Apparently, checking my logs, I haven't restarted this laptop in the past 267 days. That's pretty impressive going for a laptop, especially as I use it for about 8 hours every weekday, doing various random shit.
Out of all my machines, my work laptop being the most stable is a mild surprise.

What about you, what's your longest uptime machine you have at the moment?

When I had a home office, I kept one pc running all the time, I believe it got up to just over 1000 days of up time (running windows 2000) before I had to reboot it.

These days it's just a laptop at home, and a desktop at work I have to reboot once a week at least.

I imagine the laptop has an average up time of a few hours between suspends and a few weeks between actual reboots.

When I had my Dell laptop, I was rebooting at least once a day due to the crappy wifi card in it.

Less than 24 hours because a 650W power supply eats electricity.

I've got an NT4 DC that's clocking in at over five years. Purely because if it ever went down I don't think any force on earth could bring it back up again.

I put in a Google Mini search appliance at work and it ran faultlessly for about six or seven years before it decided to terminate its own existence one morning.

I have a Windows 2000 box on my desk right now that does very little actual work but tells me I've been logged on since 12/06/2012 (its also complaining about needing reboots for patches but I'm hoping to keep it going until at least the year is up)

Wow... I feel guilty if I leave my PC on overnight!

It doesn't actually draw 650W all the time, you know.

My imac and htpc haven't been switched off in years it must be a good ten years or so since I used to turn off my main machine, it's always doing something or other at all times.

Do you not restart for Windows updates?

On my macbook? Nope.
Imac gets restarted every so often, but it never gets turned off.
Htpc just sits with xbmc running, there are most likely updates that I should be applying, but I never bother to look.

I suspected it was a MacBook when I read your post. They really are wonderfully reliable devices, apart from Safari, which does have its ups and downs.

I think the last time I "rebooted" my MacBook was after I dropped it 2 feet onto a marble floor and the hard disk had to be replaced.

That's pretty good - I think it being a laptop helps, as powercuts and accidental un-plugs are what tends to take my iMac down. Haven't intentionally rebooted it this year but it's currently saying:

up 62 days, 20:55, 2 users, load averages: 0.67 0.58 0.53

I meant to ask... I always thought that it would shorten the life of your PC if you left it on all the time. Is this not the case?

I've taken to leaving mine in standby mode recently because of this thread.

I'm really not up to date with PC stuff but in the past it would lengthen it as the biggest shock to parts would be the initial startup (and I know of many older systems which worked fine until they were rebooted / power cycled and then never came back on)

My MacPro is always on, but as I tinker it probably never goes more than a couple of months without rebooting. Just last week I had it apart for a good dusting for example.

My wife makes me turn of everything, no stand by is allowed in our house

The only thing I get away with leaving on is my NAS, if she knew I could turn it off via a web page and then on again via WOL that would off each night as well

The NAS has been up a rather poor 48 days since the last firmware update, the last one was a couple of years.
