filmed on, let's just say, a historical setting, and on the lovingly recreated Tardis set. We were both thrilled at what we saw and I could see then that he remains as big a fan today as he was four decades ago.

If Peter Capaldi's name truly is in the frame and he's offered the part, surely he'd find it irresistible.

He calls himself a fan? He called The Doctor "Dr Who" FFS!

There's a frankly astonishing story knocking around at the moment that when Mark Thompson got wind that Michael Grade was going to be made DG, he tried to cancel the new series of Doctor Who. It was only other executives standing up to the spineless streak of shit that it wasn't abandoned ahead of the 2005 re-launch.

I'd be really disappointed if the 12th Doctor is who it's now heavily rumoured to be, simply because that would mean we've been spoilered already. Seems a bit too much like back in 2005 when swathes of the media were claiming that Bill Nighy was definitely going to be the Doctor before Christopher Ecclescake. The Matt Smith reveal was a genuine surprise, and as a viewer, I just want to be surprised again.

If there was a way I could not find out who the new who was until it happened in the show, I'd do it!

I didn't even want to know there was going to be a regeneration...

I'm really disappointed. For that reason! I wanted to be shocked, not have a media rumour verified.

Having only ever seen him play one character, I have no idea what he'll be like as Doctor Who, therefore I cannot possibly comment on this casting decision.

He looked a bit scared by it all on TV.

No idea how it will turn out, but I'm glad that he'll be older and a bit different to Smith (and Tennant).

Did you know that when Patrick Troughton was cast as the 2nd Doctor they seriously considered having him play the character "blacked up".

Given that the exact same thing happened when John Hurt was revealed as The Doctor, that's not exactly a surprise.

Agreed , and I'm really looking forward to the new doctor and what he can bring - I think one of the key parts was Moffats almost final words in that reveal thing which was 'Not Matt Smith' , so we dont have someone doing the same thing we have someone who looks and acts totally different but underneath it all is still "The Doctor"

It's kinda funny - They all are saying 'AN OLD PERSON SHOULD NEVER PLAY THE DOCTOR' when in the Classic Who (almost) all of the actors were in their late 40 or early-to-mid 50's when they stepped into the TARDIS.

The kids are all saying that because they've never known an 'old' Doctor.

Capaldi is the same age as Hartnell was when he was first cast, but Hartnell seemed a LOT older than that.

Peter Capaldi might be my favourite actor of all time, but for things like Local Hero rather than The Thick Of It, which I thought was a tad over-done.

So anyway, I'll have to watch fucking doctor who now :(
