So, I've just rudely dismissed the nice man who came to look at our current dishwasher and proclaimed that it needed £350 of parts to fix, which fits in with what the Internet told me about error codes.

Clearly, that can fuck off, so it's SPENDY TIME!

Anyone know anything about dishwashers - what makes them good, etc?

I recall hearing good things about Miele. I suppose you're looking for volume and cycle time as main paramenters. Other than that, I dunno.

yes and Bosch.... doesn't your Which account tell you? My Slimline Bosch is amazing 0-60 in 1Hour 30mins and does around 1000MPG.

Seriously, my built in dishwasher has no visible lights on the outside, you only get a light to tell you it is finished when you open the door, which is a mildly flawed design...

Ditto. Mine does also beep when it has finished, but at a volume that can only be heard if your ear is pressed agaisnt the door, and all external noise (such as the sound of ants walking on leaves in Kyrgystan) is blocked out.

Aye, yet if it sounds like it is finished and you open the door, but it has decided it needs another 5 minutes to gather itself or something, it fires up the hidden 1000db beeper. Over and over again.

Surely that's pretty inherent with a built in one, ours is the same but it's never been a problem.

Doesn't make it any less stupid. All that is needed is a little light on the outside of the door.

Ah yes, I agree, it is a completely insurmountable problem, never fixable.

Mine had the control panel on the top of the door. You could just see the lights on it in the gap between it and the countertop.

Tech media (Well, Rory Cellan Jones) has been banging on about Internet connected appliances for years now, without actually considering a sensible application for them. It is surely not expensive or beyond the wit of man for my dishwasher to send a notification to my iPhone saying that it has finished its cycle, as if I am in the Poker Room then I can't hear it.

The closest I've seen is that new thermostat thing that was designed by the iPod designer that allowed you to easily monitor your heating and hot water set up remotely with an iPhone. Annoyingly my house is built with what appears to be the only thermostat system designed in the past 3 years that can't accomodate that.

Our Bosch one is good; controls on the top of the door, loud periodic beeping when done, and A-rated too. Hasn't missed a beat in 2 years. I'm convinced that, like cars, most of the more expensive ones are thousands of Bosch bin parts tied together with a body shell on top anyway. The 5-year-old (poorly-installed and maintained) Neff it replaced certainly was.

Ours just beeps when it's finished, or goes "whirr whirr whirr" when it's not.

Expect when it's broken.

Ours has a stage in between, where if you've been off doing stuff you wonder if you missed the beeps so you open it and get a face full of steam because it's in the final drying/water-reclamation stage.

I don't think it would survive the wash, plus it'll be pretty dark in there, i'd have to put in a waterproof light too.

Kind of related, I have a new washing machine that has a count down clock on it to tell you how long it's got to go. Simple, but clever.

So has mine!

If only it didn't take 5 minutes to register each button press before it lets me press the next button in the sequence.

Why does it reclaim water and what does it do with the water it's reclaimed exactly?

I just figured 'reclaiming water' meant it took in 4 litres of water, then added detergent to it, sprayed it about it bit, then took in 3x 4 litres of water and squirted it about a bit then done.

*volumes might vary, but 3x the original volume is generally good for getting rid of most traces of whatever sued to be in there.

When you put the tablet in and close the door the dishwasher starts. it takes in 4 litres of water from the mains and heats it up. Then, it pumps this water around, mixing it with the detergent. It sues the same 4 litres, and the reclamiing water is it allowing the water to drain before getting pumped through the spinnyroundy things again. The, it drains, and 4 litres of fresh water is pumped in, recirculated to rinse and this is repeated twice more.

Also related, I've just sent a snagging list to the builders customer service department. As has always been the case, I get no customer service from them other than telling me they can't do X, Y or Z under warranty, then the site management come over to look at the stuff that they can apparently do, and fix everything including the stuff that customer care refused to, and also stick up some shelves or something else that quite clearly isn't in their remit as they are nice guys.

Annoyingly one of the responses is to me saying that the dishwasher is backfilling from the washing machine drain and they've refused to look at it as the manufacturer has to do the dishwasher warranty. Bullshit - it's backfilling not because the dishwasher is broken, but because it has been installed wrong. Dicks.

If it helps, my current dishwasher is pretty inefficient and makes a fairly constant high-pitched whining noise.

I suggest earplugs and set her to work earlier.

My washing machine is Beko and I ordered it from Appliances Online. They're very good but be prepared to be bombarded by texts, emails and phone calls to say that the appliance is being delivered.

They'll also try to sell you an extended warranty... Just be aware.

Yeah, I got my washing machine from them, too.

They're the cheapest I found by a long way... so for that...

They do beep for ages when finished though, somebody at work said you can turn this off or change it but I never looked into it.

I would reckon any A rated dish washer will be fine, John Lewis and Cost Co do 5 year warrantees on most white goods.

Right, so my dishwasher has been chucking up error lights and so I did go and try to fix it. I've tracked it down to there being an error in the fill matrix, so, like Agent Smith I tracked it down. It looks just like this:



Is the orange stuff a filter, or is it 10 years worth of gloopygoo? I can't open the thing to investigate, and if I run clear water in, clear water comes out. The dishwasher is a Teka DW6 FI which, apparently, is a SMEG.
