So, what do we think is coming this year?

I'm interested in iOS7, but mainly from a curiosity perspective, as I have moved to Android for my mobile needs. I'm not against moving back to Apple, but there would have to be a significant change in approach from Apple to get me back.

I'm hoping for some laptop updates, as my lease is up in september for my work laptop, so it'll be new toy time :) My choice is between a 13" air or a 15" pro (we don't do the 13" pro for some crazy reason) at the moment.

AppleTV updates would be interesting, but i'm not going to buy anything from Apple for that.

Looking forward to seeing some info on iOS7 - Shame they are not showing it live unless you have a Mac or Apple TV.

Same predictions as Chinny, i.e. a new OS X (if it's even called that), new Mac Pro announced, etc. Plus the shock phasing out of a long-running Apple product.

What's the point of a workstation that you can't upgrade and has to have a load of cables dangling everywhere if you want to add more storage?

Since I got my Pro I've added a Quadro video card, more RAM and gone through countless disk upgrades as any video editor would.

You'd end up needing some kind of NAS setup running over Thunderbolt if you are a video editor. So more cables, more power required, etc etc.

I can see how you can drop most of the card slots if you have Thunderbolt. But I would have thought a graphics slot, upgradable RAM and 4 hard drive bays would have been sensible.

Why? Too powerful? Too much of a rip-off if you ask them to upgrade bits?

I've only seen a couple of pictures of the new iOS UI but fair play them it's very pretty; certainly a massive improvement on the horribly dated stylings it's been saddled with for the last few years with the faux-3d buttons and whatnot.

Image

The new Mac Pro I'm not so keen on. It's got the feel of a home appliance about it and I wouldn't have batted an eyelid if I'd seen the same design in a new Dyson advert or whatever:

No. Europe doesn't like the fact that people could get their fingers caught in the fans apparently.

They would have shat themselves over the fan I had on my Cyrix 150 overclocked to 166. Would have had your arm off!

I love the new Mac Pro.

It'll be about 4k though and I don't need one.

I'd imagine the entire thing is built around an air-cooled core. It's all designed to be as small as possible within the limitations of having a powerful chipset.

I personally wonder what the cost will be considering adding storage is suddenly going to be waaaay more expensive. No longer will it be possible just to slot in a 60 quid SATA hard drive into one of the bays.

Loss of the Superdrives is no huge issue as I now nearly always use my external Blu-Ray writer anyway for all burning.

I'll probably get one.

I just watched the iOS7 video. It looks really nice. Really nice. The parallax/faux-3D layering of stuff is excellent, and I like that it's changing a bit. I didn't even bother with iOS6, so I hope this works on my measly 4.

Actually, it looks like a stubby pistol silencer to me. And it's surprisingly small — the side by side shot I saw of it next to the old Pro model made it look about half the height of the tower.

There are some nice things but I think it looks appalling. They've copied a bunch of bits they like from Windows and Android (which is fine, if ironic with all the suing) without really tying it all up consistently (which is not fine) and then scribbled across the whole thing with crayons (which is shocking).

There's a video about it floating around in which Jonny Ive appears to be running at about a third the normal speed of the universe. Very disconcerting.

Heh, I watched that last night and was struck by exactly the same thought. I'm convinced they've filmed him then slowed it down and pitch fixed his voice; the effect really is odd as fuck.

I still think the new UI looks really nice and there's some changes made in there that my mind was boggled they hadn't done years ago (e.g. shrunk/hid the relatively massive tool/address bars on Safari). There were a couple of Android-esque touches I noted while watching it (which conveniently I can't remember now!) but I'm mostly past caring about the potential hypocrisy at this point. Well, until the next lawsuit of idiocy at least.

I literally can't stand the colours. It's like they downgraded to a fucking EGA graphics chip. That green!

THERE ARE MORE THAN 16 PALETTE ENTRIES MAN.

Though maybe all the other colours were used to childishly gradient-shade everything.

Someone at work has it, the bastard. It's very nice indeed. The way you enter apps and return to the home screen is lovely, as is the way folders are managed. The music app is a lot nicer too.

Gutted I have to wait for 'fall'.

Having seen the video now, I think iOS7 looks quite nice actually.
However i'm way too used to the convenience of widgets and having information on my home screen now, no way I could go back to the list of apps model that is iOS.

Ok Apple people, advice time.

September I get a new Mac laptop from work, my three options are:

1) 11" Air
2) 13" Air
3) 15" Macbook Pro

What I really want is an Air with a retina screen, but as they don't do one of those, i'm stuck between the 15" pro and the 13" air. I think a couple of you have the Pro with retina screen don't you? Is it really worth the extra weight? I don't need the extra processing power.

The 15" MacBook Pro w/ Retina is the best laptop I've ever owned. The screen is so nice - I've looked at MBAs since and they make my eyes bleed.

I have a 15" Retina Pro. Frankly it's so thin and tiddly compared to Pee Cee laptops that it's fine. It makes my 2008 15" Pro look like a lard arse!

Just make sure you spec it up enough to begin with as you've got no chance of upgrading once you have it!
