I was going to put this in the gay marriage thread, but decided it wasn't suitable

Homophobia in Russia has been growing under a state accepted (almost sponsored) manner since the gov't realised it needed the Orthodox church(es money/land/voters). They have just passed a gay propaganda law which can mean jail time for "promoting homosexuality to a minor"; a rather vague "crime": http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree ... propaganda

Here are photos of the gay pride rallies and a few other events disturbing images in here

Russia is hosting the 2014 winter Olympics (remind me what the Olympics is about again, oh yeah, money; a budget of $12bn, $50bn spent).

Furthermore they are hosting the 2018 football world cup, a trophy which is all about anti-racism, Russia with its fine record in that department.

It is disgusting that these things appear to be state accepted, there is very little comeback for the people who perform these attacks, the view of the police seems to be, "the gays are asking for it". Strangely* reminiscent of Putin's responseto the arrest and imprisonment of the Pussy Riot band members.

*not so strangely

From that article I also learned that Britain did a similar thing in 1988!! WTF? People are fucking idiots.

Without wanting to downplay those photos, I'm fairly sure that turning a blind eye to China hosting the Olympics was leaps and bounds worse.

Qatar, the hosts of the 2022 World Cup, is hardly a shining beacon of tolerance and freedom either.
