That link will tell the story better than I can since I'm on my phone but in a nutshell... Amazon are making available digital versions of any album* that you've bought from them since 1999.

*As long as the album has been licensed for the autorip service. They claim that 350,000 albums are already available which may seem a lot, but it is spread over nearly 15 years of music so don't expect everything to be on there.

It found ten albums, three of which were gifts I didn't care about, the other seven of which are already ripped in my iTunes library (in higher quality).

Could have been handy (if it found a CD I'd neglected to rip).

That's rather excellent...quite a few gifts for others included but even so it's a pretty cool thingy to offer.

11 albums for me, 2 of which were presents but to be fair, I don't buy many CDs.

Also.. I was just browsing through this when the MD walked through the building. The only time he comes here, and I'm looking on Amazon.

57 songs. Mostly Country. No Western. Fuck western.

Which is also the name of my Kenny Rodgers cover band.

Sometime later another 9 albums appeared, all from presents bought for other people.

It is nice of amazon to give me free music. Even if some of it is... not to my tastes.

I was going to say how useless this is for me, until I read the article and found it includes vinyl as well. This may mean I stop buying two copies of some albums now.

Hooray, I bought Beck's Guerolito from Amazon! The CD is beyond ruined, for a reason I never managed to reason, so I can download the MP3, add it to iTunes and Match* will give me a 256kbps AAC! And QOTSA Songs for the Deaf, which I keep forgetting to rip after it was in the car when I ripped everything last time and I've never got round to it since!

* Yes, this bellend forgot - after raging against his 'after a hard drive crash it deleted everything out of iCloud and got a 'well keep a backup then' response from Apple instead of it behaving like the online backup it pretends to be' experience - forgot to cancel in time to avoid this year's charge.

Luckily you can delete stuff. I didn't really want the Michael Buble album I bought my mum on there.

Interesting legal issues around this. The accepted wisdom has always really been if you've got the CD, you can rip a digital copy. But if I've bought a CD for someone else, who has the right to a digital copy? Amazon autorip suggests it's me, rather than the person who possesses the CD.

If you pay for it, why can't you rip the disc? Before you give the gift to them, it's yours, and Amazon is the point of sale.

May be morally dubious, but it's legal.

That's my point though. Owning the disc is surely what gives you the right to own the ripped tracks. If you then give the disc to someone else, you're in theory giving up your right to keep those tracks. It's even more obviously the case when amazon ship it directly to the recipient.

Yep. People at work have ripped their collections then bunged them on eBay ot music magpie - surely you're selling on the license with the physical.copy, when you buy a cd you don't get the right to RElicence
that would be madness. Yet there doesn't seem to be any stink from the publishers about it

Instead of getting rid of all my CDs after finishing ripping them, I stuck them in the loft. Totally pointless, but morally just feels the right thing to do.

CDs are shite, transitory media bridging the physical and digital age, with neither the joy of owning like vinyl or the convenience of digital.

I quite like CDs, unlike the fellow above. They're not as conveient as electronic files, and aren't as nice to own physically as records, but they're fine being inbetween. I'm not sure how that makes them shite.

I like looking at a bunch of Island CDs kept together - spine reading is way more satisfying with CD than LP. Unless you only buy insanely poshly packaged vinyl.

When I retired the cd player, both music purchases and listening fell off a cliff, despite now being supposedly more convenient.

I can't help but feel that there's a correlation there.

This has happened to me too. For me and my collecting nature, I miss having a tangible product to hold and sometimes to show off with.

As with, I'm sure, many people, iTunes may have made buying music more covenient for me but rather single tracks that I already knew and significantly reduced my discovery of new music. Spotify has subsequently recovered my variety of experience, but at the cost of never ever buying any music.

I feel a little sorry that iTunes radio is highly likely to destroy spotify as a company with its lower cost and wider playlist.

y'know, I almost never buy tracks from iTunes - if I don't want the whole album, I don't buy any if it. I expect that is weird.

There are exceptions - Somewhere in my Heart, Groove is in the Heart, Street Tuff, Cantaloop - things I like outside of the artist, usually things from childhood before I could afford music.

I had a big dip in buying and seeking out new music somewhere between 2004 - 2010 and thought I'd lost interest in music altogether, but the last three years I've been back with a vengeance.

I also worry for the longevity of CDs. No matter how well you keep them, I've got a few early pressings that simply do not work in CD players anymore. I have records from the 60s that still work fine (albeit with a bit of crackle). Once CDs start skipping they are essentially toast.

The only CDs I've had skip were because of laser issues in the player. Some are a bit scratched, but for some reason when I rip them, they work. It's odd. I guess a rip does more data checking than playing it on the fly?

A rip doesn't have to be at full speed, so it can slow down and have a couple of passes at the same bit of track.

Yes, any dodgy CDs I've had I've had no problem ripping. Solves the problem as I never have had to take it out of its case again.

My copy of Guerolito is way too fucked to rip, even at 1x with error correction on. One of the classic rock compilations I bought from Sainsburys for a tenner has a manufacturing issue on one track that prevents it ripping cleanly, too.
