I would not be using my car as a physical barrier for gypsys.

If it was my car I'd be thinking the same. Fortunately the majority of cars here are company cars! ;)

Mimi can tell the story better than I can, but she remembers a time when some travellers moved in near her mother's place, and they used diggers to pile up great mounds of dirt around their squat to keep anyone else out.

Eventually the council built them all houses for free.

Non judgementally of anyone here: It has always struck me as a bit odd that it's seemingly acceptable to discriminate against gypsies, but not other racial groups.

It's not acceptable, it's just easier to look down your nose at them when a horde descends.

I don't necessarily think they're discriminated against because they're gypsies, but more because they're (generally, not always) twats that encroach on land that they have no right to be on and put up a massive fuss when asked to leave, get violent and often cause a surge in crime in the local area.

I'm sure if other racial groups did similar things, they'd face similar ire.

Didn't we have a gypsy or traveler that posted here for a while? They were pretty argumentative if I remember.

I think it was his wife was of Romany descent or something, but yeah, they didn't seem to understand that people don't like other people when they break the law.

Well, you know what I mean. Anecdotally the stereotype certainly matches the experiences I've had with travellers.

And it's certainly nothing to do with race.

Other than the Irish travellers, and all the ones who aren't from Romany or Irish descent.

s9(1) Equality Act2010. To refresh his memory: race includes colour, nationality, ethnic or national origins, and the travelling community (gypsies, Irish Travellers and Roma, at the least) can be considered a race through traditions, practices and other aspects of their society that differs significantly from the status quo.

That's not what section 9 says (http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2010/15/section/9), so where are you getting the definition of race from?

How can "Irish Travellers" be a separate race from "Irish", anyway? Unless you're implying something unsavoury about their breeding stock.

From case law from the RRA, if memory serves.

**Gypsy update**

There's now 11 vehicles blocking our entrance way made up of vans and cars. The Gypsys are hanging around saying that they'll just come back at night.

We all think that the reason why they're here is because there's a massive printing press out the back of the office as we used to print the newspaper here. It's in the process of being dismantled at the moment and there's big trucks of scrap metal leaving regularly throughout the day.

Send an anonymous phonecall that unless there's several drive-bys by the police tonight, they might miss the massive knife fight that some nameless people have promised the gypsies.
